Not sure if this has been covered before, so please forgive me if it has.

I used to collect back in the mid-late 80's and early 90's. Mostly Batman, Transformers, Detective Comics, etc; Never read Marvel back then because I thought Marvel was for losers (my opinion on this has changed radically). I remember walking down to my local convenience store and picking up a copy of Batman #400, with an introduction by Stephen King. That was my prize until my brother got me a copy of Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, at which point, to quote Mr. Miller, "I fell in". Some of my favorite memories were taking rides with my dad to the next city over to the comic shops there (there were none in my hometown). As I advanced through high school I began to stop collecting, and made maybe one or two stops at the local comic shop through the entire decade. Around 2001 I stopped at one down the street from where I worked at the time and fell back in again. I take my kids with me when I go. Now my tastes know no bounds, and I'm dying to catch up on things I missed. For example, I just read the first issue of Neil Gaiman's Sandman (the collected first volume), and am thirsty for the entire series.

I'm just wondering what your favorite current title(s) is/are?
What was your favorite in the past?
Who is your favorite author?
Favorite artist?

My answers in order:

1. Anything by J. Michael Straczynski
2. The Marvel Transformers series (this was my lone exception)
3. Miller, baby.
4. I'd have to say the person who does Straczynski's Amazing Spiderman book, I think it's Romita, not sure.

Reminder: Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7th. Take a friend!!

been a comic fan almost my whole life. my first experience with comics was finding spider man number 1 at my grandma's house! I remember that I wasn't at reading age at the time, but I instantly fell in love with the visuals. I also developed a strong respect for it at that early age. Been reading ever since. Kinda on an on again off again pace though. Two of my best friends are comic writers and artists. You might have heard of them, Matt and Mike Cossin. They've done pencil and color work for G.I. Joe and some other books. They are working on some really cool stuff right now!

To answer your questions:
anything Spiderman
I've loved spidey and dark knight returns was really great back in the day. daredevil was pretty good
Brian Micheal Bendis and Miller before he went nuts with DKII
Mark Bagley

And I have read 300... It was good visually, but I've seen the story before.

Can't say I've heard of your friends (sorry), but sounds like they're pretty good.

I think comics is a very under-rated medium. There are lots of very adult stories, well done, well paced, etc;

Has any of you read the graphic novel "Maus", volumes 1 and 2? I think everyone should read it...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I've read through part of volume one but never read the rest of it. I got busy and I think I lost it. Will have to read it soon. My buddies are slowly on the rise in the industry, but Matt wants to get into film. He wants me to sorta advise his first project.

Do we want this thread to double as the Comic Movie thread as well? The old one disappeared and I just wanted to post this from IMDb...

Grammer To Play Blue Beast in 'X-Men 3'
Fans of Kelsey Grammer are set to find him tough to recognize in his next project - he's playing a furry blue monster in the second X-Men sequel. In X-Men 3, the former Frasier star will play oversized mutant Beast, who has not yet appeared in any of the franchise's installments. While there has been a shocked reaction to Grammer's casting, producers of the movie insist he's the perfect choice for the part - because Beast is the most intelligent of all the mutants. Snatch star Vinnie Jones is also set to undergo a huge image overhaul when he plays villainous Juggernaut in the movie. His character is a 900 pound metal-clad battering ram. The sci-fi series stars Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn. The movie, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn, is set to debut in May next year.

Interesting casting choice, no?

Bossk: I read this yesterday. Definitely an interesting choice. I'll be interested to see if Grammer can succeed in anything besides Frasier. He's such a talented actor it's hard to believe he can't make something else work.

Fine by me with the movies thread.

Look for Sin City on DVD in August, and there's also talk of Rodriguez doing two sequels, which is good news, in my book.

I'd like to see Gaiman's Sandman go to film, or even an anthology tv series based on the comics. Think that would be cool. I'm just finishing up Volume 2: The Doll's House. Hopefully the quality will remain as good as it is now.

I've heard that WB is going to get the Batman and Superman franchises back on their feet, then do the vaunted Batman vs Superman movie. I wish they'd adapt Dark Knight returns.

His talent is definitely not in question. He's got it in spades. But can we, the public, break our typecast image of him as Frasier Crane? 20+ years of playing the same character can do that to a person's career.

That's a really good point. J. M. Straczynski had an interesting take on that when he cast Walter Koening as Bester on B5 and fans were saying it would be Checkov on a space station. He basically said that the only thing people who get typecast do "wrong" is create a character that people will remember forever. Like Robert Deniro and Al Pacino. They always play gangster types or cops. I'm still seeing Pacino as Scarface on t-shirts and art prints now...all over the place.

I've got a subway sized poster of Pacino as Scarface in my office.

I enjoyed his work on Fraiser, but *I* more fondly remember him as Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge in the movie 'Down Periscope'. Hill-air-ee-ous, IMHO!

And yes, I think he'll be a fine Beast, as anyone familiar with the comic would know that many of Grammer's characters are similar to the 'ever-lovin' Beast.

I'm just curious to see what he's gonna look like in blue makeup. I'm also wondering when they will introduce a new mutant that's not blue. Beast, Nightcrawler, Mystique. They're segregating against other colored mutants. At this rate, the next movie will be titled "X3: Race Wars."

Dark horse comics is the current best comic company, in my humble opinion. Dave Dorman is an awesome artist. But my favorite artists writers are:

Al Williamson

Archie Goodwin

Alex Raymond

Hal Foster

Jack Kirby

Frank Frazetta

Al Williamson's star wars stuff is great, and so is his flash gordon e.c. stuff. He in my mind is the direct descendant of Raymond, and is my second favorite artist. Alex Raymond has to be the immortal of comics history.

Hm. I just got finished reading Crisis on Infinite Earths and the Teen Titans "Family Lost" arc and I reccomend them both, especially Crisis.
