Have any of you ever heard of sending a Television station a DVD for broadcast airing? This producer that i met today and will probably be working with wants to do this and it doesn't make sense with my training from a well-known Television school. Anyone who works in the idustry who can give me the 411 on this thing? Please Help!! any advice will be much appreciated!

I used to work for 2 stations in the past. and this is (as far as I know) a BIG No,No. your station could lose its license!

watch out for the FCC.

thanks jango, but tell me what are the quality issues with doing this vs. sending the show in on tape. and by show I mean one that we have produced and put together ourselves. Not a copyrighted show that was made by someone else. And by tape i don't mean vhs or even s-vhs but the professional formats

I don't think DigiBeta has a quality loss associated to it. It is tape, but it is digitally encoded on tape, and less lossy.

Oh I see. well if it is your own work, my guess is if the original was on a digital format a transfer should be 100% if its going back to another digital format.

Its been some time since I worked in Tv. so things could have changed by now. at this time I do not remember All the different formats used. I remember
before digital some stations used Ed-beta tapes a lot. mostly analog formats.

IMO.

The logical thing would be to call the station and see if they actually have the equipment to enable playback of DVDs over the air. If they don't, then you can't send the programme on a DVD. In terms of quality, I don't think you would see any degradation.

yeah, that'd be the thing to do gundark. I just didn't get it at first, but i've had time to think about it and ask around. It's not a common thing in the US TV stations but it is in third world countries and some small stations, it is used a lot. In terms of quality, the current compression alogorithims used are not suitable for professionals to say it's okay. Once we have better compression schemes, and HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, then it'll start to become exceptable to professionals. It's coming, but it's not a good idea at this point, not when you have the option of going with a pro level tape format.
