You might want to hold off doing a Superman 3 just yet as a I have a higher quality source tape (Superman III - ITV MAY-07-1990). I also have another tv broadcast coming in the post this week. I’ll add more info soon.

More info please…

I’ve now received the other tape and it turns out to be the first UK broadcast of Superman III - ITV (HTV) SEP-05-1985. I believe both tapes are higher quality then the current fanmade releases on Mysleen. I hope to upload some pics or a video sample over the weekend.

Cool, looking for a good version W/O/C.

Assuming the ITV version is in PAL, can it be restored to NTSC/Film?

The Yorkshire Television airing is a PAL speedup. I would guess that the other ITV airings are also sped up.

Ah, so dropping in the footage as is, but within the black border of the original film. So the sides drop out during the added footage?

It’s one way of doing it is suppose. My preference for part 3 would just be completely 4:3.

At first glance I thought this looked ridiculous, but after thinking about it I’d say it makes the most sense. If it’s not too much work could you make a small clip or gif of the transition?

Hi there, I have to say I’m curious as to how people come across buying these old tapes, is it through meetings at conventions and the like? could you give a little more info?

I have come across sites before that tend to look defunct, wherein people list their collections and want lists for example.

Sorry about the delay but I’ve been sick all week with the flu.
Anway here’s some more detail about both tapes.

Superman III - ITV (Thames) MAY-07-1990
http://imgur.com/a/kI6Q6
The 1990 broadcast is the better quality of the two but isnt complete. It’s missing 15 secs from the intro and 20 mins from the main film (from when the blind man loses his dog, until when clark kent arrives at the school reunion).

Superman III - ITV (HTV) SEP-05-1985
http://imgur.com/a/NGlM9
The 1985 broadcast is missing 45secs from the intro but the rest of the film is complete (with comercials). Quality wise it’s not as good as the 1990 brodcast.

Here are some unfiltered samples of both tapes.
1990 = https://mega.nz/#!31ZEyIqQ!0A8M3ey8T4I1EHyuqwCkkb5FRqBTAh_p8wx95pZKS_8
1985 = https://mega.nz/#!OopmiLpL!RVjs9m1TSYdk0MLLZhlnFqNFarRphIXuMSxDuZnj1OQ

Obviously they both need some work to bring the best out of them e.g. Avisynth filters, denoised, colour corrected, etc.
If anyone whats to help just let me know.

These both look pretty good! There’s more visible image on the 1990 tape, but I like the look of the colours on the 85 version. Great resources to haver available.

I think this version is currently the best all around quality version you can get although it isn’t complete. I hadn’t noticed until after it was released, but the “Smallville Flash” part of the drinking scene is missing. It’s present in the BLAX version and the YTV version, but not the ABC or 2 disc PAL version. It’s probably worth going though all versions just to see if there are any other bits exclusive to the different captures.

That is weird, because I used to have what I assumed to be an ABC-sourced bootleg (commercials cut out, “EDITED FOR TELEVISION” superimposed right after the opening credits, and I think there was a network announcement over the end credits) I got from a tape trade back in the early 2000s (along with the hard-subbed Danish TV broadcast of II and a VHS dub of the Japanese laserdisc of IV). And it definitely had the “Smallville Flash” scene in it, I vividly remember that.

(FYI, it came from REDACTED, a Washington, D.C.-based tape trader I got in touch with via the old Superman Cinema board, who I just discovered was later profiled in a Washington Post story on movie piracy. I have not contacted him since I got the VHS tapes all those years ago. I have no idea if it was taped in D.C. or elsewhere, since it had no ads. I also have no idea which airing it was. I got rid of the tape ages ago, though I MAY have sent a copy to a friend.)

I’ve checked the ABC footage, and after being IVTC it still has the interlaced look. Again, this is only for newly inserted footage. I’m thinking this was an issue with how the thing was broadcast in the first place.

I am thinking that the telecine, whether done by ABC or WB, had ghosting/after-image issues. It may have been done at ABC - there was a Star Trek II project in another thread, and there was no way to perfectly IVTC the image, there were some blending artifacts that just couldn’t be eliminated. And even though I was only born in 1987, I know from some of our old tapes that some of the Bond film airings looked atrocious in this regard, I had a tape from 1989 with a promo of OHMSS that was a smeary mess. And I think I still have a 1986-87 airing of Goldfinger that looks for all the world like it’s 5-10 years older than it is.

