I do not get it, I only see one tusk in these photos. Because the bottom photo is flipped.

^ I have been thinking about this design of the hand puppet a bit yesterday and this morning and I think what you can take away from it is that the Tusks or horns are not a prominent feature. But that also makes very little sense because if an animal grows either tusks or horns they are generally very noticeable as seen in elephants, rhino, rams, goats, deer and pigs.

Not only this but a horn or a tusk also has very obvious uses for either scooping and stabbing or butting and ramming.

So I think it looks like they tried to hide that feature under the fur somewhat on the Hand puppet but i just thought if you were going to give the Wampa Horns or Rams that made sense they would have to be quite a prominent feature to make sense.

So I just thought what shape makes sense and based off the old Mcquarrie painting I think his Horns shape and placement made the most sense.

Excuse the rough job here it is just for the purpose of illustrating the Mcquarrie Horn Placement.

The other thing I noticed is that another feature that makes the Hand puppet so appealing is that the shoulders start half way up it’s head. and it has like a bit of a hunch or hunched back.

Rondan, it looks like both horns are visible in that top behind-the-scnens pic to me - with the tip of the ‘broken-ended’ one just visible on the left of that pic.

As far as I’m aware, the bottom pic (which is ‘flipped’ compared to the way it looks in the top pic) was taken when the wampa puppet was on public display somewhere, sometime after the movie was completed. And somewhere along the line, the hair on the puppet ended up re-arranged somewhat, and ended up covering one of the horns completely in this pic.

@ Ronster - Gotta say that I was never partial to the look of McQuarrie’s wampa design, nor the curvature of it’s horns in that particular concept. I much prefer the horns to be angled more in the style of this myself -

the tips of the horns should be facing forward absolutely. there is no point having a pointy end unless you can use it to stab or gouge. Not pointing towards his own mouth like in the McQuarrie painting. But off away from the mouth so as not to get in the way while eating.

But I still have several queries that your latest clip throws up -

  1. Before you film it, will you be trying to brush the hair on your version’s head in a manner similar to the tousled, mussed-up look of the original one? - I know it can’t be exact, but the original puppet looked excellent in that regard.

  2. And are you still intending to heavily coat the hair with ‘icicles’ like the original has? - that’s one of the best details about that original puppet, I reckon.

  3. And are you going to ‘dirty down’/add a little ‘dried blood’ under it’s bottom lip to your version, as seen in the top 2 shots above? - again, I think that’s a nice additional detail there.

All the detailing, like the “dirtying up”, the added ice and the styling of the fur will be done shortly before filming commences. The reason for this is that this head will end up being handled quite a lot while i finish the costume and this type of work could easily get spoilt in the process.

Could you give us a breakdown on the scene’s that are going to be shot with the wampa?

I believe it’s just the 3 shots of the Wampa from the theatrical cut.

I do agree that some of the added shots in the SE are too much “in your face”.

I do believe that the one SE shot that should be left in is the one after it’s arm gets cut off.

That’s the point where it goes beyond “LOOK, THE WAMPA!” to some kind of parody.

“YOU DIDN’T REALIZE THAT IF YOU CUT AN ARM OFF A WAMPA IT WOULD ONLY HAVE ONE ARM!”

Not necessarily. If you wanted to see the Wampa after Luke cuts it’s arm off, it would be just as effective for Ady to grab a quick shot of the new Wampa tossing it’s head back to yell in pain. The full-on shot from the SE always bothered me and is not going to match the look that Ady achieved to match the original.

The logistical problem would be that the attack takes place inside the ice cave so a low camera angle would have to showcase a white ice ceiling above and behind the Wampa.

But a quick shot of the guttural cry of the beast opening his maw to yelp in pain would be enough.

or, it could remain as the original was with Luke turning to run out of the cave after the arm hits the ground and only Luke’s reaction to the monster he just de-limbed.

I guess we will find out in just a few weeks’ time.

I find your lack of faith…disturbing

I can,but whats the harm in having some sort of count down.

Because the guy doesn’t need the added pressure of a countdown, perhaps?
