Has anyone suggested that Disney might put out a regular Blu-ray (of either the OUT or a new master of the SE) this year and then a UHD release after 2020? They’d be able to cash in on the anniversary and have something exclusive for when Fox’s distribution deal runs out. Plus the ST will be complete by then, so it could be box set city.

That’s been a big theory of mine as well.

The timing is certainly right. They could get away with it being a 1080p-only release this year, for the 40th. Next year, not so much. But I would still hope the unaltered trilogy eventually makes it to the 4k disc format as well.

That’s the thing. . . . Disney is so late on UHD, no titles yet, including two new-release Star Wars flicks, at a time when Fox is putting B quality action/sci fi and even cheesy romantic comedies out on the format. To not have an anniversary edition of the world’s most popular movie franchise out on the latest and greatest format–especially when, as Bill Hunt notes, the floodgates have opened (bunch of old catalog titles announced this week). I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney made their debut here–and it makes sense for Fox too, could be a real format seller and great last dance for them with Star Wars. TFA and RO on the format in the lead up to TLJ is likely too, I would say.
