Forget Revenge of the Sith, today is Return of the Motti day!

I have also returned, venerable Jedi Masters! The circle is now complete
You won this battle, Motti, it took me too long to get back from the cinema to be "the first"

Unfortunately I have quite different oppinion about E3.... the visuals were as always great (yes, I'm a stalwart ILM fan and CGI advocate), I simply loved the come-back of classic design style (older versions of Star Destroyers, Stormtroopers, TIEs, Lambda shuttles, OT-looking ship interiors(!) etc.), but I truly expected the whole movie to be better than E1 and E2. Of course I knew that the OT will remain superior, but I have hoped that the last movie of the saga will be more rememberable...

Yet it sucks
I even enjoyed the AOTC more...

Editing. Who the hell cuts a scene that should chill us to the bone? e.g. we should watch Vader's sorrow and anger, this scene should be filled with emotions that ought not to be "offed" with a quick cut to a new scene... remember, the E3 should be a tragic one. You can't contemplate tragedy in an MTV-pace.

Duels. Disappointing to say the least. I will not start the rant that in my book Palpatine should not wield a saber - it's about the choreography. As much as I hate Ray Park's character, Maul really rocked the screen with his fighting skills. The duel between Kenobi and Annakin was hailed as the best in the whole saga... while it looked like "the E2 conveyor belt - reloaded".
Mr Anderson doing Vader's fight scenes (in ESB) RULES! Noone will beat him.
http://www.fencingonline.com/academy/bob_anderson.htm

Action. Was good. Too good. Too much on the screen at the time. You should focus on the fighters, not what is buzzing in the background. Yet they simply had to do this overkill.
Watch the ROTJ space battle again. The starship fleets approach each other on the same level - just like "Earthly" ships. Here we saw a complete "0-gravity mix", which may be more "realistic", but does not help the viewer to watch "who is beating whose ass".
Hey, I know this movie had to be action-packed. But c'mon - guy wielding FOUR lightsabers? Two guys standing on a tiny "isles" in the middle of lava lake? What next? TWO Death Stars at once?
Remember that South Park joke when TV producers - after achieving huge success because their programme featured the word "sh*t" - came to an idea that to go further and get more viewers/income etc. they need the "sh*t" to be said twice during the show?

"Quantity" won with "quality"...

I will not start my whines about the acting, because we're in Prequels, remember? Everyone is just a plastic figure on George's virtual chessboard. I guess only Kenobi and Palpatine were saving the day...

I'm wondering if I want to see the movie again, after all... maybe after some time, when my emotions will settle down.
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...

I too enjoyed the movie. Yes I did have some issues with it, but I dont find it necessary to dwell on the negative. Over all the movie was very good in my opinion and pulled the story out of a pretty deep whole that was seemed to have been created with the first two movies. Im convinced there are people on the board that actually wanted to hate ROTS and would/will do anything to convince themselves that its the worse movie since 'From Justin to Kelly'.

I chose to post this in this thread cause i got the impression opinions that go against 'worst movie every' would be more accepted. I mean, listen to some of the arguements used for why it sucks. 'the new transitions sucked', 'i didnt like this characters name', 'grevious had a bit of a cold' man, and you guys call anakin a whiney bitch. the gripes you mention make up all of maybe 30 minutes of a 2.5 hour movie. Not saying all your greviences (no pun intended) are negligible, I too thought the same exact thing about R2's massive capabilities in this movie and how he did way to much

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

Someone please make a fanfilm of this, that sounds like it'd have great potential. ^_^

I went to a midnight showing. THe premiere was great with trivia contests, auctions, raffles(I missed the prize wheel though my dad got a free movie ticket, and one guy got an Ipod shuffle he sold for 50 bucks). All in all, a lot of energy at theb event, and plenty of swag.

As for the film, I can't really comment until I get out of tomorrow's screening with my sister. I'm pleased to say that the emotions kicked in when they should have, so I'm not not disspointed there. The look of the film is much better than AOTC, so that's a plus. Even the film prints were gorgeous, and not the pixalated crap AOTC was.

I agree on the pacing being too swift at times. Plot points were being thrown out left and right. Scenes that could've been longer were too short and so on. THe biggest evidence of this is twofold. One, the scene were Anakin turns. It's just too sudden. Everything is the rest of the film was set up right. The killing of a defenseless Dooku, the uneasiness with the Jedi. THe knowledge that he's gone against the code, so he's touchy about it. Everything up to the moment itself. He helps kill Mace, then goes, "What have I done" then immediately bows to Palpatine. It would've worked a lot better if he rejected Palpatine, maybe ran out of the office, with Palpy after him, convincing him he did the right thing. Just maybe a two minute scene after, "what have I done" like that might have made it seem less spontanious.

