1.Empire Strikes back

2.Star wars

3.Return of the jedi

4. ROTS

5.Howard the Duck

6.and then the other episodes...

I actually did get the workprint to watch, Lucas gets no more of my money. I enjoyed some of it but it felt a bit rushed at the end, maybe two films could have been made

5.5 out of 10

Fails on 2 important points; the pivotal moment where anakin agrees to become sidious' apprentice is not convincing enough. And at the end where I should have been pitying him for being the fall guy in sidious' bigger plans I didn't really care about him at all.

Lucas has had 30 years to come up with this, and this is the best he could do?

My rankings (although I love each of the movies in different ways):

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge of the Sith

NOTE: Earlier I had these two in a tie... I think, however, I'd always have to give the edge to ESB, simply because of the presence of Han Solo.

3. A New Hope
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Phantom Menace
6. Attack of the Clones

Also, I'd like to note that in my ranking of all time great films, the entire Star Wars saga ranks as #1 (I lump them together to keep it as simple as possible), followed by the Indiana Jones series, Godfather 1 & 2, Rocky (1 only), etc.
Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

I really did dig the new movie, but it still doesn't resonate quite the same way the OT does. That may very well be because the OT is my childhood and I've viewed and digested it hundreds of times, but the new movie is only 72 hours old. I can honestly say III is the best of the prequels, and it will only improve in extended form.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

Maybe in 20 years we can give a definite ranking of Ep III.

I've seen Revenge of the Sith 7 times now, and it still holds up. I think what alot of us are forgetting is that the OT had it's fair share of bad acting and cheesy dialogue. Revenge of the Sith suffers from it about as much as A New Hope does, and some of Luke's dialogue in Empire. It doesn't suffer the way the first two prequels do.

What I said before still holds true.

The Definitive Trilogy:
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back

not rank wise, just order wise, ya know?

Now, you can take about 70 % of Jedi and about 50% of Attack of the Clones and you've got two good movies. Remove alot of the non-believable love stuff from AOTC and the Ewoks from Jedi and you've got some worthy films.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

...maybe even a decent Saga.

(We could probably put it all together as such once Blu-ray comes out. )

Well, over time, tastes and opinions do change. Originally, ROTJ was my favorite with ANH as my second favorite. I didn't like ESB because of all the darkness and I felt bad for everyone... But now, for those exact reasons, I love ESB and it's my favorite.

So who knows, maybe in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years, ROTS or AOTC will be at the top of most people's list. Or even, god forbid, TPM.

I just returned from a "journey" I made to watch ROTS with some of my friends in another town.
I have to admit, I didn't expect to like this movie so much, but I did. I could go on explaining why I loved it, but I quess everything is pretty much said, so here's my rating:

Ep.V ESB:10
Ep.IV ANH: 9
EP.III ROTS: 9
EP.II AOTC: 8
Ep.VI ROTJ: 6
Ep.I TPM: 5
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

I'd give Jedi 7/10

In order:
V
IV
VI (tie)
III (tie)
II
I

Reason for a tie for third...
RoTJ - Weak points: Backdrop paintings, heavy use of matte paintings (VERY obvious budget cuts), Ewoks.
Strong points: the entire Luke/Vader dynamic (especially the 20 seconds following "perhaps she will...")
Summary - Marquand did the best with what he had to work with.

RoTS - Weak points: rushed ending, weak turn to the Dark Side. Still some use of bad dialog to cover weak plot points (lost the will to live)
Strong points: Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan, Palpatine (yeah! excepted). Visually stunning and more use of lightsabers.
Summary - if GL had let somebody else direct, could have ranked with "Empire".

While I'm a fan of the OT primarily (I've seen every film in the theater since '77), I'm not blinded by hatred for the PT, nor do I think GL "raped my childhood" with his "tweaking" of the OT. I think there are good possibilities with "good" CGI making the OT a different experience (think a better looking hangar bay sequence in front of the Falcon for one), but I also agree that the ORIGINAL versions, warts and all should be available as well.
For those who complain about the "cheesy" dialog in the OT, I'll grant some of that, but remember the time frame...ANH came out in 1977 (a dark time to be sure, disco was all the rage..yuck!). ESB stands out, not only for the dark tone of the film in general, but also it was a collaboration... GL primarily wrote it, and had a CO-writer for the screenplay (Leigh Brackett) and had somebody else direct (Irvin Kershner). Had he done this with "Sith", the result IMO would have been a tie for best film of the series. In any event, you'll never convince the fanboys of either series to change their very narrow views. Life's too short to sweat this kind of stuff.

The one "creative decision" that always sticks out and bothers me is the "Millenium Falcon" backdrop behind Han and Lando.

As much as I pain to say it, on the 2004 DVDs I thought they made it look pretty real.

Hear, hear! Very well said...I agree on all counts (including the exact ranking). I also like ROTJ for the Luke/Vader/Emperor dynamic--it's what truly makes it a "Star Wars" film.

Ok, I thought EpIII was good. Not great, not as good a any of the OOT movies, but good. It is the best of the PT(imho)

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return Of The Jedi
  4. Revenge Of The Sith
  5. The fake Menace
  6. Attack Of The Clowns

I shall discuss the thinks I liked and disliked later.

Are you referring to the creature, itself, or the matting?

After seeing ROTS the first time, alot bothered me about it and I ranked it a notch below the OT, after seeing it a second time, I found it much more entertaining, and things I intitally found irritating the first time suprisingly didn't bother me at all or as much this time.

One thing that still bothered me was the makeup job on Palpatine, terrible...

I found the makeup to be really bad up until he put the hood on. He looked like a cross between Nicholson's Joker and Oldman's Dracula (in elder form). Add that to his Gollum like delivery on a few lines before the hood and that was one of only two scenes that had me really cringing during the movie. There were little kinks elsewhere, but nothing to that degree.
