At the Cannes Film Festival for a screening Sunday of "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith," his last chapter in the saga, Lucas said he pays no heed to the bad reviews that greeted the current trilogy's two predecessors, "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones."

"We have two fan bases. One is over 25 and one is under 25," Lucas said. "The over-25 fan base is loyal to the first three films. They actually are in their 30s and 40s now, so they're in control of the media, they're in control of the Web, they're in control of everything, basically. So mostly, what you're hearing from are people over 25 years old.

"But the films those people don't like, which is the first two, actually are very fanatically adored by the under-25-year-olds, and as you get up on the Web and you listen to these conversations, they are always at each other's throats, and the devotion for each group is pretty equal."

Lucas compared the debate to older rock fans talking up the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, while younger fans worship hip-hop.

"I'm curious to see what happens in about 10 years when that other group starts to get their voice. How they'll remember it. I hope they remember it as one movie," he said.

Riiighttttt, George.

We just don't *understand* the PT films, folks. I mean, us OLDER folks. Why, I just don't know what to make of you kids and your midichlorians. Why in MY day we didn't need no blood infection to be in tune with the force! And what about romance? Why in MY day we had to earn love of the opposite sex! When the ladies told us they loved us, we just looked at them and said 'I know." I just don't know what to make of kids these days and their 'Sand is rough and irritating' lines. Maybe its just my memory though... in fact, I coulda sworn that this one time, in the Cantina, this dude named Solo shot *first*.

Where's my adult diapers....?

I just read that on IMDb and was thinking the exact same thing. Good to know Georgie fancies himself a youngster, eh?

I'm under 25, George, and I don't like the prequels, and I want the original trilogy back. So, what does he say about that...

Although... I know a SW fan who is 24 and absolutely loves the prequels and said he dosen't like the OT any longer...

What I find truly frightening is that the more I think about the whole Lucas situation and the more I watch some of the great old documentaries on the OT, the more I find myself thinking that George is only a few steps away from falling off the same 'emotional ly troubled billionaire' pier that Michael Jackson fell off of. Perhaps he just can't handle the pressure or the power, but I feel truly sad for the guy. I can't believe that Star Wars itself broke him like this; I'm sure he has problems and issues that we have no way of knowing nor do we have a right to. But instead of dragging us down with him by pissing on everything that made him great (which also destroys whatever integrity as a filmmaker he had hoped to build) I wish he had just chosen to do what he did with things like the novels or the 'Clone Wars' cartoon- pass the torch to more capable (if not more talented) hands. He is and will always be the father and creator of Star Wars. He didn't need to prove that. We all know it. Instead he chooses to act like a snotty, bully-ish little kid in his attitude towards his creations and those who gave him what he has.

Wasn't he the overly dedicated 34 year old filmmaker who made Star Wars? I wish we could remind him of those days. In a way, I'm glad the films are almost over. I'm almost starting to feel that he should just walk away from all of it entirely- no more re-releases, re-edits, petitions, etc. I don't know... maybe I'm just feeling MY age now.

Any under-25 year olds want to comment? Is Lucas correct to your minds?

I'm waiting for Lucas to pull some kind of Howard Hughes. He'll just crack and wind up locking himself in a room on the ranch, naked, watching his movies for mistakes, and peeing in milk jugs.

Does this mean that the PT is his Spruce Goose?

Kind of like the Simpsons when Burns got his casino. GL's sitting in bed, finger nails a mile long, beard down to his waist, Kevin Smith is there, picking GL's pubes out of his teeth, GL says "Look, I've designed a new tie-fighter. I call it the Spruce Moose. Get in, Kevin!" *shows him a tie-fighter model* "Uhhhhh, George, don't you think it's a little too small for us to fit in?" *GL pulls out a revolver and cocks it* "I said GET IN"

Well, I still like Kevin Smith. So I'll take Sage's idea but replace KS with Rick McCallum.

That Simpson's episode was a spoof of Howard Hughes last days...

Anyone remembers that "mad tv" skectch someone posted here some months ago? I bet George will turn into that. "If you wanted fries, why didn't you order them?"

Same for me, but I'm 24.

The best parts of the first 2 prequels = the general underlying story leading into the OT. But what made it onto the screen was hokey, dull, or badly acted.

Minus the sabre duels, that is. I don't care what anyone says, the sabre duels in the first 2 prequels were nice. And I still have my hopes up for Ep. III. I did for the first two prequels, and even after the disappointment of those, I'll still have my hopes set high for this one.

And that's a pretty shitty thing for GL to say. But it further proves how much he studies demographics.

Okay, how 'bout this: I'm 16, NOT a stoner (never touched weed but once in my life), and The Beatles are my absolute favorite band. AC/DC and The Who run close second (tied). I hate hip-hop, but Green Day is my number three.

You guys are pretty frickin' pathetic. Please spare us the psychoanalyzing of George Lucas. None of you know a damn thing about the man, and have never met the man. George Lucas is probably more sane than any twat on this board. After all, I don't see him sitting around on a message board whining like a frickin' baby because he didn't get his way. Get out and perhaps find a girl and stop whining because some filmmaker you don't even know didn't give you what you want. That's truly sad. Insulting Lucas doesn't change a damn thing, and it's not going to help you get what you want.

