If you ask me, this really needs to get an HD upgrade. Take note that the Special Longer Version is my second favorite version of the film, and the one version of the film that introduced me to the original Star Trek crew.

Seconded

I hereby call in a debate for an HD upgrade of the Special Longer Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Is anybody with me?

I’m definitely in for the HD upgrade. It shouldn’t be too hard to splice together the SLV using the Bluray and deleted scenes, right?

What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

Who else agrees that we should have an HD version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture: Special Longer Version?

Oh I agree, but who has the resources, abilities and inclination to make one? You?
Wishing doesn’t make it so.

I have recently got (from MS) the Special Longer Version on DVD. Many thanks to everyone involved in this superb work!😃

For many of us, myself included, we grew up on the SLV of TMP. I couldn’t tell you which scenes were part of the additional 12 vs the theatrical release until the DVD/Blu Ray versions were released. As far as I was concerned the studio had released the SLV officially and that was what people saw and ingrained in their brains for many years. I respect directors cuts, but let’s not forget the contributions of actors, special effects, other producers and writers, which shape the movie accordingly. And in this case the studio released this version (and not just some minor tweaks) and it should be part of the film’s historical record. A studio with the financial means for a franchise as beloved as this owes its fans a proper HD restoration of this version since it served as the definitive one for so long in many people’s minds.

In addition to my prior post, I don’t want to understate my appreciation for the work of restoring the SLV in standard def. This effort is greatly admired! Even though I own the theatrical version on blu ray as part of a box set, I think content trumps film quality here. I’d rather not watch what is an edited down version to me. That being said, although I own the SLV on VHS, it has obvious limitations and I’d be very grateful to have the best presentation possible. If someone could help me out in getting Fan Filtration’s excellent work I’d be very happy!

Yippee Ki Yay Mr. Falcon.

Sorry, couldn’t resist…

I’m more interested in PCM. Did the LD not have it or did FF encode to AC-3 to save space?

(Sorry, couldn’t resist either, just a Die Harder)

According to this post, only the Jpn SLV LD had digital sound…

Awesome! Let’s hope someone can do a bit-perfect capture at some point.

Thanks so much to Fan Filtration and everyone else who helped me out! Btw, I know JayArgonaut saw this, but someone just posted about the TNT Die Hard 2 TV cut. Ironic timing.

What is the best way to download this version? I have not viewed my VHS version for years. I suppose a hybrid version of the DE and SLV would be the ultimate version for me.

I’ve just found a fan-edit of the scene, in which Kirk leaves the Enterprise through the airlock. The creator (pun-intended) made his own matte-painting of the Enterprise’s saucer section around the airlock-set.

https://youtu.be/BfhYjOa13Dw

This really looks awesome and I’d love to see it in some form in future fan-edits of TMP.
However, I think for any purist rebuild of the Special Longer Version like FanFiltration’s, I think it should stay in it’s original form with the soundstage intact.

Thanks. That saved me from having to do that very thing myself.

I have been very unhappy with all the edits of this one so far. The Director’s cut is better than the Theatrical version, but there is so much missing that doesn’t need to be that could make an extended version that is more polished than the original extended version. This was the one missing visual effect, but the sound needs to be worked on and there is a lot in that longer version that could be cut without missing anything. This and Dune have been on my mind for years, and this puts ST:TMP in the realm of possibility. Though not until I have my Star Wars project finished.

This is perfect! Perhaps we can use this for the HD upgrade of this project.

I think everyone might disagree with me on this since people didn’t want any changes to be made to the original footage.

Was a “raw transfer” ever released? I am seriously considering re-working this in HD using the Blu-ray. I have already upscaled and cleaned up the deleted scenes, so I could work on this, but I’d need a good quality transfer of the original LD/VHS if somebody has it

The SD deleted scenes will cut in better with the HDTV, which is an ancient scan, but has a much more natural contrast than the BD and less DNR.

I don’t have it unfortunately

I have it and can send it via PM. It will take awhile to upload, as I’m not on great internet right now. You can throw it on Myspleen if you want, too. All the Star Trek HDTV caps are only on Usenet and they are ancient posts at this point.

And I still have the German SLV on VHS, of which I’ve wanted to digitize the audiotrack for some time now. If you could have any use for it, let me know. 😃

English or Deutsch? But even if it’s German the video could be useful

It’s the German dub.
So if I understand you correctly, you’d like to have both the video and the audiotrack?
(I bought that VHS many years ago because I wanted to adapt the German audiotrack to FanFiltration’s restoration. Unfortunately, I’ve never gotten around to it.)
