Super Mario / Captain N / Zelda TV series preservations (a WIP) — Page 3

OK! So I found my tape with Texas Tea and Treasure of the Sierra Brooklyn. Unfortunately, they are recorded in SLP and Sierra cuts out shortly after the Zelda cartoon ends, due to the tape running out during recording. I currently don't have a way to capture the VHS, but here is a 20 second clip of Sierra from my cell phone, just to prove it's real:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kyf1jsFMYmw

Keep an eye on my other YouTube channel, SMBSS Restored: Legend of Zelda Fridays (Not affiliated with SMBSS Restored) for the 13 Zelda episodes restored as close as possible to how they originally aired.

So I found this on ebay Australia:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-SUPER-MARIO-BROS-SUPER-SHOW-Complete-Series-First-Season-1-New-Sealed-R4-/141036749484?

It seems to contain ALL of the Mario cartoons and live-action segments, just missing the Zelda cartoons. I think it came out last year. I can't find any reviews or specs of the set anywhere besides this guy's eBay listing. Does anyone have this set? $60 shipped is a lot to pay for just 10 minutes of footage I don't have (part of Sierra Brooklyn and The Magic Love), but if I can know for 100% certainty that all of those lost segments (especially those last two I mentioned) are on this six disc set, I will bite the bullet.

Is it weird that I want to do a preservation of Super Mario/Zelda in SWEDISH?

If audio was found from one of the missing segments without the video, would it be animated? They did that for Doctor Who.

Did anyone ever release Captain N with the original audio?

Hi, saw this thread was updated and I'm also interested in the original music from the SMBSS and I don't think anyone has put together a fan edit.

Were all SMBSS episodes released?

And does anyone know if the music was only changed for the SMB and Zelda cartoons?

Thanks.

A custom DVD set of Captain N with the original audio was made a number of years ago before the official DVD set was released. I have some very poor quality avi/mpg rips of this set but would prefer the higher quality DVDs. If anyone still has them please let me know. Thanks

Greetings everyone…

So, a few days turned into a few years LOL! If there’s still interest in this project I can find a way to transfer the captain N episodes online…most of the videos are in flv format, but the audio quality is really good, and as I said, the original audio is intact, as is the ‘original’ version of ‘How’s Bayou’, and the more well-known 2nd version. As well as 3 versions of the clip-show episode.

As far as I know, Season 2 was left intact

Yes. I would love that. If you could upload all the uncut episodes you have, I can combine them with the DVD footage to restore them. And yeah, I don’t think the 2nd, SMB3 season had missing music, but they may have used some syndicated masters instead of NBC.

I’m still following this thread 😃

Check out my YouTube page, “SMBSS Restored- Legend of Zelda Fridays” and my friend Dylan’s page, “SMBSS Restored”. I tackle the Legend of Zelda episodes and he does the Super Mario Bros. episodes. He has uploaded all DVD episodes, restored with the original music and live-action portions of episodes that were altered or omitted for the DVD releases. I am working on restoring the live-action Legend of Zelda-related episodes.

Eventually a DVD set will be made of all the restored episodes. Soon work will begin on Captain N season 1 and Captain N and the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3!

does your restoration also fix the damaged video etc in the dvds and clean up as best as possible the non dvd parts video as well?

The only episode I know that is messed up video wise is Day of the Orphan/ King Mario of Cramalot. It used the Family Channel master, instead of the DIC original, and it’s missing the bumpers and Zelda preview. All of which has been fixed. Other than some episodes having bad color, like Zenned Out Mario, what else is wrong with the video? I’m not aware of anything. The Viacom closing logos will also be restored.

I didn’t even know about the RGB problems until now. I don’t have that set yet, and I just read about some episodes being slowed down or sped up.

There’s a new Real Ghostbusters set out or coming out this year that hopefully fixes the issues.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but someone on Youtube has been uploading English episodes of the Super Mario Bros Super Show that appear to be DVD rips, but have the song covers intact and have a Saban logo instead of a DiC logo. Does anyone know where these prints are coming from? They seem to be from European DVDs since Saban had the international distribution rights

No problem at all. I’m still working on this, just very sloooooowly. I haven’t seen those personally, but yeah, it’s probably UK DVDs. A few of those have the songs intact, but I don’t think any non-US release had commercial bumpers. The guy who runs SMBSS Restored is a friend of mine and he has uploaded all of the non-Zelda episodes using NTSC DVD footage combined with other sources for the missing segments to create “perfect” versions. I’m doing the same, on my channel, SMBSS Restored- Legend of Zelda Fridays, although mine is incomplete. I’m in the process of moving, so it’ll be a while before I can do more for this project.

What im working on is a personal DVD set that’s meant to replicate the way that I remember watching the Mario cartoons on The Family Channel back in 1992-93. Which means that the smbss episodes will have the Zelda previews and commercial bumpers cut out and be randomly mixed in with smb3 and smw episodes - I know it’s weird to want to remove the bumpers and zelda previews but video editing is a fun hobby for me. But I still want the smbss to play at their original speeds and not have the extra commercial fades that The Family Channel versions had. I have almost everything I need to do this, but my copies of “King Mario of Cramalot”, “Koopenstein”, " On Her Majestie’s Sewer Service", “The Unzappables” and " The Trojan Koopa" were found online and need some restoration in Virtualdub in order to make them match the quality of the episodes that I ripped straight ftom my DVDs - For the most part these online copies I found look fine, but they all have noticeable frame blending in the panning shots during the animated segments, and most of them have noticeable compression artifacts. What’s the best way to fix all these issues in Virtualdub?

Here are the online versions of these episodes that I found:

https://youtu.be/MQSySqNGuEA

https://youtu.be/nFvm_ZyX22A

https://youtu.be/NzflYe4IkM4

https://youtu.be/9al6g8gFNf0

https://youtu.be/lfOo5dEXscU

Some of them could also use some color correction, I’m noticing that whole “glowing red outline” thing and maybe “George Washington Slept Here” could be brightened up a litt as long as it doesn’t crush the white levels

That’s a cool idea too. For the best versions of all the episodes online so far, check out SMBSS Restored and SMBSS Restored- Legend of Zelda Fridays on YouTube. The second one is run by me. We take DVD footage (where available) and add in the missing songs and footage.

I can send you DVD quality versions of the above episodes when I get a chance. Higher quality versions of George Washington, Sierra Brooklyn, Magic Love and the Tutti Fruttis have just been found on German DVD releases. Some only have German language, but the best possible versions of everything will be created before the end of the year.

Are the rest of the episodes coming?

Author

They are, slowly. Sorry. It’s been a bit hectic, as my wife and I just moved and we are still getting settled in and everything. But I recently got a DVD from Germany that had all of the missing episodes, but only in German. If you know anyone who can understand German, I’m looking to get them translated and redubbed into English.
