Blu-ray Wins?
The next generation DVD format seems to get finalized.
by Anoop Gantayat
May 9, 2005 - Following recent announcements of a move towards compromise in the heated battle to become the next generation home video standard, the Tuesday morning Nihon Keizai Shimbun contains a first report on the shape that such a compromise will take. According to the paper, Sony and Toshiba have entered into final preparations for a format which combines disk technology from Sony with software technology from Toshiba. The two companies plan to offer an unified format to members of their respective high definition video forums as early as next week.

Toshiba's decision to give way on the disk format was apparently made after examining cost issues related to the Sony technology. The merged format will make use of Sony's 0.1 millimeter Blu-ray disk technology with Toshiba's software in place for reading and writing from the disk and handling copyright protection. Toshiba's 0.6 millimeter HD-DVD disk technology will be dropped. The resulting technology will be offered as a new format. It's unclear at this point if the new format will adopt the Blu-ray or the HD-DVD name, or if something completely new will be used.
Sony announced late last year that the next generation PlayStation would make use of the Blu-ray format. The Nihon Keizai article reveals that, as part of the compromise, Blu-ray supporters Sony and Matsushita were demanding the highest possible storage space for future IT and game applications. This would suggest that, even though Blu-ray as it was known is gone, the new merged standard will end up serving as the format for PS3.

Expect further announcements later this week or at E3.

Although I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach to the next generation of dvd's, I really hope the unification happens. I have some questions though:

-How much of an improvement will it be over current top-tier transfers, like LOTR, SW PT, Matrix, ect?

-How will older films (with scratches and faded/grainy film) look? Can they really take something 25 years old and make it look better?

edit: By the way, good thread, Darth Simon. I think the old one was started and frequented by that which shall remain nameless.

I don't see how any medium could improve the quality of the images any better than those on the SW DVDs. Like the changes, hate them, or neutral, you can't deny the quality is pretty much flawless.

[sarcasm]I cannot see the individual threads in Han Solo's Corellian Blood Stripes.
I cannot read the markings on the credit chip he flipped to Wuher.

I do not yet own an HDTV but I like Blu-ray more than HD-DVD. I think most people would pick a bigger format that can hold everything.

I also heard one of the companys is working on a Third format now! thats just great.

IMO.

Can't guarantee when he'll read the message so I'll answer for him... yes. Hence his title "CAPITAL punishment".

True HD sources shown on large HD-compatible displays (say, 50" and larger) make DVD look like a joke. Much finer detail and better color accuracy. I have many native 720p and 1080p clips stored on my PC that I play on my projector when I'm in the mood to have my jaw hit the floor. Going back to DVD afterwards is tough. And my projector is only 720p.

Film as a medium has far more resolution than even HD (including 1080p). Old films that have been properly restored will look spectacular. Grain will be more apparent, but that's what it looks like in the theater, so I won't complain about seeing it at home.

The Star Wars DVDs are limited to 480 lines of resolution, just like every other DVD. When you more than double that (1080p), the difference is remarkable.

The "flawless" quality of these discs is also debatable. From a technical standpoint, the transfers themselves are very well done, but the rushed restoration job on the source itself leaves us with a halfass presentation.

If Dayv types something that isn't in capitals, then he's lost all or never had any respect for it. Like Microsoft or Jar Jar.

I think this was asked in a long ago forum about who has what home theatre equipment but i'll ask it again because I can't find it now.

What type of projector do you use?

Just curious.

If this turns out to be true, this means the discs will hold 50 Gbs, vs. 30 Gbs. That will be nice.

"How much of an improvement will it be over current top-tier transfers, like LOTR, SW PT, Matrix, ect?"

Well, just for perspective, an uncompressed capture of the SW LD is 20 Gbs. Using HuffyUV (with a 4-1 compression ratio) comes out to around 30 Gbs. If you could see the Huffy capture of SW, and compare it to the MPEG-compressed DVD version, you would see a stunning difference in detail, and this is just at 480 lines of resolution. As Jay noted, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray has the capability to go to 1080i (although the HD spec goes to 1080p), so the amount of detail possible is far greater, on par with what is actually scene on a movie screen.

Psycho,
you sound like you might have sources in television as well. I was wondering if you could tell me whether or not you've ever heard of sending a DVD of a show to a T.V. station to be aired?

IIRC, the Playstation will be able to play Blu-ray discs.

My question is, should BluRay fail and HD-DVD be the de facto standard, does that mean that Sony will release a PS3, v.2? Wouldn't they pretty much have to in order to keep the customer base? I wonder if they'll try to find a way to make them both compatible with the new system. They have time.

Sony has a long history of "Not invented here." See MD players (including the ATRAC codec) and Betamax (which was just officially dropped by Sony about a year ago) for good examples.

(That being said, I recall reading that Sony is aware of the problems with this mindset, and the new American president plans on doing something about it.)
