4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 186

It’s funny. There was people complaining on blu-ray.com how the BD editions of RoboCop do not include the theatrical cut yet many people wrote back saying they don’t need the theatrical and/or the director’s cut was meant to be the original cut. Then another user made some obnoxious post about how people just ‘whine and whine and whine’ and neglect that studios pay to make these releases and supply great bonus features. I cut in making the argument how if people were ok to have a Blade Runner set with 5 or 6 versions of that film, including a workprint, what’s wrong with two RoboCop’s?? Same with Star Wars although technically that’s really its own animal unfortunately.

You know - if they could just take out the Greedo shooting thing, the Jabba Scene in ANH and the Vader Nooo I could probably live with the rest.

Although I really, really would like to get rid of Jedi Rocks also

The OT are not just mere films; they have become far more than that in just a mere four hours of content. So for Lucas to change even ONE thing is the worst act of cultural barbarism in film history. The OT should be kept pure, EXACTLY as it was on the day each film was released. There should be no SE whatsoever; but George’s decision to make it the ONLY version you can watch, why that’s beyond unforgivable. For Disney to continue this shameful reign of terror makes them even guiltier of perpetuating one of the worst cultural erasures of the last 25 years. They are lost films now, I can’t accept a world where the original versions can’t legally exist.

Excellent comment!

That’s one reply I never expected to see follow a frevious post.

You should try it more often.

Yeah, no. Frevious has burned one too many bridges with his asinine nonsense over the years for that to ever happen.

At this point, with 4K77 (and more specifically the Skywalker Edition that SkyDude is working on) and Poita’s projects in the pipeline, an official release of the OUT isn’t life or death for me. What does bum me out immensely, though, is the continuing resilience of the Lowry transfer. The fact is, I’m too young to feel that I’ve been personally robbed of something with the OUT being unavailable. I came to the understanding that the theatrical versions are the superior cuts a little later on when I could think about movies in a way that was more sophisticated, but the fact is that for basically my entire childhood I just watched whichever version was available. I had some friends who had the Faces set and we watched those whenever I was over their houses, but more often than not it was the 97 tapes, because those were the ones I got for my eighth birthday and my parents weren’t about to buy me another set (and let’s be real, I didn’t give a shit, I was eight). This is all to say that I’m not someone who’s going to refuse to see Star Wars in a theater because it’s the SE; it wouldn’t be ideal, but I do think I would still be capable of tapping into that eight-year-old who-cares-what-version mindset if they end up carting them out next month for the anniversary. What is inexcusable for me, though, is how piss poor the current master is. I popped in the blu-ray a few weeks ago to watch the Battle of Yavin after watching Rogue One, and the image quality is just such a goddamn bummer. So yeah. Certainly hoping for the OUT, but failing that, I’m in the camp that wouldn’t sneeze at a remastered SE with proper colors like the 97 version.

It’s all Lucas’s fault. He decided to destroy a film negative that was already falling apart, and then erase history for an entire generation of people and more. As long as the SE stays the official version for decades to come, I’m going to stay angry.

I still cannot believe that Kennedy buries the original cut of Star Wars while celebrating the 40th anniversary of said cut.

That would be a sad anniversary (with the passing of the jubilarian), indeed.

(My first post btw, I am a very long time lurker in these forums and just found the motivation to register. Living in Austria, Europe. A big hello to everybody.)

If we’re all still around in 2021, I know where we can throw the OOT release party…

As long as we don’t invite anyone from Pod Six. 😉

Sealab had such a great theme song.

Now I got the song in my head… underneath the seeeeeeealaaab, underneath the water…

First he needs to set up meeting with Ocean Spray and Sunkist executives to discuss preserving the fruit for future generations to enjoy.

Word on the street is they’re not that interested.

Maybe if they work the Bratislavan company, Hapi Djus. They can sell a lot of copies with that marketing campaign.

That’s Lucasfilm for you: fucking over their benefactors since 1997. They’re no different from ISIS or the Taliban in terms of cultural destruction. Hence the reason I’m angry all the time.

Shouldn’t they be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lucas finishing the movies? Oh wait, that would just be the first special editions. He changed them again in 2011, so technically this is the 6th anniversary of A New Hope.

How do you celebrate a movie that you do not make available?

I haven’t even revealed if I have an orange yet.

With that said, if I do have an orange, and I am trying to set up a meeting, I obviously can’t talk about it.

Yet.

ISIS and the Taliban did destroy cultural artifacts when they were in power. Remember that Buddha in Afghanistan that was blown up? Or the countless Mesopotamian artifacts that have been destroyed in the last three years alone?

My comment about cultural destruction isn’t exactly far-fetched then.
