Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion — Page 2

I finally got to see it to day and was quite impressed. I don't see that it needs much editing at all. But there are a few things:

Grevious' coughing: OK, I get it that he's sick... But why? Why is he sick? Is that just an excuse for Obi Wan being able to defeat him when Ki Adi Mundi and Aayla Secura couldn't do so together?

The Lizzard: I don't have much of a problem with it, except that it was a much brighter green when it first appeared than it was later on. Toning down the color saturation should fix this.

Anakin's Turn: I agree that this was pretty weak, especially compared to his turn back to the light. If there was something that could make it take longer it would help. I don't see what more could be done.

Vader's Scream: I don't know. It is way OOC for Vader, but the scream itself is handled well enough. BUt it's still way OOC and shouldn't have been done. Editing out the scene would be best. Cut away after he asks where Padme is.

I thought Anakin killed Shaak Ti.

Chaltab, Grievous is coughing because he got force-smooshed by Mace at the end of the Clone Wars cartoon.

Anyway, I'm just glad MagnoliaFan is on the prowl and wanting to work on an Ep III edit. I'll be looking forward to it.

(and dual-layer copies of the first two would be nice as well, but beggars can't be choosers)

I pretty much know what I intend to take out in my re-edit:

  • The Crawl. I already have it written. There are not heroes on both sides. There are heroes, there are villians.
  • Battle Droid's voices. Especially the Super Battle Droids. Could they have sounded any less menacing?
  • The Neimoidian that sounded like a California surfer dude.
  • Palpatines cheesy "yes" line during the Dooku fight.
  • Jar Jar's one line. It's lifted from Ep I and sticks out like a sore thumb. I would have taken 10 good Jar Jar lines (if there is such a thing) for this one throwaway. 'Scuse me.
  • Padme's lone reference to being a senator, for consistency with my other edits.
  • Anakin's "What have I done" line after Mace's demise. He's made his decision by this point and shouldn't second guess himself.
  • Padme dying because she's losing the will to live. This is clearly written by a man who has no genetic children of his own. Children would have given Padme a reason to live. This is a simple fact of nature. Removing this line brings the story back to the simple notion that she survived long enough to birth the children, but died because of the wounds inflicted on her by Anakin. It underscores the monster that he became. Furthermore, it establishes that he made his own nightmare come true.

Now, if we could only get a definitive list of the deleted scenes that will be included (after all, we know not ALL the deleted scenes get included on the DVDs), then I could figure out what's going back in. Hopefully Qui-Gon's scene will be in the supplements. Padme starting the Alliance is good to, as it gives her character more screen time and resolves more plot issues. I wonder how many "Senator" references I'll have to kill here. More on Kashyyyk would be good as well. That plotline seemed really choppy, and I think it's because it was edited down too much. But we shall see. Three days later and I'm jonesing for the DVD already.

On the whole, it'll be the easiest re-edit of the prequels, just like MF suggested. I look forward to how he continues the Dooku-not-as-a-Sith plot. Should be fun as always.

ADigitalMan- I was wondering if you could PM me with your versions of the Prequel crawls, if at all possible. I’m very interested.

Here's what I've (re) written for III at this point. Since I have, like, six months to work on this, it may change of course. Especially if we find it won't fit. Hopefully it will fit just fine.
------
Episode III
Revenge of the Sith

The Clone Wars have ravaged
the galaxy. The Republic is
crumbling under attacks from
Lord Darth Tyrannus, the
fallen Jedi Count Dooku.

