The cynicism in here blows my mind. Just because you’ve given up doesn’t mean the rest of the world has.

Every single time I see the Original Trilogy brought up in public circles I’ll see at least one person proudly mention how they’ve gone out and ripped their old VHS tapes to DVD.

The demand is there and has always been there.

Yeah but Alderaan has stated it will never ever happen and he’s never ever wrong.

Dear Disney,

I received the attached letters from the staff and members of Originaltrilogy.com recommending your release of the original Star Wars trilogy. I have accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed as rights-holders of the franchise, effective immediately.

While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I will personally receive the original Star Wars trilogy, I nevertheless concur with the judgement of Originaltrilogy.com that you are not able to effectively lead Star Wars.

It is essential that we find new leadership for Star Wars that restores public trust and confidence in its vital historical and cultural impact.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I personally do NOT want the ultimate box set that happens to include the OOT. I want a one-disc Criterion-style release that has been given the care and attention it deserves. Call it the “Legacy Edition” (borrowing from Mike Verta) and just make it a one-off thing. IMHO this will let Disney consider it just a branch off their normal blu-ray releases of the saga and it won’t muddy the waters with the SE crap.

I personally don’t care if it’s an ultimate box set or a stand-alone or it comes attached to the back of an emu. I just want it.

I haven’t posted on this forum in days. You should probably re-examine your life if you feel the need to include me in your posting as often as you do. I seem to be stuck in your head for some reason. It’s probably not healthy for you.

I also don’t agree that it could never happen. I’ve said that if it’s up to Lucas and Kennedy, it will never happen. Disney has the power to change it. They have deferred and not exercised that power. They should be held accountable, most especially by everyone here at OT.com.

Some kind of multi-version package is our best bet because it kills many birds with one stone. There is a ton of precedent that we can point to and say “hey these movies can have it and they aren’t as popular, why not SW?” (Blade Runner, Close Encounters, Exorcist etc.), it doesn’t fly in the face of the filmmakers’ wish by excluding their preferred versions, and it allows them to charge more which they love.
I think using BLADE RUNNER in particular as our gold standard is wise because the theatrical version in that set was easily achieved (and would be even easier for Star Wars now, scanning and cleaning scratches and dirt is cheaper and easier than it was in 2007). And everybody in home video knows Blade Runner, knows it has a cult following, but is less of a big deal than Star Wars. It’s a great shorthand to just say “hey do Blade Runner thing.”

Although I understand your point, this doesn’t sound reasonable. The SE is the official version as far as Disney and LFL are concerned. They are not going to release a box set with the OOT in place of the SE. It would either be a separate issue, or it would be bonus discs like the last time.

Of course, it’s extremely unlikely to happen at all, unless people pressure Disney to do so.

Silverwook, I think you should include an opening line acknowledging the 40th anniversary, but otherwise I like the new letter. Also, maybe people will agree with me and maybe people will disagree with me, I’m not sure, but I’ve always considered “thanks!” to be flippant. I would prefer “thank you!” but that’s your call.

All the more reason for them to include the '97 cuts. They could charge even more money for it.

But that would enable George’s “white slavers” thing. 😉

Yes but the more expensive it is the less likely people will buy it.

Dear Disney and Lucasfilm,

Today being the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, we just wanted to ask:

Will you ever release the original Star Wars trilogy in their original theatrical versions on Blu-ray?

We would buy the heck out of those if only we could.

Yes or no?

Please don’t leave us hanging.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
The staff and members of Originaltrilogy.com

I think the shortened version is much more effective. And the point is not only for someone at Disney to read it, but for hundreds or more other fans to read it and retweet, etc. There are tons of fans who comment on any OT related tweet I’ve seen, demanding the OOT or complaining about it not being available (and presumably only a few of them are from here). Hell, Harmy has tons of followers on his facebook that have nothing to do with this site. There’s an audience out there that might respond, and an essay is probably not the way to do that. Perhaps you could include a link to a fuller statement, but I still think it was probably too wordy as it was.

If this is a twitter thing, I think it’s just as important to try to find the right people to retweet it. Prominent people in fandom who don’t suck (or have Lucas apologist followers)? Celebrities? Geeky news sites? Edit: this part of the conversation probably shouldn’t be public.

Harmy and Adywan come to mind. (They could also spread it on facebook.) I haven’t asked them yet though. The rest is probably going to have to rely on things going viral on their own.

I like the short bit being an image leading to the longer letter.

The longer letter would have to go on the front page of the site.

Right. I was going to ask Ady if I could RT it from the SWR account, I’ll ask about FB too.