Could I still have the Fan Edit, whichever cut this is since I don’t have the DVDs? I only have the Superman Anthology Blu-ray disc set, UK cause it was cheaper, since I sold the DVDs I had ages ago. It’s a beautiful set and still hoping SUPERGIRL, both cuts, will be on BD eventually.
Still holding onto the DVDs though. (The WB and Anchor Bay Limited.)
I’d prefer an edit without any commercials, just the main features and any promos could be accessed in the bonus section on the individual DVDs for each film. DVD9, please.
Denoise = remove broadcast artifacts or the film grain? Cause if it’s the latter then no thanks. Hate DVNR. Want it to look as close to the source as possible.

A small update after being away from this project over Chinese New Year:

I have finished work on Superman 2 up to the point where I need to add in the RIC footage. I still need to try ang get that looking as good as possible before adding it into the project. All the footage is P&S, and colour corrected. I’ve also replaced the credits and a few scenes (where the blown out whites of the bluray are particularly noticeable), with footage from the HDTV airing. The villains released from the Phanzom Zone and Coca Cola sign explosion are 2 examples.

I need to clear out some hard drive space to get myself in a position to render when it’s all done. Then on to Superman 3.

OK, looks like Superman 2 is just about done. I need to add in the little bit of footage from Superman the Movie that’s in there for no good reason, and then I can try a render. Going to need a set of eyes to look this over and check for errors. With all the manual panning and scanning, as well as all of the colour correction and different sources, there’s many possible ways it might need fixing. Give me a shout if you want a preview.

Here’s the timelines to give an idea of the amount of work this has been.

Top: HD sources (bluray/HDTV) synced to the RIC audio
Middle: Shots panned and scanned. Some RIC scenes audio retimed
Bottom: RIC exclusive footage added in/ recolured

The KCOP or Salkind International Cut that was being worked on by some dedicated fans has been completed. It is the longest cut of Superman The Movie. It clocks in at 188 minutes. The clean up is good. It’s presented in full frame with mono audio as it was originally presented on its TV airings. It contains footage not found on any official release. Check out Caped Wonder for more information. Really great for any other Superman fans out there.

I can’t comment on the Superman TV airings but in general, I’ve found stuff without even looking. For instance, one night on the way home, in my local area, I came across a box of VHS tapes and they appear to be screeners and rough cut promos that belonged to someone at ITV. The cases even had “Please return to…” labels with the network address.

On another occasion, at a flea market, I saw a BETACAM tape bearing the title of a long running UK TV programme, going for next to nothing.

Going back to Superman, I’m curious as to how they reached an agreement with Warner Bros. to make the preservation available for download from the site…

There was another thread about that other version and the people involved completely freaked out. You can still find it on here

I can’t imagine the files will last very long where they’re at before someone gets C&D’d into oblivion. Downloaded for safekeeping.

That was my immediate reaction too when I saw the brazen nature of the availability. The webmaster appears to have the blessing of WB for the site but does it extend to offering content on that scale, I wonder?

As we get closer to the 40th Anniversary of STM, I would like to jump in here and add to the current fate of the Superman extended International cut (as it has been commonnly called). Last year we officially learned more about the status of this cut from the Warner Archive Podcast. According to the podcast. all WB has at this point is a 2 inch broadcast tape master of the longer cut, but all the elements of STM do exist and so it is possible to do a high quality remaster in HD. But the potential cost in putting together a proper cut at least for blu ray release is high, but George Felenstein (my spelling may be wrong) is confident an official release will happen at some point. Any decision, according to George, would have to be made at a higher level than the Warner Archive, but he certainly is putting a good word to them. And with the Criterion Collection now releasing special editions of Warner films, I imagine they will put out a collector’s edition of STM a la their recent release of “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” (where you have both the General Release and restored Roadshow versions plus some stuff).

Thanks fo the useful info! Do you know if the 2 inch tape in widescreen? I would assume so based on the deleted scenes on the bluray.

The 2 inch videotape I believe was transferred from the 16mm pan-and-scan/standard master print of the TV cut prepared for worldwide television release.

Oh OK. I wonder what the source for the deleted scenes on the bluray was? All of the footage is cut exactly as it is on the TV version but in widescreen. I assumed there would be a tape of the International Version in the archives that had the full aspect ratio. Do you think that Stuart Baird perhaps edited these scenes prior to them switching focus to Superman 1, and they were then thrown in to the TV version in the state they were left?