In a stunning move, fiendish
leader of the Droid Army
General Grievous has swept into
the capital and kidnapped
Chancellor Palpatine, leader of
the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatists flee
with their valuable hostage,
Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi
and Anakin Skywalker lead a
desperate mission to rescue the
captive Chancellor...
-----
I think that this alternate version is important because:
1) it reiterates a very crucial point that was largely lost on non-die-hards in Ep II ... that Dooku is Lord Tyrannus, bringing clarity to who hired Jango and ordered the clones. Plus, it suggests that Tyrannus is now "out-in-the-open" as a Sith now that the war is on. (editorial note: Frankly, Lucas should have had his characters referring to "Lord Tyrannus" throughout the movie ... that's his Sith name. "Count Dooku" should no longer have any meaning to him.)
2) it establishes that Anakin is now a Knight and not a Padawan. Those who did not watch The Clone Wars cartoon probably need this bit of exposition before we see him without the Padawan hairdo.
3) I can't really figure out why Anakin and Obi-Wan weren't named in the crawl. Space, I assume, but hopefully I've made up for that in this rewrite.
4) The notion of heroes on both sides is blasphemy. Maybe that's the case in the real world, but in the world of escapist fantasy and fiction like Star Wars, you have your good guys and you have your bad guys. The line was utter bollocks ... and there was nothing in the plot to make me think that the bad guys were heroic. Greivous is called a coward who runs and hides. There aren't really any other "heroes" on the Separatist side ever mentioned.

Plus, if ye truly be thee MagnoliaFan of 'Edits' fame, its an honor to share the icon- but one question: Does GL know of the work you've done, or is it all covert-like? (cue James Bond theme here)

I just saw Episode 3 again, and found that the second time around the bad points stick out even more. As a character, Anakin is a lost cause. Vader, on the other hand, is still the most badass villian ever. Seeing the original trilogy again today proved it. Vader being rebuilt, putting the mask on, breathing, and being lifted from the table are all great. Unfortunately, what follows ruins a great scene. Having any out of character moments in those few minutes of screentime is a disgrace on Lucas' part. My solution to this is that after the Emperor asks Vader the question, he responds with a "Yes, master" taken from the original trilogy, and quickly cut away right there. This preserves Vader's mystique and individuality.
Republicans suck.

I think you need Vader asking about Padme, simply because it ties the two trilogies together.

I know it's going to get edited, as he's said he is going to edit the OT as well to help it flow with Mag's vision. I appreciate that.

I will offer one suggestion though:

There is no music AT ALL during the 'bridge' scene on Greivous ship. I thought of how cool it would be if the music from ROTJ played when Anakin and Obi Wan use R2 to help them escape (ala Luke and the Skiff). That's about all I would change.

Seriously, a fan edit will be nice to see, but I really do love this film.

I've got a rough assembly already sitting on my hard drive.

And I doubt George is too upset and trying to spite me, as I was invited to a screening at the ranch in pre release.

Did you tell him that he had a great movie in The Phantom Menace, if he would just recut it dropping alot of the Jar Jar humor in a special edition?

Vader asking about Padme should be left in; the "NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" should not. It's way out of character for Vader, and it implies a lot more pain if he says nothing and keeps it all bottled up inside.

Have to totally agree that the second viewing makes the film kind of bland. It didn't feel like it had a lot of weight to it and would love to see what MagnoliaFan could do with it. Though I just have to ask if he's still roaming this thread: did you ever think of getting some people here to volunteer their voices for some of the alien dialogue in your previous edits? The whole, backwards/overlaped dialogue with subtitles made it feel sort of fakely alien. Is there any chance in the future of releasing any DVD-9 versions of the edits? The video quality seems a little too compressed IMO. If you'll be doing III, new technology will allow you to fit more on dual-layer. Hope I don't get thrashed for this, a lot of people argue here that DVD-5 is just fine.

"And I doubt George is too upset and trying to spite me, as I was invited to a screening at the ranch in pre release."

Wow, now I know two people who have been to the Ranch.

"I just saw Episode 3 again, and found that the second time around the bad points stick out even more."

As much as I enjoyed ROTS after the first 30 minutes, I'm kinda scared to rewatch it for that reason. Maybe the timecode will keep me more distracted this time.

"If you'll be doing III, new technology will allow you to fit more on dual-layer."

Considering the fact that he'll be doing more cutting than adding, I don't see why that would be necessary. Besides, he'll probably post it as a DIVX so people won't sell his DVD-quality verions on E-Bay.

