4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 135

My only hope is for the Legacy project to be released. Certainly Disney/Lucasfilm could just pay for Mike Verta’s past time and effort and simply release his restoration. At this point I’m not even sure I want Disney/Lucasfilm doing it because I’m sure they’d manage to screw it up somehow.

You’re right, they probably would, as they have done numerous times in the past.

The fact is that fans with the right technical know how will always be able to produce the best results because they are fans, not employees of gigantic corporations. Any official restoration has a strict budget and time frame, not to mention guys in suits sticking their noses in at every turn to see how costs can be cut. A dedicated fan of the film working in their spare time has none of these considerations. Similarly I imagine the average Fox employee in 1996 really didn’t give a shit what colour the rebel soldiers’ shirts were supposed to be.

LucasFilm are very much aware of Mike Verta’s project (they’ve warned him against releasing it after all) so Disney have probably at least considered buying it from him for commercial purposes. Given their obsession with maximising profits that must surely be more appealing than starting their own long, pricey and difficult restoration project.

We keep obsessing over the o-neg and whether or not Disney/Lucasfilm would manage to screw up the restoration somehow.

If they hired someone like Robert A. Harris to supervise, it would alleviate many concerns. He also wouldn’t necessarily have to use the o-neg, at least not for every last shot in the movie.

Would it be Disney in charge of restoring Star Wars material or Lucasfilm? If it’s the latter then I’m not sure that what Gluck says would even matter. That, and we don’t even know what question he was answering. Better to just reserve all expectations until April rather than go in optimistic or pessimistic.

I agree. I don’t doubt that Gluck knows what he’s talking about, but he wouldn’t be the one to spill the beans if this is actually happening. To my knowledge he didn’t say anything about whether or not restorationists are or have been working on this stuff.

He essentially only confirmed, that the negative of Star Wars is still conformed to the SE. He mentions nothing about the scans of the SE negative or the OOT elements. In other words a digital reconstruction of the OOT can exist, or can be reconstructed, while the physical negative is still conformed to the SE, and the OOT elements are in storage.

^This
The digital bits article basically told us nothing.

There is also a reputable poster on the blu-ray forums that says he knows for a “100% fact” that Disney is in the process of or has already finished scanning at 4k every single scrap of Star Wars film in their possession.
Now, I’m sure that’s pretty standard for Disney for archival purposes, and it obviously doesn’t mean they are working on an OOT, but at least it’s something…

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

It is nice information, but if they have done that, then why would they not work on the OOT at that point? This isn’t Song of the South, there’s no reason for them to not release it.

…why?

That’s nothing compared to those who think the Diamond Edition Disney tapes are worth something: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Beauty-and-the-Beast-VHS-1992-Walt-Disneys-Black-Diamond-Classic-/182452425052?hash=item2a7b03115c:g:yUEAAOSwTuJYn95x

Jesus, I should show this to my parents who got rid of all those.

I should show this to my cousin, who still has it, and almost, if not all of the Black Diamond Clamshell videos.

I still have every VHS tape we’ve ever owned, except the few that were eaten up, I don’t understand why people get rid of them.

After reading all this, I believe the next release we’ll get (maybe this year) will be the restored SE trilogy in UHD, and a 4k scan of the 35mm OOT. Not dissimilar to the individual movie releases where the originals are considered bonus materials. I would be ok with this, and hope for a full restoration sometime down the road.

There is literally nothing to indicate that Disney and Lucasfilm will be releasing the OOT…ever. It is virtually certain that any 40th anniversary special announcement will pertain to the 4k scan of the Special Edition and yet another Special Edition release.

All this talk may force Lucasfilm and Disney to make a formal statement once and for all. Though I have nightmares of them saying its not going to happen and The Last Jedi teaser having Hayden Christensen in it, and still no Luke.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Fox kept the original clippings of the OOT all these years and Mike Verta was requested to have a meeting by officials that were interested in his restoration… but none of this indicates anything.

I doubt a bunch of random websites reporting about the possibility of a release will force them to say anything, no more than a bunch of random nobodies on this website talking about it would force them to say anything.

You’re right, it means nothing. From the mid-1990s until 2017, Fox has had the original cut frames in their possession, and in all 20-something of those years, the OOT was never restored and never released. And as far as anyone knows, absolutely nothing came of Mike Verta’s meeting.

There is literally no evidence to suggest that the OOT has been restored or will ever be released by Disney. None.

They did nothing with the clippings because George Lucas said so.

Oops.

There are literal examples of people literally using the term literally and I find that to be literally redundant