I also loath the fact that Padme dies. It clashes with ROTJ badly. A new plothole is born. I also agree that they could've dwelled after, "Noooooooooo", maybe show Vader collaspe. Have it be an image of the Dark Lord in his ultimate moment of torment.

THE GOOD

Just about every scene with Palpatine. The dialog was actualy good for most of them.

THat silent moment where Anakin and Padme each stare at the other's location. How he did it I don't know, but that one scene spoke more volumes on their relationship without a single word than all the dialog between them before that moment. Basically, any moment where this film took a breather, was usually good.

Seeing the Tantivie IV again. It didn't look quite right, but the set was great.

Order 66. The music and cimatography there was top notch, tears flowed. The impact was achived.

Anakin about to slay the Younglings. While the timing was off, and the character so changed, the scene did still have a twing to it.

Anakin's reasons for turning. While i still like the "Seasoned veteren trying to become stronger to help more" idea, this wasn't as bad as I thought. When I originally heard the reason, I thought it was lame and uninspired. I think it blended into Anakin as he had been established though. The turn might have been hasty, but at least the reasons were sound in that he's still trying to be more than he is. Still striving to be stronger. Trying to bring peace and to save what he hold dear, Padme and the Republic. It's not quite as selfish as it sounded, but more misguided.

Crash land on Coruscant. Much better than preceeding scenes.

Basic vehical design, and overall look and feel. Didn't feel quite OT, but better than AOTC, and more on par with TPM.

Dialogue and opening to the Anakin vs Ben fight. The writing seemed to fit my perception of Anakin. Ben could've been a bit more persuasive, but it worked, and tears flowed.

Music. But that's a given.

Anakin cutting down the Trade Federation guys. I really didn't expect to see them past I. I'm just glad they're dead.

Anakin's force choke of Padme. Given his motivation, it was pretty much his final straw.

Yoda vs Palpy. While I loathed that it interrputed the Mustafar action right as the viewer was pulled into it, it still worked mostly due to the use of the force and not really the sabers.

Seeing Alderaan. Seeing Mcquarrie's art come to life was exhilarating. THe whole scene I was less focused on Leia and Bail, and more on taking it all in. It's something I desperately wanted to see in the prequels, and, while short, I got it. I was practically hyperventalating it's name.

THE EHH

The opening battle. Visually stunning, but really hard to follow at times. Did help show a bond of Anakin to Ben though. The action was still a bit too much. Mostly showing off CGI. Still, the Clone Wars needed a huge space battle.

Grievous. Not the totaling gimicky character I was dreading. Still, he only really existed to get Ben off Coruscant. The fight wasn't bad. Nor was Ben's "Uncivilized" comment. Mostly though, I like how it seperated Ben from Anakin when Anakin needed him most.

Maces death and Palpatines emergence as Sith. I think the scene plays better in the novel when I read thje leaked chapter. In it, Palpy choose his words carefully so as to make it sound like he was innocent on the recorder. It worked nicely. I really expeacted from the novel that this be more extravagent. It's not bad, but the book owns the scene.

Kashykk. Where are all the trees, man? The battles not bad, and some rumored stuff was thankfully not there(the Yoda fart). A bit to short. Like everything else.

THE BAD.

Early dialogue and acting. It improved considerable when the drama turned up though.

Anakin and Palpatine's adventures with gravity. You mean to tell me the gravity is on a fixed plane and if the ship dives, people slide? That's somewhat messed up. It's not really bad, but it's still a bit odd. Though the scene was good for what it was.

Battle droid voices. Squeaky voices just take the menace out of everything.

Palpy's voice after the lightning and such. The makeup also flutcuated quite a bit in a bad way. While I understand it, it was downright near comical at times. Palpy is a cunning, dignified villian, not a psycho. It was pretty weird. I'll see if it bothers me much on repeated viewings.

THe way Yoda and Palpy interrupted Ben and Anakin. The scenes good and all, but it rips you from the emotional stuff to quickly. Place the scene cut a little later, or have the moment before the duel.

The rushing of Anakin's turn. As explained above. A big detail. I'll know for sure on the second screening.

Padme dying in childbirth. Was Leia remembering Bail's wife and getting it mixed up or something? I'd known of this for some time. Still, it's probably my biggest complaint.

