apartfrom the making of's, the other extras seem to be mainly the same as off the laserdisc. I still wish I'd not been so tight fisted and bought at the time it was avaialble though.

I was working at WHSmith when this came out and a friend of mine bought a copy - wish I had now, what with the 25% discount we used to get. muppet.

Of course thanks to OT.com, Rikter, BabyHum, Deleted Magic and the rest we have the opportunity to 'own' something far better.

So, eDroj, since you bought this collection, can you tell us if this set has the burnt-in Japanese subtitles on the bonus "making of" specials?

That sure is a lovely piece of Star Wars merchandise, now if only those crummy VHS tapes were unaltered OT DVD´s. If only, if only...

I havent checked them out yet.... but I will after work today! Why do you think they should have japanese subtitles burned in? It was released in the UK so no need for the japanese subs.... I will check it out to confirm.

I have this set, it was bought for me as a 21st birthday present.

God, I feel old...

Heavy as hell, the scriptbook is printed on really nice stock and weighs a ton. looks great on the shelf, but the tins been through at least a half dozen house move though...

so they can make a new "ultimate dvd boxset" after episode 3 & make everyone buy yet another copy of the "new & improved" trilogy.

Except it's VHS, whereas the Japanese version is LD -- gorgeous.

Actually, a nice hybrid would probably be best. Use a little AviSynth magic to keep the Japanese video almost everywhere, but use crap VHS from Executor to help remove the subs.

No offense, guys, but while the subs can be a little annoying, it's not like you are watching an actual film. It doesn't get in the way of any drama or important characterization.

In fact, they can let me read ahead a bit, or watch without audio.

Thanks for the info on the subs. I don't necessarily care about them being there; in fact I'm learning Japanese, so it actually helps sometimes. Was just curious if they had them or not. Looks like a pretty impressive set. And like most people, I am awaiting a new "ultimate" style set of the movies; whether that be on DVD or the next generation of video discs.

Has anyone done a VHS to DVD transfer of Classic Creatures or From Star Wars to Jedi from this set? The US NTSC videotapes don't look that great and I wonder if these would look any better. If they do, they could be a good non-subtitled alternative to the Japanese laserdiscs which have subtitles.

I would love to do a transfer, but I don't have a capture card.... :-( :-(

Didn't Rikter say not so long ago that he'd acquired the non-subbed versions? Otherwise I would have done it from my own set

Rikter has non-subtitled laserdisc transfers of The Making of Star Wars and SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back. (In fact, I used his transfers for bonus discs I am creating for the EditDroid set.) I don't believe Classic Creatures and From Star Wars to Jedi ever became available on laserdisc in the States. Hopefully, a PAL VHS transfer might look better than the blurry looking official NTSC tapes.
