Its a great movie, but extremely problematic at the same time. But thats LOTR in a nutshell, and not just the movies, but the books themselves. As the TTT DVD even admits, JR Tolkien didn't really seem to have any sense of pacing or foreshadowing or character arc. LOTR is probably one of the most flawed pieces of literature ever written, yet still it seems great nonetheless and overcomes all that to be very memorable, and I'm not exactly sure why.

Does it deserve to win the oscar (cause its going to) I honestly can't say. I've reached a point where I don't think I can truly pick one movie over another as the definitive best film of any given year. ROTK is certainly up there, but how do you begin to compare contrast ROTK with LIT? Two excellent movies, both completely different in scale and content.

Obviously what PJ mounted in his decade of work towards LOTR is unmatched by any filmmaker, but should we judge a movie by how hard it was to make? I don't know. It seems a shame not to reward such a valiant effort. But to say ROTK is a better film that LIT, or finding Nemo, or Master and Commander, I'm not sure I can do that.

I would rather the academy just recognized certain films base on their own merits, rather then having to have it all come down to one movie over another. That way if there are three masterpieces in one year, they can all be recognized.
