A lot of those were done to fill out a timeslot, (when there were less commercials) or make a movie into a two night “event”. Cable tv and VHS eroded the novelty of watching a theatrical film on broadcast tv by the mid 80’s.

Movies on broadcast networks are a rare thing these days, and basic cable allows nearly everything short of the F word and full nudity now.

I think feature films still shoot alternate scenes for the “airline version”, since cursing and nudity are right out.
