Alien saga [Fundamental Collection] (Released)

Alien
I used the D-Theater as main source, and BD as second source, because the D-Theater was the Director’s Cut. Video is a bit wider than BD, and, after a careful cleaning, it retains more details, too. I used the PAL UK laserdisc as it used a distinctly different master; now, for example, the Ash head scene is green, and should be closer to the film colors.

as you can see, most of the shots have a wider image in comparison to the BD, except the ones shorter or not present in the theatrical cut

Aliens
BD as the only source, PAL UK laserdisc as color reference; as the LD was the Special Edition, I did all the needed steps to put it in sync with the theatrical cut; I have decided to use a brief (3s) shot from laserdisc, because is different from BD.

no more “mono-green-tint” now!

Alien³
BD as the only source, PAL UK laserdisc as color reference; LD colors are warmer and they seems to be color accurate - for example, it’s still blue out of the window in the second scene in Andrews’ office, as in the first one, while in the BD it’s greyish; also, the slight pink shift present in the BD is not there in the LD.

pink tint gone

Alien: Resurrection
BD as the only source, DTS NTSC US laserdisc as color reference; it seems this laserdisc, as well as the THX AC3 and earlier DVD, used a silver retention processed print as source or as color reference; colors are warmer, and no sign of the quite heavy pink shift present in the BD.

pink tint gone as well; increased contrast, and color variations are fixed - note for example the water in the 5th row and Call’s skin in the 6th one

Note: all versions are the theatrical cuts.

Status: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 released; Alien Resurrection will be released soon.

Opinions, feedbacks, critics, are all welcome!

What is D-Theater exactly? I’ve looked it up but I’m having a little trouble finding info about Alien specifically.

Also, how the hell do you crank out these awesome projects so quickly? Thanks for your awesome work!

EDIT: Will these be released in the usual, organ-based location?

D-Theater was an HD digital format on tape! Great quality, just a bit lower than BD/HD-DVD:

Well, new PC, a lot of free time, and nothing better to do… 😉

Yep, usual place, when ready - it will not take so long, indeed.

What if one is yet to have gotten access to the organ? Any alternatives?

On “Aliens”, have you replaced the shot of Bishop cut in half reaching for Newt that reveals the bottom part of Lance Henricksen’s body? Or have you left the digital correction made for the Blu-ray?
Also, I read about the order of some shots when Ripley gets the guns and uses Scotch tape to join them before going to search for Newt. Apparently, the original editing made a mistake in its order and the Blu-ray cut corrected that also. Did you go back to the original cut or did you leave it the way it was on the Blu-ray?

I left the fix found on BD, as I feel they are “right” somehow; but, as written before, I replaced a short shot with the laserdisc footage just because it was different - nothing important, just the shuttle before landing.

is there a plan for a extended version of all alien movies like your star wars?
that would be awsome.

Frankly? I thought about it, and I’d like to… but too many projects to finish first!

By the way, it’s available on the usual place right now.

Aliens V2 released - better colors, closer to theatrical presentation, and increased bitrate.

Wait. I started DL-ing the Aliens Fund. collection version last week off the “organ” site. Is that the same one?

Author

Nope, V2 has a 50/50 mix of LD/BD colors and, according to an expert, it’s the closest to theatrical presentation up to date.

Ah, I checked out the screencaps. Gonna stick with version 1 simply because I actually like the overdone colors. Gives it an older “VHS” style color-bleed kinda thing IMO, lol.

I noticed an issue on “Alien 3” : the French dub starts okay but during the movie, it goes way out of synch. As if there was a confusion between the two cuts. I have not tried it yet, but if this is a perfect Blu-ray sync match frame for frame, I can mux-in the track from my own Blu-ray to repair this on my side.

Another issue, on “Alien Resurrection” : the English audio track doesn’t work at all on my Dune HD Max and my 5.1 home-theater. It plays on my PC though. I don’t get it. I know it’s the theatrical DTS, which is cool to have and I wish you had put it lossless DTS HDMA, but oddly, all the other tracks work except this one. It’s not the first theatrical DTS track I’ve tried to listen to with my equipment, and usually, it works: “Jurassic Park”, “Star Wars 1997”, “The Matrix”, “The Dark Knight”…

Thanks for your hints!

Alien 3: you are absolutely right! 😦 should solve this issue ASAP!!!

Alien: Resurrection: another strange thing… 😄 try to play Alien 3 Italian track - it was made with the same software; if it doesn’t work, it’s the software, if not… I don’t know!

“Alien 3” Italian track decodes to DTS normally on my equipment.

Have you kept all your “Alien Fundamental” releases Blu-ray sync friendly so that we can mux-in any track we want? If so, I can mux-in the Blu-ray English track from my own Blu-ray of “Alien 4”.

Yep, of course they are in sync with BD!

Again, that’s strange, as they are from the same software… can’t explain that!

Oh, and if you have Timeline, try the English DTS track as well.

I don’t have “Timeline”. I don’t even know what that movie is. Never heard of it… and now that I see what the hell it is on IMDB, I’m not at all interested in seing it.

Thanks to Beber, now the French, German, and Spanish audio tracks are in sync!

Sorry about Timeline - it is a nice movie indeed, despite what many says about it… not a masterpiece, but, looking at the recent movies in the theaters, is much better…

Back to (off)topic: I may upload just that track, so you can test it.
