I think the question as to whether or not you’re a hipster has just been answered. 😉

Also, I did once listen to an NPR segment about vinyl, and how encoding on vinyl is inherently superior because digital reproduction of an analog wavelength by its very nature removes information.

That argument is BS, by the way.

Which argument? That analog-to-analog is better; or that FLAC would make for a reasonable lossless copy?

The former.

I didn’t claim to be an expert. I just said I heard a segment on the subject, and they claimed that was why vinyl is actually better than CD. That article you linked is a bit tl;dr for me in refuting it, but basically, they cited the whole stairstep thing I’m seeing in the margins.

you probably misunderstood the segment because it was a digital broadcast.

Hey, I still have music encoded as MP3 @ ~192k VBR from back in the day when file size mattered. And I’ve RECENTLY ripped my entire Audible library to MP3 VBR -q8 (because I have a lot of them and Plex doesn’t support m4b yet. Plus I hate Apple so nevermind iTunes support.) I’m no audiophile.

For the record, I rip to digital for everything when at all possible. Even moreso than I used to since I started a Plex Media Server. Media servers are definitely not hipster.

There’s no problem with either of those settings. Only superhumans can tell the difference between high bitrate MP3s and lossless files. 😉

Most audiophile stuff is overpriced voodoo.

Before I sound hipstery for saying that–I hate Apple because their interface is limiting. I like freedom and customizability, which is the antithesis of anything Apple.

I never said I supported it. I only even call it vinyl so people know what I’m talking about.

I might be. I listen to all my music at home on vinyl. But it’s because I legitimately like it and have since I was a little kid before I even knew it was cool. And on my system with hide cabinet speakers they legitimately sound superior and I’ve verified this through a/b testing of the same songs. Whether it’s because vinyl is actually better or if vinyl releases are just mastered better is irrelevant because the vinyls I have sounds better than the cds I have.

However, vinyl becomes worn and scratched over time. One wonders why you don’t then transfer them to FLAC for a digital copy and keep your vinyls pristine.

FLAC isn’t hipster. Picky, yes, but not hipster.

Also, I did once listen to an NPR segment about vinyl, and how encoding on vinyl is inherently superior because digital reproduction of an analog audio wavelength by its very nature removes information (while vinyl is already analog). However, I would think FLAC better at reproducing it than redbook audio. Plus, without a digital transfer, how else could you get comparable sound from a mobile device or from your car as you do from your entertainment center?

I don’t do this for a few reasons. One because of what you said about analog to digital. Two because I don’t have anything equipped to playback FLAC connected to my music center. (I have a home theater system for movies that I could but I have separate receivers for movies and music. For the movies I use 5 satellite speakers and a sub for surround, whereas for solely music I have a receiver with two huge cabinet speakers hooked into it) and three because it just diminishes the experience I think.

No worries… I’m just buggin’.

And for the record, I tend to use “vinyl” for singular (as in, “I have the new Depeche Mode on vinyl”) and “records” for plural (as in, “I bought a shit ton of Brian Eno records today”).

And the more we discuss this, the more I suspect we are both hipsters (again… I’m kidding).

I hate vinyl because it weighs a shitload and takes up a ton of physical space.

I remember the folks having some vinyl records lying around back when I was in kindergarten, but no player to play them on. Aside from that, I have had had no exposure to the format.

I guess that solidifies my status as a non-hipster, shitty glasses and hatred for the modern mainstream music industry and Hollywood notwithstanding.

I quite enjoy vinyl, but not because I think it’s superior. It’s just nostalgic and I enjoy the experience… but I also enjoy the MP3 format for making playlists I can listen to while walking around!

I do enjoy physical media in general though, with an emphasis on the retro stuff. Records, CDs, DVDs, Laserdiscs, Blurays… all of it’s cool. I also have some of older video game consoles and computers too. I guess I’m somewhat of a collector… but I try not to be a hoarder.

I really respect those who are minimalists though, and I do believe that going digital is probably better for the environment. I just really enjoy the history of our culture’s entertainment. Plus, I don’t think it’s terrible for a few of us to save some this for posterity. And with my emphasis on retro, I’m keeping at least some of this from going into a landfill… for a little while at anyway!
