So it had the shorter podracing sequence? I'm right to be skeptical, since the VHS and jap-LD were the last we ever saw of the theatrical version...

This would be an invaluable thing, if you could get it off the dvr. It may be difficult to get the raw .ts stream, but you should be able to capture using an HDCP stripping HDMI splitter and a 30 or 40 euro hdmi capture card.

I can lend you my splitter ;)

I'm sure there are at least a few of us willing to donate to the cause.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Audio shouldn't be an issue.  I have both the LD stereo and 5.1 ac3 tracks already synced and posted in my LaserDisc audio archive, and I've already completed a synced version of the Theatrical DTS audio in DTS-HD MA.

The missing shots in HD would be huge.

Sorry I don't mean to be rude. These are the scenes that are exclusive to the Theatrical version:

And these are scenes that were altered (2000 Jap LD version on top, 2002 DVD version on bot).

If you do have a HD recording of it I would certainly be interested in it.\

The Theatrical version runs 132 mins, the 2002 version runs 136 mins (about 3 1/2 min longer in total).

Yep, it's the theatrical version, no doubt about it. I took some pictures off the screen, mind you the quality is not representative of the broadcast's colors, brightness and sharpness). There is still visible film dirt (see the three spots Mace Windu's close-up).

I don't fully see the point to invest in transfer equipment for an incomplete taping. ORF will most likely air the film again within the next couple of months (usually between February and April, but I just sent out an E-Mail to customer service for a more definitive answer and the possibility of acquiring a copy, as unlikely as that is due to copyrights).

I have someone in the family who can directly capture the full feature next time it is shown. Then only the shots with the hard-coded german subtitles would need to be replaced, resulting in a consistent quality transfer (most likely 720p broadcast, not 1080p as first assumed) of the whole feature.

Thanks for sharing those Starman.  I wouldn't say that a capture of the entire film is totally necessary.  I don't know if it's been proven, but I don't think the DVD and HDTV versions are new captures as compared to the theatrical version available on LD and VHS.  I think the 2001 DVD just updated the editing and added a few things.  The footage on your recording should match the HDTV footage of the 2001 version.

I think all that would be needed are the scenes that differ between the theatrical and DVD versions of the films, which could easily edited in with the another HD preservation.  There would be no need to worry about the crawl or subtitles, either.

Since of the missing shots come during the podrace intro and later, your recording already has all of the shots needed to reconstruct the theatrical version of the film.  In the end only about 27 seconds of the theatrical version would need to be recorded.

I'm just curious, though, are you saying this was broadcast in 720p?  It it was 1080i @ 50Hz, it's functionally no different than a regular 1080p/25Hz stream, and would match perfectly with the older 1080 captures.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

Wow, the German version looks really nice! And yes, it would be enough to have just the few scenes

Author
Time

Yes, I checked. 1080i it is.

Some updates:
Another Austrian TV channel is gonna air TPM in HD on December 27th. Not the best station, since they tend to show inserts and whatnot. Fingers crossed this is the same version, not the one shown on German TV.

Haven't heard back from customer service yet, maybe by tomorrow.

Are we certain we've found all of the differences, though? Wasn't that last one discovered only recently, and very difficult to spot?

Shoot, they aired the DVD Edition today. Well, here's hope customer service will get back to me within the next few day. Other than that, the final option is to sit down with my editor friend and see if we can export it from the drive with the equipment he could have access to.

So it had the DNR but may be the theatrical edition?

I would have liked to seen them all capped.  One never knows when something might come in handy when other sources don't help with an issue.

I've lined up the DVD version and the TB version and checked for differences between the two by inverting and merging the two.

The only difference I spotted was that this wipe, right before the midichlorian scene seems like it may have been redone.  I'm not sure though

Hi Folks,

sky Germany is doing it again and will air all 7 Episodes on the first weekend of may on their sub-channel sky Hits.
Due to the magic of a Linux based receiver box I’m able to directly record the decrypted Transport Streams untouched on HDD without the need to attach some HDMI capturing devices. They are broadcasting in 1080i50 at an approximately data rate of around 10MBit, no broadcasting logos.

Having enjoyed the excellent work of Harmy and many other people in this community more than once, I would be more than pleased to share the streams with anyone for whatever preservation purpose they could be needed.

I will let you know when everything is on my HDD. Any upload and hosting support is welcome.

Regards, disco

My interest is largely dependent on which version of the films they show.

I know there is no need for another broadcast stream that is derived from one of the Blu-Ray releases everyone already owns and chances are very high that most of the episodes aired on sky fall into that category.
But we won’t really know until we got our hands on them.
Let’s hope that they got some copies in their vault that give us some valuable stuff for restoration, de-specialization, re-specialization, etc…

OK, I’m still recording a second set of the Saga to make sure I have flawless TS’ of every Episode, but the first untouched cut of TPM is ready.

Yoda is CGI.
Its running time is 2:10:50 with 25fps including the german credits for the dubbing staff.
My BluRay Version with 23.976fps runs 2:16:10.
Doing the maths the 5mins and 20secs less running time pretty much equal the higher frame rate.

I will prepare all 7 Episodes as untouched TS.

Everyone who is interested, please PM me.

The Force Awakens:

UPDATE: Unfortunately this cap has a bitstream error at 0:30:07, causing artifacts in the lower half of the screen. (My cable providers policies state that 2 to 3 dropouts per hour are acceptable - ridiculous!) I will keep an eye on Sky’s guides for the next broadcast date.

Wow, those are VERY low bitrate for 1080i/1080p.

Noting that so far Star Wars seems to be the 2004 version. R2 does not hide behind the rocks and the Humdinger glitch is back for a frame.
