Question about the 2006 "GOUT" DVDs — Page 2

Amazon doesn’t vet it’s third party sellers much, if at all. I bought a DVD off of Amazon, and the seller sent me the wrong movie. It was an obvious Asian bootleg. I eventually got what I ordered, and that was legit though.

Sure but having bought stuff from certain sellers for years you get to know the names of legit used movie store fronts on there. For what probably equates to about 10 USD you can get this set from a seller that I know is reputable. Looks like people in Europe aren’t aware it’s worth anything.

I’m fairly certain those are legitimate- the 2008 set had an outer box like that and were kept in slim cases.

Don’t most Blu-ray players have a zoom setting for non anamorphic DVD’s? I know Panasonic does.

But then you’ve got the problem of the alien language subtitles getting cut off. Unless of course the player doing the zooming also automatically repositions the subtitles, which I suppose is possible. I’ve got a panasonic bd player so maybe I’ll test it out on a 4:3 dvd.

I’d pay money for a mislabeled ROTS disc that sported an R rating. 😉

Amazing there are fake Blu-rays since they aren’t out of print yet.

Yes, I did encounter that issue. Never understood why the films ditched the burned in subs on DVD. Even the widescreen Laserdiscs were that way. At least my Samsung flat panel can slide a zoomed in analog video source up and down to fix that. No such luck with HDMI inputs.

If it’s on a player rather than a TV it might move the subtitles for you. At least, that’s what the Xbox 360 does.

Yep. Those look like official releases. They came out a while later with slim cases and no inserts. Widely available in Canada. I actually work at a store that sells used DVDs and we’ve had these versions many times (and we do not sell bootlegs). I also own this set myself and it’s professionally pressed.

I’m looking to add the “limited edition” OT DVDs to my collection.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but…

Why?

Just download one of the many fine restoration projects here.

Because I’m a collector and I like having official releases. I do have the Despecialized Editions, but there’s something to be said about having the actual releases.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t have paid money for the GOUT in 2006, nevermind 2017.

You should probably just get your hands on Team Negative 1’s Silver Screen Edition of Star Wars '77 and the grindhouse releases of Empire and Jedi. The picture and sound are based off actual release prints.

um, isn’t the audio from laser disc? (at least it isn’t the print audio).

If it is, I didn’t know that. Could’ve sworn they said in the first post of their thread that they were sourcing the audio from the print itself but that was forever ago.

Which LD mix did they use?

I must be remembering the 1.5 release: which used Japanese LaserDisc (PILF-1236) for the main track.

The 1.6 release used DTS-MA HD English Stereo Track from Harmy’s DeSpecialized Edition as the main track

but yes, the secondary and tertiary tracks were sourced from optical prints.

Ah, so THAT’S why the cases look bootleggy. I found another listing of the set where you can see the thickness of the boxes, and those are definitely half-width. So I guess the only way to fit two discs is to put one on each side like that, and ditch the inserts. Makes sense.

So thanks guys, you told me what I needed to know, that there WAS a set - I actually had no idea GOUT was kept in print that long, so consider me surprised that the 2008 trilogy sets (now that you guys mention it, I DO recall seeing the prequel trilogy/original trilogy sets being sold, and sorta just assumed they were repacks of the 2004/individual prequels) actually had the OTV discs.

Those slim cases are ugly, though. So I guess I’ll go for the original releases in full sized boxes, with the inserts.

The fact that Lucas allowed what were originally intended as ‘Limited Editions’ that were supposed to be off the market by the end of 2006 to be repackaged again in 2008 IMO is another example that shows that he only is/was refusing to restore the originals, not release them.

you have a fair point, but also, once you have a product, i doubt you need to go back to the boss man to approve selling more… but to approve a new project, even if it is just putting a crappy transfer onto bluray, would that not require ‘approvals’ again. Maybe i am just naive about how strongly Lucas feels about holding back the OOT

That’s a safe assumption, not naive.

If anything it’s the situation with Fox that’s made Disney so silent on the matter.

They also could have pressed a ton of discs to the point it exceeded the initial demand. Fox apparently gave a lot of unsold full screen stock away to charity. These discs have the UPC slashed and a sticker pasted over it:

You can still find a lot of early DVD titles in bargain bins these days. I doubt Warners is still pressing flipper discs of the Batman movies for example.

Hi, I’m in search of officials DVD Gout editions. I just need to keep the english + french tracks, anyone can send me this please ?

I want to synchronize French Track with 4k77, using EAC3to (no reencoding), and I would like to compare surround effect with my french laserdisc version.

Thank you in advance !