As you can see, I liked a lot more than I didn't. All in all, I'd say that while it's not exactly the film I had been anticipating for six or more years, it's pretty close. If anything, had Lucas paced it more, let more things sink in, this could've been a great film. Still, it's probably the best of the PT, as it should be. Now, I nreally liked AOTC until recently. So maybe I'll find more faults with this one as years passs, or it could grow on me. Still, the feel was muuch better, and Anakins motives more clear.

Well, motti_soL and RRS-1980 my olde friends, I have to agree with both of you. All in all, I love that film because the most important scenes I was looking forward to were to my liking.

--- spoilers ahead ---

My main gripes with the film:

a) The first deciding fifteen minutes of the film, were full of silly practical jokes revolving around R2 and the oh so silly trade federation droid army. Not only did they go back to "Episode I - Style" battle droids - no, they let them talk much much more than they did in Episode I and what they talk is just plain, annoying silly. Having almost non-talking battledroids in AotC made the movie so much darker that it is really mind boggling to me how they could decide not to do that for RotS. Especially because the place where all this happens is supposed to be Grievous' command ship, the new 'cunning' cyborg commander of the battle droid armies. Well these first fifteen minutes will make you believe Jar-Jar Binks is now in command of the droid forces.

b) Grievous is a meaningless character that was merely needed as a plothook and then further abused by futile attempts to turn him into an uber-cool action oriented character. This character had much potential. He would have been awesome if the droid army would actually have been efficient under his command, but instead it is much less efficient than in Episode I. He would have been cool if he just had a shield generator and a combination of a laser-sword resistant melee weapon and blaster. Not using the lightsabers he collected (because of his deep hatred for the jedi) would have had him appear as a much much stronger character. Alas, all he really is, is a dull (and putting his overall inefficiency into account - rather unnecessary) replacement for Dooku (who had to be "killed off" to establish an important moment between Palpatine and Anakin).

c) Palpatine's makeup - at times it looks very good (almost still not as good as in RotJ) but at other times it looks really like he's overly fat. It's not very consistent. This would not have bothered on a side character - but failing to deliver a consistent look on palpatine is a goofup that distracts from the things happening at times.

d) You don't see wookies fight the way chewbacca did in the old movies, the only 'serious' fighting in a closeup scene is the scene I already saw in several teaser trailers. And that scene is ruined with another attempt at humor at an inadequate time - the return of the wookie tarzan call.

e) Violence dumbed down (you already can see this in the teaser trailer) when Anakin strikes down Nute Gunray, you merely see a superficial scratch like the sword had hit a metal wall, although anakins motion rather suggests slashing him in half. This method was first used in the Jedi Knight computer game series to reduce graphical violence and is rather inadequate at that point in the movie.

f) Vader's "Sith Eye" design merely resembles that of Darth Maul, which takes something away from the uniqueness of both characters Vader and Maul. I would have expected a deep pitch black in black for Vader.

g) Vader learning of the death of his love - too much b-movie drama, yet I expect to learn to love this because I love b-movies. I really had expected a direct confrontation between Vader and Sidious at that moment. Would have been a great way to establish the reason for Vader's fear of Palpatine.

What I really really liked:

a) How the core plot is handled by the main actors. Kudos to Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Yoda (Frank Oz and Rob Coleman and his fantastic team of character modelers and animators) and last but not least Ian McDiarmid. These guys really deserve the main credit for me loving this film.

b) The final showdowns are some of the most intense ones in the entire prequel trilogy - not necessarily choreography-wise, it's hard to explain - the climactic nature really gets across because they really present a 'duel of the fates'. And yes the musical score may add a lot to that. *takes a deep bow before John Williams*. I agree with RRS that the Maul showdown remains the prequel fight with the best choreography.

Edit: I thought of it a bit and I think one of the reasons I like these showdowns so much is the places where they occur. Two former friends attempting to kill each other in the hellish environment of Mustafaar and two arch enemies fighting each other in a place that basically represents the heart of the galactic republic. Both very powerful images. Just overwhelming.

c) The execution of "order sixtysix" really got under my skin. I hadn't expected that to happen in that special way. Kudos to George Lucas, I liked that one a lot - really gave me the creeps to see such a thing happen in such a radical way.

Edit: What would really have been great and would have added a lot of importance to the wookies appearing in the film, would have been if the wookies would have played a major part in the protection of yoda from the execution of order sixtysix. Throwing troopers around growling and getting into an escape battle against the imperials to ensure yoda's escape from kashyyyk.

d) Cameo of Jett Lucas was awesome, usually I do not like that kind of stuff. A great last stand he fights there, he must have felt very honored to be allowed to do this scene.

e) The architecture of the Mustafaar base interior slightly resembling the area where Luke fought Vader on Bespin.

f) That it was unknown that there were twins and the fact that Vader kept the possible existence of a child secret from the emperor.