Y'know what else is pretty pathetic? Your coming onto a messageboard where people do nothing but whine and bitch that they don't get their way just to whine and bitch about their whining and bitching. That's a bit hypocritical, don't ya think?

And also joe_H you will please note that in this case we (and I specifically) were letting Mr. Lucas' words speak for themself. That is not to say that I won't partake in dime-store psychoanalysis with the best of them and have done so elsewhere in these forums. You on the other hand chose both the wrong thread and the wrong approach (IMHO) to elaborate your opinion. Or perhaps YOU have some issues yourself that we could help you with. We'd be glad to. Being a 'member' of these forums for the length of time that you have (since August 2004) would tend to indicate that you have an interest in the OT. Perhaps you are just now in another stage of denial as to the decisions that GL has made regarding the releases of the OT. Are you having relationship problems? Are you being taunted unmercifully at work or school and thusly need to turn around and spew your pent-up wrath at a group of people who truly love some of the things that GL has created? If so (and as a dime-store therapist I can guess this to be the case) there are many ways you can find help and support. Did the homely girl in the next cubicle at work reject your advances because you have a toy Jar-Jar on your desk next to your stapler? Did you perhaps get harassed in your high-school because, under your long black faux-leather trenchcoat, you were wearing a Babylon 5 t-shirt? Or maybe- just maybe- you are hiddenly ashamed by the odd stirring in your loins whenever you see Ewan McGregor extend his long, shiny Jedi weapon.

Either way- we accept you. You'll get through this joe_H.

Now be a good lad and go start your own thread.

Pricisely. In fact, it's even more pathetic, since he claims we have no lives, yet he has time to ridicule us? What's the matter? Your phantom girlfriend too busy tonight?

We're on this board commenting on a quote Lucas made. Isn't that why these places exist? If we were here kissing his ass, would you be happy? Would you be complementing us on our butt-kissing skills? I doubt it. You'd be calling us the same thing, except replace "whining about Lucas" with "being too in-love with a stupid movie."

If it's one thing I've learned, the one that ridicules others, is most likely the one with the problem. In the end, I don't think you take issue with us having a problem with George, you just want to make yourself feel superior. "Look at me, I'm telling off a bunch of people I don't know on an issue I barely care about. Aren't I cool? I'm so much better than those whiners, because they whine about movies, and I whine about them." Get off your high horse. You're no better than us, and we than you. That's assuming you actually wish to contribute something.

As for me, I turn 22 at the end of the month. I love the old films and the EU, and I like the PT. They have their problems, and could've been better, but in the end, they get the job done. I have bigger issue with the SE. THe PT is pretty much in my kanon, the SE isn't.

By that reasoning, Lucas is pretty frickin' pathetic for trying to psychoanalyze his fans (or at the very least, putting the blame of his films on the fans.)

"After all, I don't see him sitting around on a message board whining like a frickin' baby because he didn't get his way."

I'm curious...how are you going to feel when it turns out that sitting around on this message board whining like a frickin' baby doesn't get you what you want?

"Get out and perhaps find a girl and stop whining because some filmmaker you don't even know didn't give you what you want."

Does your girlfriend know you are whining about some posters you don't even know, and won't give you what you want? (Does your girlfriend give you what you want? That might explain your presence here. )

"Insulting Lucas doesn't change a damn thing, and it's not going to help you get what you want."

Coming from the guy who calls us "twats". LOL! See any real changes yet?

BTW, just thought I'd add - we are getting what we want. Take note of the many versions of the OOT on DVD available as Torrents. Thanks for playing!

Anyone care to defend this statement without sounding like a total schizoid?

Because comparing his saying "My two trilogies seem to appeal to two different fanbases" to someone who's ON TRIAL FOR MOLESTING CHILDREN seems pretty goddamned far-fetched to me. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even seem to be a comparison. And you're saying it with a straight face.

You also compare him to Howard Hughes. Once again, let's make the direct comparison

"The two trilogies seem to have two completely different audiences." -- George Lucas
"I never leave my bed and have my blood completely replaced with virgin mormon blood every other week, and I hate niggers." -- Howard Hughes.

Yet JOE is the psychotic one. Okay. You're so knee-deep in your overreaction that you can't even OFFER a defense of your wallowing in character assassination. The best you can do is "You're a troll." and "Stop reading it if you don't like it."

It's like you guys KNOW you've gone flying off the deep end, you just don't care.

Is there anything particularly WRONG with his GENERAL characterization of the two fanbases these trilogies seem to have? Because from where I'm sitting--I don't see it. Yes, it's a generality, which means there will be exceptions, and sometimes a fair amount of them, but jesus--I don't think his analogy is that far-fetched. Certainly not to the point where he's seriously compared to a child-molester and a racist modern-day vampire.

And yet JOE is the one with issues that need psychoanalyzing.

I could make this entire thread swallow their own tongues in about 5 minutes with the moronic self-serving histrionics you guys spew daily, but I'm nice and I save my efforts for when you guys go REALLY over the top and need to be spanked for it.
