Gotcha. I agree with Tyr about MF DOOM, he’s got a very smooth and laidback flow. He reminds me a bit of Biggie. Only problem is that if you’re using Spotify it’s pretty hard to find his stuff since he’s gone by so many different names.
Hip-hop and rap have changed a lot in a short amount of time, even stuff from 2007 sounds noticeably different from modern rap. It’s entirely possible that a fan of old rap won’t enjoy any new rap. I guess I’ll just post some stuff that I like, no guarantee that you will too;
P’s & Q’s by Mick Jenkins. The song is a gimmick, really, but it’s a cool gimmick that showcases Jenkins’ writing abilities. Around 110 instances of the letter P and 23 of the letter Q.
Gang Related by Logic. A story told from the dual perspectives of young Logic and his older brother and how they view gang culture.
Average Joe by Kendrick Lamar. Another commentary on gang culture from the perspective of Kendrick, an “average Joe.”
Letter to the Free by Common. Political song about the state of black America, even if you don’t agree with the message or have no idea what he’s talking about, I think it sounds good.
Let Nas Down by J Cole. A true story about the aftermath of J Cole’s first hit song.
