It’s odd because, in the beginning, they seemed to have the best of intentions to just cleaning it up, according to the article. And then…it just became Frankenstein.

Believe it or not, there’s not a single thing in there about the originals…or dedicated to the original release. 😦

Right. Some of the stuff they did was needed. Mattes, lightsaber colors, more realistic shots of the X-wings during the battle of Yavin. Those things are not just cool but were actually needed to make the film better (not that it wasn’t extraordinarily good already).
But then you got all of the nonsense of a guy playing in his playground without regard for the film and the story as a whole. Characters were changed. Exposition was unnecessarily repeated. Tonal inconsistencies. And all kinds of distracting bullshit clutters the screen.
All these years they never acknowledge that the special edition of JEDI was kind of a dud, at least compared to Star Wars. It doesn’t fit with the whole “special edition-phenomenon-was like 1977 all over again!” narrative that has been the party line.

Well, at least they’re celebrating something star wars related.
For a lot of people, the special edition is what brought Star Wars back,
before then, it had pretty much disappeared, and was nowhere near the
popularity it had.
Despite the after effects of what it did, it brought the franchise back,
and allowed for a lot more to be done to the series, all at the expense
of the originals.
Whether that was intended or not, has only now become the implication.
Never mind Kenner successfully brought the action figure line back two years prior, and the OOT was still selling in it’s umpteenth home video incarnation. I don’t think the films were ever truly out of print on home video.

I do think it’s very interesting they acknowledge the SE’s were not only sources of debate, but also brought into question “the definition of authorship and the privileges of ownership”. That’s a big statement to be coming from them, isn’t it? Admitting that there are some ethical questions behind the changes?
