Sony has a long history of "Not invented here." See MD players (including the ATRAC codec) and Betamax (which was just officially dropped by Sony about a year ago) for good examples.

(That being said, I recall reading that Sony is aware of the problems with this mindset, and the new American president plans on doing something about it.)
