Yeah, Disney has been doing those retro Laserdisc sleeves for a while in the U.K.

I’ve watched this movie twice in theaters (once in December, once last week in a 2nd run theater). While there was a lot to like - the more down-to-earth and realistic ground combat, the chemistry between the leads, etc. - I didn’t care for it too much. In fact, I fell asleep both times at different points. That might be down to the premise, though; I’m not sure this is a story that I felt needed telling.

Highlights:
-The CGI people look pretty good. We’re not 100% there yet, but the mocap is pretty convincing (or as realistic as, say, modern animatronics).
-K2SO was a more fun HK-47
-Again, I have to commend the main cast’s chemistry. Felicity Jones and Diego Luna had great rapport.
-I felt like a little kid watching Vader kick ass at the end. What I was most apprehensive about ended up being what I enjoyed the most. Whoever was in the suit did his homework, that felt like Prowse lugging about like in ESB! And it got me both times, not just the first.

Bothersome points:
-I didn’t really care for most of the scenes on Yavin IV. Something didn’t feel right to me seeing there again in this context. And I’m not a continuity nut, so it wasn’t just that I was expecting Dantooine instead.
-Saw Gerrera felt forced. Everything to do with him lacked urgency and felt like a subplot, even though Jyn needed to find him to hear about the design flaw in the Death Star. I almost wonder if you could do the plot without him.

I didn’t actively dislike R1, but I don’t know if I’m going to bother watching it again. I’d probably give it a 6/10 if I had to score it.

Eh, I disagree. I prefer murderous and crude humor over dry humor.

This guy’s a hack

I didn’t think it was that bad. What has he done?

He starts off the video with a random complaint that has nothing to do with the quality of the Rogue One music. Then he gets into his analysis that’s basically just the same stuff people have been talking about for months (but that he passes off as if they were his own seismic revelations).

I checked out another video to see what his deal is called “Why Your Nostalgic Reboot Musically Sucks.” Kinda provocative and an interesting idea but he starts the video talking about how writing sequel scores is inherently easier than writing wholly original scores and I’m kind of ready to go along. But then he brings up Star Wars, and I’m thinking he’s going to counterpoint his thesis by talking about how brilliant ESB’s score is, but instead he talks about TFA and says that it’s all old stuff except for Rey’s Theme, which just tells me he has no idea what he’s talking about, especially because he refers to a bit of trailer music that wasn’t even part of the score or written by Williams. Maybe if the film had just came out I’d give him a pass but this was about half a year later. The guy was just talking out of his ass.

So yeah, from the two samples it seems he doesn’t actually know anything, therefore, hack. Lots of Youtubers like that, unfortunately.

Well there were a few interesting details that I thought worth sharing, but I admit it’s not really well written and lacks a clear opening argument or a real conclusion.

It’s rough but here’s a very nice video on how a Rogue One crawl could have looked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa-gaZLbeg0

Also, does anyone else think C3PO and R2’s cameo would have worked better if we passed them in the Tantive IV at the end? Similar to Antilles they could been seen briefly in a doorway or trying to get out of the hallway.

And after listening to Giacchino’s score on repeat I’m very happy with it. I think he did a terrific job of sparingly and effectively using the old themes while creating three new themes I enjoy as well as emulating William’s style.

I agree. I said that exact same thing (and maybe posted it somewhere here?) back when the movie first released.

As far as just humour goes perhaps, but as far as what fits in a star wars movie I’d go with dry.

I can’t listen to it with the sound on at the moment, but just by looking at the text I’m glad that particular crawl wasn’t in the movie. What a jumbled mess. The final paragraph is almost comically long, and the whole thing is peppered with sudden shifts from active to passive voice, baffling word choices, improper comma usage, and confusing exposition.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I pre-ordered the Rogue One Blu-Ray from Amazon UK a few weeks ago because I didn’t want to wait until May 4 (seriously, WTF, Germany?) and it still hasn’t been dispatched. This sucks.

The only difference was that I wasn’t struggling with basic comprehension of that crawl.

There are a few interesting crawls in the Star Wars Fan Edit section on here - though this one stood out for me:-

http://www.space.ca/star-wars-rogue-one-crawl/ (with video of the crawl)…

ROGUE ONE

The Jedi are all but extinct, the
Republic has fallen and in their
wake, the Galactic Empire has
engulfed the far reaches of the
galaxy in fear.

Persecuted members of the Old
Republic have been thrust into
hiding. Only members of the
REBEL ALLIANCE dare take a
stand against the ruthless
Imperial forces.

Deep in the Outer Rim territories,
the dastardly Director Krennic
has discovered the location of a
long lost friend; one capable of
completing the Empire’s most
powerful weapon yet…

The more I read it the more I like it. For me the crawl fits the style and tone of the the OT crawls, as well as the Rogue One movie itself. It isn’t too long and doesn’t overburden the viewer with details or minutia, and ‘scans’ quite well too.

The 1st paragraph setting the outline of the Star Wars universe since the last film (chronologically Episode III),

It’s 2nd paragraph setting the current events - along with the acknowledgment of a fledgling Rebellion starting to fight back vs the oppressive Empire,

and the 3rd paragraph ‘setting the scene’, as it were, for the start of Rogue One itself…

all very well done 😃
