Star Wars "Official" Canon Content Thread

I know we have many threads here devoted to different aspects of the EU and the new canon specifically (such as this: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/New-Star-Wars-comics/id/16890), but there’s no thread devoted to just the new canon content in general. So I figured it might be nice to have a devoted place to talk about it.

ONE RULE: no complaining about the new films. This is not the place for that.

As I mentioned an earlier post, these are the pieces of the new canon that I’ve consumed thus far (not really much yet, though I am interested in more and taking suggestions):

Film/TV

  • All the films, of course (Episodes I-VII, Rogue One), and The Clone Wars, which was grandfathered in.
  • All of Rebels, which is mostly pretty awesome.

Comics

  • All of the Vader comics and Vader Down, which were a very fun read on the whole.

I have the first vol. of Poe Dameron, all of Kanan, the C-3PO one shot, and Shattered Empire within reach and will read when the time is right. I will also 100% read Bloodline once I get the chance (and am quite stoked to).

Other than that? Not sure. How’s the main Star Wars Marvel series? Princess Leia? Lando? Chewbacca? Han Solo? These are the lines that are interesting me right now. I’ll probably check out Doctor Aphra at some point. I don’t have any real desire to seek out Obi-Wan & Anakin, though I wouldn’t mind reading it if someone put it in front of me.

Books

  • The beginning of the Tarkin audio book, which has been alright.
  • The Heir to the Jedi audio book, which was incredibly forgettable.
  • The Catalyst audio book, which was pretty damn good.

I’m fairly interested in the Aftermath series though am holding off until it’s done so I can binge read it. I know they have had kind of a mixed reception, but mixed means some liked it, and with the fact that they’re mostly the only substantial post-ROTJ content out there now, I really don’t mind taking a dive and finding out for myself (anyway if I really hate it, I can stop before I move on to the others).

Is Lords of the Sith any good? I feel like that’s still a fairly untapped time period. Lost Stars I’ve heard is solid so I might check it out at some point even though nothing about it really excites me. Is Ahsoka any good? Haven’t really heard much about it. I actually read somewhere recently that Twilight Company is really solid, which I found interesting because (as a VG tie-in) I thought it’d be pretty throwaway. Can’t be bothered with Dark Disciple. Is A New Dawn worth a look? Will check out the new novelizations eventually. Any other books I’m missing?

What stuff have you guys read?

I read Lords of the Sith, Bloodline, Before the Awakening and the first two issues of the flagship Star Wars comic. All three were good as, with Bloodline being really great, but in general I find the new canon to be less interesting than the EU. And obviously I’ve seen The Force Awakens and Rogue One, which are both good. Oh, and the first season of Rebels which was okay.

Not enough people read the EU.

I read Tarkin a while ago and barely remember it. I might reread it eventually since I liked Catalyst so much and it’s the same author.

Ahsoka has some nice moments with Bail Organa, but the actual story is pretty forgettable. As for comics, Lando, Han Solo, and Dr. Aphra are all really wonderful. Chewbacca and Princess Leia were underwhelming, I wouldn’t bother unless you’re trying to read everything.

I’ve consumed:

All the movies
All of The Clone Wars (including the story reels)
All of Rebels
Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic series
Shattered Empire comic series
Princess Leia comic series
Lando comic series
Chewbacca comic series
Obi-Wan & Anakin comic series
Kanan comic series
Darth Vader comic 1-20
Star Wars comic 1-19
Star Wars Annual 1 comic
Poe Dameron comic 1-2
Lost Stars novel
The Perfect Weapon short story
Before The Awakening anthology
Smuggler’s Run novella
Moving Target novella
The Weapon of a Jedi novella
Aftermath novel
A New Dawn novel
Lords of the Sith novel
Tarkin novel
Blade Squadron SWI short story
One Thousand Levels Down SWI short story
The End of History SWI short story

I own but haven’t finished Heir to the Jedi. I wasn’t enjoying it and stopped after finding out it (and Tarkin I believe) were Legends EU that were finished but unreleased that doesn’t fit right with the Star Wars comic series which is probably more canonical.

Lords of the Sith is ok.

Lost Stars is my favorite part of the new canon and I recommend with all of my heart.

A New Dawn is great, gives some Kanan and Hera backstory and introduces Rae Sloane, the main villain of the Aftermath series.

I’ve read

A New Dawn
Tarkin
Lords of the Sith-
Lost Stars
Battlefront: Twilight Company
Aftermath
Bloodline

The ones I recommend are Lords of the Sith, Lost Stars, Twilight Company and Bloodline.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I am really excited about the upcoming Thrawn novel, and I have to hurry to order and read the original Thrawn trilogy first.

No need the to buy the Legends books. Check them out from your local library. IMO they’re a complete waste of money and I’m glad I sold all of them or gave them away.
No, I haven’t bought anything current canon since I can borrow them from a friend. (Comics, books, video games, etc. Not the action figures since IDGAF.) I’ve already borrowed and rented TFA a couple times but I’ll never willingly own it. Will do the same for Rogue One since I already saw it twice in cinemas.
Don’t care about proposed fan edits or extended cuts for TFA or Rogue One.
Would much rather own other movies for my Blu-ray disc collection compared to anything Star Wars. Yes, I’m done with buying it but I don’t mind borrowing it.

But yes, if any of you get the chance and are able to, watch THE CLONE WARS in Chronological Order. It’s how I watched it the first-etc. times and never Broadcast order. REBELS is fine too. Especially since it takes a lot of inspiration from Ralph McQuarrie and the other OG OT concept artists.

I can’t find any Legends novels at my library except for a couple of Legacy of the Force, Fate of the Jedi and The Old Republic books, and the Darth Bane trilogy. Also, the Legends stuff I’ve read so far I’ve mostly liked.

The Thrawn trilogy is ok, but I’m not sure you need to read the Legends books before you read the new one. Though it is entirely possible that the new book fits into both canons, judging by its place in the timeline (pre-Rebels). Cause I’m sure Zahn can’t be arsed to care about there being a new canon.

I really doubt they let him just go rogue and write whatever he wanted to haha

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

I’m close to finishing Aftermath: Empire’s End and I’m enjoying it quite a bit. I think Wendig has finally found his footing with these. That said, Norra Wexley is one of the worst Star Wars characters ever, and Temmin would be too if he didn’t grow up to be Greg Grunberg.

Tim Zahn wants to write more Thrawn books in the new canon:
https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2017/04/timothy-zahn-wants-to-make-more-thrawn-books.html

The idea they mention for a story about Thrawn’s relationship with Vader doesn’t really float my boat, but I’m hoping he’s got some more interesting ideas that he can’t go into so as not to spoil anything on Rebels. I’ve said this in the Rebels thread already, but I’d love to see Thrawn disappear into the Unknown Regions at some point next season and then reappear later in the timeline. Zahn claims he wants to write four Thrawn books; I can’t imagine they’d all be set between III and IV.

Speaking of canon Zahn Thrawn books, about how long does it take for paperbacks of Star Wars novels to come out nowadays? I don’t want the big hardcover of the new book. I think Tarkin came out on paperback pretty quick, but I don’t remember too well.

@DelReyStarWars: “Like a novelization, the book is based in canon, but not necessarily canon where it doesn’t align with a film.”

So it’s free reign, unless it isn’t. Which makes it head canon, just like all EU stuff.

Yep.
