Five-to-seven seasons is the longest any TV series should run. Eight-to-ten is pushing things a little too far. Eleven and up? That’s when you know zombification has set in.

What about Doctor Who?

Never watched any original Doctor Who, and all that material is precisely why I’m reluctant to try.

I prefer the original show to what’s happening with it now, there’s something in there for everyone. I’d recommend either The Aztecs or The War Games to get a glimpse at the show in its original form, and The Tomb of the Cybermen for the second incarnation. The third kicks off strong with Spearhead from Space, and I’d also recommend The Green Death. The Ark in Space or City of Death (written by none other than Douglas Adams!) for the fourth and most popular, but beyond that you go into the 80s, of which I’d say The Visitation is the only one I could recommend you.

Yeah, I see what you’re getting at. But it’s really great stuff some of the time, each of the stories I recommended are very different from the rest, so you’re bound to like at least one of them.

You do realize that “Spearhead from Space” comes right after "War Games’ right? You basically said that the show switches from it’s original form to its 2nd incarnation, back to its original form, and then to its third. ???

Huh? No, by “original form” I meant the show as it was under William Hartnell, then I said second incarnation, then third, and so on.

Oh, I actually meant The War Machines, not The War Games, whoops!
