The writing’s on the wall. “I wouldn’t touch those. They will always be his films”.

Followed by nervous awkward laughter… jeez.

I can see why people might want to interpret this differently or discuss what the question was she was answering exactly, but to me she quickly brushed over the issue to avoid what he was getting at for a reason. Perfect CEO behaviour. They don’t care about it, and they just want to move forward to new products to please all the saber waving people at the celebration.

Look at it this way: the single most compelling evidence of an OOT in the near future is John Landis, who said what he said nearly two years ago. Beyond that, everything else is speculation along the lines of “Well duh, Disney knows how much money it would make.” Every rumor in the last few years has been dashed again and again. Compare that with actual statements from multiple people in the company, Kennedy, Hidalgo, and others, all of which say in various degrees of bluntness that there’s nothing in the works. Hell, take the silence on the Mike Verta front, too. Either this is the single best-kept secret in the history of film, or we can assess all of the actual empirical facts that we have to look at. Those facts suggest that they’re just not interested, even if they aren’t contractually obligated to suppress the OT. There’s nothing unbelievable about that.

Yep. By now we have to assume he got the wrong idea, or this is so clandestine it defies most marketing logic.

I hope that it’s not the case of course, but apparently it’s such a sensitive question, that even the media is pussyfooting around it. Makes you wonder what it’s like for Lucasfilm employees. Remember how Lucas told one of the fans to grow up? I suspect it was a pretty touchy subject while Lucas was in charge, and it may be even now.

If they can make a new movie for the fans, then they should put out a Blu Ray for the fans

There is still a simple reason they wouldn’t want to talk about it just yet, and that’s the situation with Fox. We’ve known about this ever since the Disney buy-out but Lucasfilm has never commented on it, for obvious reasons. I really wouldn’t be surprised to suddenly hear something from them after May of 2020.

May the Force be with Harmy then.

Hey, look at it this way. When Harmy finally gets around to finishing his 1080p re-do of the despecialized trilogy Disney will have something even better: a 4k transfer of the real thing.

Author
Time

I’m turning increasingly pessimistic about all of this. It’s the right thing to do, and would make me happy, therefore it will never happen.

😕

I will always have Harmy and the 35mm scans. And so even if they release a 4K SE, at least then the source material for a new Despecialized set will be better.

What I really want is Mike Verta to release his stuff. The vimeo movies of his work in progressing were jaw-dropping.

i wonder if they will ever perfect behind-your-face 3D. then things really could sneak up on you in movies.

They tested Feel A Round movies in the 70’s, but it was too intense for average movie goers. 😉

LOL, that is insane! popcorn for $1? :p

Yeah, for 4$ you get to see a movie and eat a small popcorn. Not bad.

Yeah, as did I. I just wish the movie theaters would have reserved seats for all of their rooms, and not just the AVX/IMAX rooms.

That would be ideal, but I don’t think my local Cinemark even has numbered seats except in XD.

Really? For me, nowadays I find it hard to find theaters that don’t have reserved seating for all of their screens.

Well, up here in igloo territory, it’s only the AVX/DBOX/IMAX theaters, and sometimes, a special screening of a movie on the weekend.

Anyways, I’m still hopeful for the OOT being eventually released. Having concrete evidence that Lucasfilm isn’t in a contract that keeps them from releasing material is relieving. Also, my interpretation of the answer to the final question is this: All Kathleen meant was that they won’t make a new special edition.

Author

actually, she didn’t say that. All she said after he clarified the question is “I wouldn’t touch that”

Right. The boss, the one who of all people could pull those strings… won’t touch it.

Right. She won’t touch George’s final versions of Star Wars. That’s what I said.

She also said “There’s no one locking us into anything”

Right. What I’m saying is she didn’t say that in regards to the OT. sounds like she initially interpreted it as a question about the future is the franchise.

Maybe. Maybe not. But my rebuke of your point remind true: she gave no concrete indication about whether they have a contractual obligation to not release the OUT.

You’re all reading too much into this. By which I mean anything.

Just my two, out-of-context cents:

Robert Harris has gone on record as having said that Disney definitely knows what they’re doing with every single one of their products. For every home release that purists decry as inaccurate, there’s at least one archived print or scan far less fuddled with sitting in their vault for preservation reasons. So, yes, they do have versions of their animated closely that match the original releases more closely than what’s available to us.

Applying that logic, I fully expect them to restore the OT at some point. What I don’t expect is us to see that until they feel the time is right - if ever.