For me, most the bad things weren't as bad the second and third time around. Like Vader's "NOOOOOO!" The first time I heard it, I was horrified. The second time, it still sounded dumb, but I didn't really take as much notice to it. And the third time, it hardly ruined the scene at all, thought it would still probably be better without it.

General Grievous also got less dumb the more times I watched it. It might just be the fact that I knew it was coming, so i was able to prepare for it. The first time, all the dumb stuff caught me completely off guard (even though I was expecting it to be dumb, I didn't know where or when the dumbs parts would be).

Padme's death at the end got dumber the more times I wacthed though. The first time, I didn't even care about the "She's lost the will to live" line, but now I think it's a horrible line. Same with Palpatine telling Anakin he killed Padme.

I can't believe I forgot Palpy's "Yes", it was horribly out of place, even the cut was bad. I'm not that bothered by Vader's NOOOOOO. After all, 20 years have passed when we see him in ANH. It's the stumbling that got me. Still, even then I can understand the "getting use to his new limbs" angle.

For the question as to whether or not my identity was known... its a safe bet that someone there knew who I was.
I didn't go there and badmouth the PT. George has a pretty good idea what people think of them.
He does seem to really dig how drastically a film can take an entirely different form in the editing room, so I think something like Balance may appeal to him more than something like a Phantom Edit, which I think he views more like something thats been 'edited for television'.

I'm doing DL dvds eventually.
I had held off hoping that the TPM reissue with the OT dvds would have a better transfer and the new digital Yoda added to it, so I wouldn't have to go back and add him later. Needless to say, it didn't happen. I'm also extending 1 scene in Balance.
CW is getting a tad more of an overhaul. There was a scene that I wanted to add before that I couldn't get to flow. I've long since got it to work. There's also a few little changes throughout. I really wish I had the lost 20 scene to put back in and the original homestead stuff with the skeletal Threepio being completed, but oh well...
With 3, I certainly didn't hate it as much as those who loathe it, nor love it as much as its most feverent supporters, but I thought it was fun. On the other hand, it was far from perfect. There are parts that could certainly use a lot of work... I'm also weighing things like if the Qui-Gon scene is not on the dvd, should I cut the reference altogether and the one in II, or finish the Qui-Gon scene myself. Either way, Qui-Gon already has a pivotal moment in my version of III... a case of advice once given taking a horrible turn for the worse in a different context... And there is a pretty powerful moment in the "scene that explains it all" involving the tragedy that was Count Dooku.
And as for the weak Birth of Vader scene... Darth who?
The only guy named Darth I remember seeing in Episode III was named Sidious.

Don't fret too much. The scene still has its place elsewhere in the grand scheme of things.

Riktar, do you have I larger version of the front pic? I must say that i think I like it over the official poster. Especially Palpatine 'overlooking Anakin vs. Obi-wan'. Nice job.

Here's my idea for the scene at the end with Palpatine and Vader in the suit.

Palpatine: Lord Vader...can you hear me?
Vader: Yes, master. Where is Padme? Is she all right?
Palpatine: It seems that in the midst of your anger ( or in your absence) , Kenobi killed her.

(dialogue cut, pasted, and blended from elsewhere).

Dark chords play underneath. Music swells. Shot of Darth Vader's mask. Too shocked and angry for words. Hard cut to next scene.

I also agree that the medical robot should not say that Padme died because she lost the will to live. She would have stayed alive for the kids. Better is...

Medical robot: We're losing her due to to damages to the respiratory system.

Or something like that.

Actually i would like if Vader force grabbed Sidious' lightsaber and slashed and kill all the droids in the room.

That would show his pure anger and hatred.

I disagree on the 'Kenobi killed her' idea. Anakin gave the impression that Ben turned her against him, and that's enough. I doubt Anakin would believe he would then outright kill her. I think it works much better him thinking he's responsible. I also got the impression that his own suffering while being rebuilt might have affected her in some way. AS for him showing his anger, crushing most on the instruments was enough I think.
