I’d say this most recent rumor, coupled with the fact that Mike Verta has practically dropped off the face of the earth, is probably a good sign.

I think you missed the point.
Which was?
Tyr said he won’t believe the OOT is real until he’s watched the end credits. In my version, he gets to the very last scene before he discovers it’s a new SE with a single change.
As in mine. Except he actually has to watch the credits to find out.
Jones isn’t credited in the original cut of Star Wars.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

I doubt that Disney or Lucasfilm would ever release Mike Verta’s project.

I’d love to see Verta’s project, but I’m not sure I want to see it as the official release. It looks better than the original film did, and I just want to see a good restoration of the original matte work from Lucasfilm.

How do you know?
I’m not aware of a major studio ever accepting something like that, especially since they have access to much better material and a whole department of people to work on it, let alone releasing it.

Huh? Mike Verta’s project is a restoration of the original film. What else would you want?

Actually, now that I think about it, didn’t he intend it to be a proof of concept rather than a finished product for them to release to the public?

He did. I don’t think that they would be interested in the latter. They just don’t need it. It would save them some time and money, and they should take it, but I think they prefer to do things themselves.

He had said something along the lines of if they ever wanted to release it, he’d want to see what he could pull from sources they have in the archives (original negative, separation masters, etc.)
I really don’t see any reason they wouldn’t want to release Mike’s project. If we are to assume that an OOT release is on the agenda for them, it would surely just save them a lot of time and money and be better than whatever half-assed crap they’d put out themselves.

But nothing like this has ever been attempted before and its not like Legacy is just some amateur scan of a release print. We are talking about a serious restoration here. Yes, with original elements I’m sure a proper restoration could achieve slightly better results, but with Disney’s track record that is not exactly a guarantee.
I imagine the biggest hurdle for Mike is simply getting in touch with the right person that would actually take the time to look at his work and who also has the influence within the company to make something happen.

Which takes us back to the old question of who really calls the shots on these things, Lucasfilm or Disney?
Where were you in '77?
I know, I just don’t think that they see it as something they need. There’s a lot of consideration beyond time and money, which is negligible to Disney. They consider how professional it looks for them to accept, which let’s be honest it would look very unprofessional; they would probably want to restore the original negative also, so they might as well release that restoration instead. I’m just trying to think from their perspective and I just doubt it’ll happen. If this rumor is true (I think it is), I doubt that it has to do with Mike Verta.
The Person in Question
Money is not negligible to Disney.

For something like this, I bet Lucasfilm. I guarantee Disney approves everything regarding the movies, because that’s where the real money is. Lucasfilm probably has some freedom with stuff like this and more minor media like the cartoons.

Money is not negligible to Disney.
In those quantities it is about as important of a consideration as preserving the original negative and considering their professional image. My point is that I doubt that Lucasfilm/Disney would care to take someone else’s restoration when they are perfectly capable of doing it themselves, and might have done so already.
The Person in Question
I would certainly applaud a DVD/Blu Ray release of the Droids and Ewoks cartoons in their original Saturday morning broadcast form. 😃
Where were you in '77?
Do you think this could have anything to do with Harmy’s Despecialized mini-documentary getting taken down last month? After years of existence Fox/Disney/Lucasfilm finally feels the need to suppress it, apparently out of the blue? Maybe I’m looking too deeply but perhaps that’s because they’d be competing with an official release?
