Any interest in professionally made box sets for Despecialized?

I am not quite sure where to begin this conversation, but I figured this was as good a place as any. I have been following the Lucasfilm updates on the OT release, or lack thereof really, and unfortunately it does not appear that we will be seeing anything significant any time soon. So, in light of this, is there any interest among the community for a professionally produced box set for Harmys’ versions?

I have been talking with a guy who produces custom made Digi-packs and he would be able to and is interested in making something for the Star Wars community but would need to know if there is any interest. They would be customize-able to a certain point and could consist of steel books or Digi packs, art cards, mini posters or whatever the community would like. But of course, the more extra materials means a higher price.

I know that one of the driving forces behind these boards is creativity combined with a love of Star Wars in its original, unmolested form, hence the number of DIY box sets, but I also see a desire to have something commercially produced.

The guy making these products is totally independent and I profit in no way from any of this, I am simply trying to gauge interest on our behalf. Of course logistics like shipping and so fourth would have to be worked out, but what do you think, anybody interested?

Quick jedit:

***no discs of any kind will be included if a group buy happens. You will only receive empty materials to which you will add your own discs. I repeat, no discs are going to be made available, only printed materials!

This concludes our public service announcement.

I’m working on something. I would even collaborate with others to make a professional box set. I am looking into making custom TOPPS Cards for mynset. They would be pretty much cards of the sources and fan edits used for Harmys and the Creators of the edits. I’m doing posters and more. But this will take time and a lot of effort that I’m putting in.

I do see that having something produced on large-scale would be fun and exciting for us, but could draw some unwanted attention if these are to professional, by Disney.

Thanks for the input. I think that some level of collaboration is certainly welcome and would lend itself to greater input from the community in terms of the final product. Personally, I really like the DIY stuff, mine included, but I think it is fair to say that I would also like to have something commercially produced.

As far the the mouse house, there would be no advertising and no other customers and boxes/sets would be disc free of course…maybe a group buy strictly for the OT community, something of that nature.

I would LOVE a box to purchase. I have had some success creating my own disc sets but an actual box has been an issue and I would happily put out some money for one being professionally made.

A group for OT members Strictly would be great!

Could set up a list of Sorts for Different Packages. Maybe a Limited Run on Steel books, or Special Boxsets. Maybe some incentives for those who Collab on making this happen and contributing artwork/designs for this to happen.

Is it possible to see an example of your friends work so we have a better understanding of what is possible?

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

We don’t know if they are friends. They might not even like each other.

I have actually never met the man…I saw his work on Bluray.com and contacted him about buying his Bond set and I asked him if he could do some custom work for me, and he agreed. He printed out the full slip cases, re-sized to fit Criterion cases, a booklet and a set of the Manga style posters for my box set.

Full Slip for Skyfall; Spectre set with character cards ^^

Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace sets ^^

Interior of Casino and Quantum ^^

Despecialized slips ^^

Also, he has offered to join the boards to continue the conversation and answer questions but I am not sure if there is a vendor type of account. Can a mod shed some light on this? Thanks in advance…

I am very tempted by the idea of professional looking Media. But it also feels wrong to allow consumerism the be tacked on to something that starts out so free.

It’s sort of like Harmy applied a copy-left license to despecialized, and it applies to all derivative products as well. So having anyone contribute in a commercial way violates that.

That’s just my thoughts. Of course Harmy didn’t apply a copy-left license to despecialized. And I don’t think this actually violates anything in the letter of the law. But for me, I think it does violate the spirit of the law.

Thanks for the insight. I had not looked at it that way. If the majority of the community feels likewise, I will tell my contact that the project is a no-go and ask that the thread be locked. So if others feel that this violates the spirit of the project, please let me know here or via PM and I will take appropriate action. Thanks!

And as far as those people who may still want to purchase something like this from this individual directly, you may be all means contact him and conduct your own private transaction.

So community, what say you?

I think it’s a great idea you are doing here mate - and hope it comes off and does well - and yes, I’d be interested too 😃

Yet I also see where Dhamage is coming from and agree with it too… plus half the fun is knocking up your own stuff at times - no matter had bad it may be at first (I’m referring to my stuff here 😉) and then trying to improve upon it.

It may be an idea to get ‘the ok’ from Harmy? - or njvc too IF the boxes/and covers etc will feature some of his work as well?

Good luck with it mate - again, it’s just my two penneth, but think this is a great idea, nice one!

edit - ps, like darthrush says above - I don’t we should be paying for the films themselves, just paying for the boxes, covers and slipcovers and postcards etc

pps - those are truly beautiful looking sets you posted mate 😃

Thanks! And you are right, there will no discs included with any set; the guy doesn’t have any discs himself, he just sells the sets and then the buyer adds their own discs.

And coming from a 007 fan such as yourself, I appreciate the feedback.

I’m interested. Looking at the Bond ones, I think this could turn out really nicely. Count me in!

I’ve been making custom discs lately so a custom made box would be nice. Count me in as interested. Will he accept individual requests or will he just be creating sets based on the same design(s)???

Probably going to be a universal set, I am sure you can contact the guy for personalizing a set of your own.

That is a great question. In the past with my prsonal orders, he has been pretty flexible, like printing custom things for my box set and changing out the single disc amray holder for a 3 disc, so I am sure that there will be some customization in the project. I am thinking about asking him to offer 3 designs that we can then perhaps mix or match to suit our needs. To be fair to him, we probably need to settle on a few options instead of a few dozen buyers all wanting something different. Once I get back in the office on Tuesday I will contact him about joining the forums so that he can answer some of these questions directly. Also, he is in Spain, so Spanish or English won’t be an issue, but if there is another language desired, he may be able to print out whatever you want as long as you provide the translated text desired. He can also then address issues like pricing and shipping costs.

Thanks!

This is brilliant! Crap, now the problem is how does one choose between Digipaks or Steelbooks?

I’m sure both will be amazing.

There is a third option, that being slip covers printed to cover the cases which have already been purchased, which is what I chose to do. Jose printed the slips slightly larger to accommodate my Criterion cases, they are pictured above.

In terms of pricing, steel books will be the most expensive and labor intensive…buying the empty, disassembly and the painting, etc. The process is very similar to what others on the boards have done.

The next option in terms of price will be Digi Packs and then, slips.

Jose can give specifics or perhaps clarify options next week.

I am really interested in this as well! Professionally made digipacks, steelbooks or maybe even a Trilogy Box Set would be awesome!