--- spoilers end ---

There were a lot more little things that I liked in this last prequel episode, it is really a good film. But because of the things I did not like as stated above, AotC probably remains the film that manages to convey a sense of threat and seriousness (with a few rare exceptions of course) that the other two did not manage to convey, although they had the potential to do so. What really stole RotS it's pole position among the prequels, is the time wasted on meaningless slapstick and purely decorative action sequences that could have been put to good use for the dramatic climactic scenes in the film that occasionally suffer from a lack of time to fully deliver their potential impact. At the moment AotC and RotS are head to head in my book.

All in all it is a very good prequel movie and you should all go watch it in a big theater, for I am sure you will enjoy it a lot (set aside from the disturbing things I mentioned). May the force (and the soundsystem of your theater) be with you. ^_^

OK, about the good things...

a) I kinda agree, even though Ian McDiarmid was kinda lost. He felt like an "Animaniacs" villain, and he seemd to be having trouble with his voice. Sometimes he did it exactly as in ROTJ, sometimes he was just sounding weird. Ewan McGregor, on the other hand, was superb. Acting like that in a greenscreen is NOT easy, and he pulled it off brilliantly.

b) Hmn...

c) It was surprising, in the good way. I liked it very much.

d) Once again, surprising.

e) Hmn, sort of...

f) Yeah, it explains the new Emperor dialogue in TESB.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Holy Dear Sweet Mother of God!!! HE LIVES!!!!!!!

YES, it is Return of the Motti Day!!!

The MottiSignal (TM) does still work. The bulb was dimming and our electric bill is sky high, but it worked!!!

Oh, and I loved it, too!

MSD, regarding your negative point C about Palpy's makeup... in the theater I was at, everybody was laughing each time he showed up on screen. Here he is trying to convert Anakin to the Dark Side and people are laughing. And I can't say that I blame them. The makeup was just weird. Everything about his face was far too symmetrical. I was having visions of a really bad Gary Oldman as Dracula. The unevenness of the makeup in ROTJ made him that much freakier. Nobody laughed then.

And I also agree on your positive point C with the execution of Order 66. That was very well done and caught me completely off guard. Just watching all the Clones turn on the very Jedi that they had been working alongside of all those years was just wicked. One minute Commander Cody is handing Obi Wan his lightsaber. The next, he's ordering that he be shot down. The whole Order 66 sequence was my favorite part of the whole movie.

k, I read the book, as most of you have (and if you were disapointed with the movie i suggest you read the book if you haven't already) and I was expecting a lot more from the movie, I mean AOTC stayed pretty much true to the book, but they made a lot of changes. Remember that it is easier to diss things then to make good comments about it in most cases, but I had some issues with the movie...

General Grievous's coughing... I don't remember reading anything about it in the book however it appears in the game. And he got taken care of way too quickly and easily for my liking by Obi-Wan, when he had his four lightsabers...

It was a very depressing movie... I guess it's not a bad thing seeing as it was basically what the movie was made for.

At the beginning Artoo's comical scenes... I thought "Oh Cr*p, this is gonna be just like Episode 1" (not that ep1 was bad or anything... it's just that this movie isn't exactly meant to be funny. I suppose one or two of the scenes were kinda funny.

The droids talking like humans at the beginning when they hear Obi-Wan through the com-link... maybe it's just a droid I'm unfamiliar with.

Some the acting started to really piss me off... but on the whole it was a lot better then AOTC.

Lightsaber duels on whole... disapointing at the least. From the book I was so pysched about em but they were cut too short. Also Mace Windu, his battle was really spectacular in the book but in the movie it was nothing special. May you R.I.P. Mace, and your death shouldn't have been that way.

These were some of the things I liked:

The special FX were great, and the backgrounds were spectacular, although they kinda drew you away from the characters a bit sometimes.

The scenes that kinda made the crossover from ep 1,2,and 3 into the original trilogy was good.

And "Order 66", Great, I love the way it was handled.

Also, sad enough to say (I'm not a very emotional person) I almost cried at some parts of the movie...
...and unfortunately thats it for good.

...but on the whole in my opinion, it was a great movie although at some points I did have some major gripes.

And also "officially" if I want to refer to something should I refer to it from the book or the movie, and I also liked Matt Stover's writing of the book.
