Myself, I saw SW 27 times in its inital release, so I relate with ya. (saw SW at the tender age of 13 the first time). What's more, I snuck in a dictation recorder (one of the early micro-tape jobs) and recorded the audio. Of course I wore out my "Story of Star Wars" too. Those days, we had a wait of about 3 years from movie theater to TV (remember the ABC Sunday Night Movies?). Star Wars was going to take 10 years (it ultimately made it to home video first in the mid-80's), so we did what we could. As far as RoTJ, I was initially furious when it came out at the obvious budget cuts (backdrop painting of the Falcon, anyone?), but the story made up for it. Now that I've dated myself, I'll add to the ROTS discussion....

I agree that once the hype dies down (along with the "BEST MOVIE EVER" crowd, who will have moved on to the next best movie ever), the overall take on it will be that it's the best of the PT, but still falls short of the OT. Lucas was trying to bridge both trilogies and the fans of both, but I think he just missed the mark. Why is ESB considered to be the best film overall, superior even to ANH? My opinion is it's the direction. GL should have found a suitable director for ROTS, but its all water under the bridge at this point. I submitted a review on IMDB reflecting this point of view, and I'll close with the the same close there: I'll wait for Magnoliafan's version.

Empire is considered better than Star Wars, partly because of directing, but more because of the tone and pacing of the film. It's more somber, with ending on a downer note. Instead of some giant celebration which was totally impractical. The Rebels destroyed the Death Star, yay! Apparently they forgot about all the Star Destroyers that now know EXACTLY where they are. They should probably chill on Yavin for awhile, get all gussied up and line all the troops up in one spot so it would just take one laser cannon blast to crush the Rebellion.

While at the same time alot of the 'best movie ever stuff' will die down, so will alot the the OT diehards that feel they must defend the sanctity of the OT against a possibly good PT film.

All those OT diehards aren't as stuffy as you seem to make them out to be. Of course, without the old we couldn't have the new but the technology makes the PT more appealing to the newer fans because those are the kind of movies they grew up with. Us "diehards" were more satisfied with the human story telling and look of the OT because you could relate to it no matter who you were.....look and Star Trek Enterprise......a story that predates the "Kirk" era but looks like it is taking place in the here and now.....not a way to keep the passion of what made the original Star Trek what it is and keep that intact. The PT should have been made to look "dated" as well to keep the integrity of the entire saga....it just makes good sense.........you would be hard pressed to deny that at least....

Sorry if this got off the topic....

I really believe that EP III has alot to offer fans old and new. It shows the flaws of characters and their beliefs. A little more film to maybe show Darth Vader in action with the troops and that "great red lightsaber" would have been welcomed along with a holographic message or two from Tarkin to Palpatine to really give ANH a kickstart the right way would have been also greatly appreciated.

I don't care if he liked or disliked the movie, I was just looking forward to actually reading his reasons for disliking the movie, and not why he doesn't like GL. I've heard the same rant about 100 times. I was thinking maybe he would bring up some new points about Episode 3 and talk about something we hadn't talked about, but instead it's not even about Episode 3.

He didn't. He just said that he enjoys it the least. Even then, that wouldn't even suggest that he's saying it's the worst. Welcome to the forums. Might I suggst breaking your first post up into clearer paragraphs for easier readability?

you mis read me, INTERMS OF MY PERSONAL ENJOYMENT it was last, i found it slow at times. IT WAS the 3RD BEST ONE IF YOUR LOOKING AT QUALILTY.

Just two things to contribute:

1) I agree that the magic of the first three films has been irrevocably lost. Although I am one of those who loved ep 3 when I saw it, there is NO going back to what Star Wars was in my brain before these new movies were made. I would go back if I could.

2) They tried to give people "high language" in this one, which deals, among other things, with a lack of contractions. Ewan took awhile, but in this film he nailed it and the dialogue sounded natural even though it was "high." Portman never mastered the skill, so she just sounds unnatural with the language. I believe that is the failing of many of the actors. Picture Samuel L. Jackson doing Shakespeare. Is he comfortable onstage? Can he express himself through the dialogue? Star Wars is not Shakespeare, but re-structure the sentences and remove contractions and, as far as the actor is concerned, it might as well be.
