I’m with Fang. I think the 2020 deal is the hold up. Just my opinion, I don’t really think George cares anymore. By the end of his run as head of LF, his opinion on restoring the OUT became more ‘I don’t wanna spend money on it’ as opposed to ‘I don’t wanna release it (ever)’. Now it’s not his money. Add to that the John Landis quote if you are still willing to take that with a grain of salt.
And finally the fact he released the GOUT. Yes they were released to stop the selling of bootlegs but just the same it pushed Lucas to agree to release the originals again in some form. Not to mention those 2006 DVD sets were supposed to be ‘limited editions’ yet they were repackaged again in a box set in 2008 which remained on the regular video market until the BDs. If Lucas was really adament about not having the originals available again he would have stuck with the ‘limited edition’ notion of the '06 DVDs or for that matter not released the GOUT at all.
There’s a lot that can be taken with what Kathleen Kennedy said but as Fang said I don’t think it fully ruled out a future release with both cuts. My interpretation of what she said was there will be no further changes because as she said 'those will always be (George)‘s’ i.e. she won’t tamper with someone else’s film(s). This almost goes back to the issue Lucas himself protested in the 1980s about movies being colorized. I don’t think it fully rules out a potential release with both versions especially when 5 of the 6 films that Fox still has rights to fully go to LF/Disney in 2020.
