Actually, it was marketed as "The original Star Wars Trilogy on video ...One last time." So that point is not only ridiculous but irrelevent. Besides, if they do release it again it will be on DVD, not video.

Anyway, I think there's still hope for the original films. In an article just after the DVD release, George Lucas said something that I've never seen anyone bring up, but it's very encouraging. The following is a quote from this article

DB: You've said the last time you would issue the original versions was on VHS several years ago. But with VHS potentially becoming obsolete one day, will you release them on DVD?

GL: I don't know. I mean, when VHS becomes obsolete it will probably get released on DVD, I imagine. But I'm not going to spend the effort to restore them (to) what I consider to be the real film.
