Need help making Despecialized Edition DVDs - MKVs

I have files for Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. They are in MKV format. I have tried burning the files to a blank DVD, but that doesn’t seem to work. I have never done this before, so I need help. I don’t know what to do, so if someone could guide me through this I would really appreciate it. The more detailed the better.

If you want to keep it HD, and use your Xbox One for playback, you’ll need to make a properly formatted Blu-ray or AVCHD disc.

Load the MKV into tsMuxeR and have it build you a Blu-ray or AVCHD folder, then burn that to a disc (BD-R or DL DVD-R respectively) with ImgBurn.

If you want to use your DVD player (and it doesn’t have MKV or AVCHD support) you’ll need to completely rebuild each film as a standard def DVD. Last I checked, ConvertXtoDVD was a decent all-in-one tool for doing that.

So I did the tsMuxeR and it came out with a whole bunch of different files and folders. Do I just put all of it into one folder and burn that? It came out with two folders BMDV and CERTIFICATE. BMDV contains 5 different folders.

Yes, that’s the folder structure for a Blu-ray (or AVCHD) disc.

The next step is to make sure both BDMV and CERTIFICATE are in a main folder (make one if you need to, e.g. ‘Star Wars DeEd’).

When you open ImgBurn, use the ‘Write files/folders to disc’ option. Then select that main folder to burn - ImgBurn will know from the structure that it’s meant to be a playable disc.

So I did all that, but ImgBurn would go all the way through the process, but at 99% would give me an error and say it didn’t work. One time it finished, and stuck it in my Xbox One to check and it wouldn’t play.

What exactly did the error say? What kind of disc are you burning to?

I get a different one every time try it. I get one at 99% that says it can’t finish the disk. I am using blank DVD’s I bought a while back, can’t remember what type it was. When I take the disk out of my computer’s tray after attempting to burn, it is obvious on the back that there is something written to it, but when I insert it into my Xbox it get something along the lines of “This disk can not be played”.

The first thing I’d try would be some quality blanks. If it’s just DVD-Rs you want, Verbatims should be reasonably priced.

If they’re still giving you issues, there may be a problem with your burner.

Jonno,

Firstly, thank you for pointing me to the right thread.
So I don’t have any MKV files. Episodes V and VI are .iso files containing a file called BDMV (which I believe is an AVCHD file) and a certificates folder. Episode IV is just the BDMV. I realise I would need an external Blu-ray burner to write to a Blu-ray output but I thought a SuperDrive could still burn to an AVCHD disc. Is this wrong? I can’t find anything to suggest that Superdrive will burn to a BD. I think I’m getting tangled up in terminology.

Thanks

What size are your iso files? If they’re around the 7-8GB mark, they’re AVCHD images, i.e. HD video designed to be burned to (and played from) a dual-layer DVD-R disc.

(The AVCHD format uses the same file structure as Blu-rays - hence the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders - but at a size that means you don’t need a Blu-ray burner or disc. You do, however, need an AVCHD-compatible Blu-ray player to view the result).

That all being the case, your Superdrive should be able to burn those iso files to dual-layer blank DVDs. I don’t know Mac software, though - presumably Toast (or whatever) can open an iso to burn to disc? If it can do that, it doesn’t need to know what the actual content is - it’ll just burn those bits.

Ah! That makes a lot more sense! Ok so I’m on a OSX v10.12.6 using Toast Titanium 11 with the HD plugin. I think most of my problem is deciphering what Toast is asking me! So I need to aim for using a DVD-R in dual layer rather than burning to a BD-RE. No wonder it keeps spitting it out! Thanks, Jonno. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Bazinga! I was trying to use BD-REs or simple DVD-Rs. I went out and bought some DVD-R DLs and it worked! My new Blu-ray player plays AVCHD so I’m all set! Thanks Jonno!

From what I have learned with the Xbox one that Avchd files burned to duel layer discs do not work with the Xbox one you will need a blu ray burner just download ConvertXtoHD and stick the iso file and go into settings and turn letter box to stretch hit convert it will take a while then it will finish then buy some blank blu ray discs and open up imgburn hit burn files to disc go into documents folders and it will be titled what the avchd file was called then hit burn it will take about 30 minutes and stick it into your Xbox one and boom the original version of Star Wars in HD

Update November 2017 now they do work Xbox one just got a update so use imgburn and hit burn disc img to disc

I never tried it with dual-layered DVDs seeing as how I didn’t have any on hand at the time, but I burned the AVC-HD to a blank blu-ray and it worked like a charm in the ol’ xbone.

Jedit - Noticed your updated post

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer

If you just want to play it on your Xbox, you can put the files on a flash drive and play that way, no need to make a disc. That’s what I did the first time I downloaded the despecialized editions to watch
