I tend to watch the SE sometimes — Page 2

I only got despecialized this summer and watched it once. Yet, I could never justify going back to the official bd. Despecialized has all the noticeable AV quality of the BD, but none of the shit.

I like a few of the cosmetic changes, like some of the Yavin and X-wing shots in Star Wars, some of the space shots in Return of the Jedi, and the new Death Star explosions. Some of the CGI work on Bespin was also an improvement, although I loathe the shots after Lando announces the evacuation of the city.

Like some of the other posters in this thread, I’m pretty much only an OT Star Wars fan. I’m not that way for the sake of it though, as I keep hoping that each new Star Wars movie will be a good one. But so far, I’ve always been disappointed.

It’s kind of refreshing to watch the SE now and again. I do that every once in a while.

I do this as well. I watch it as a stand alone set that I consider separate from the OT. Besides, watching different Laserdisc versions of Star Wars movies is pretty fun when you own the equipment to do so.

On occasion I don’t mind watching the 1997 - 2011 various special editions of ANH and ESB.
On occasion I don’t mind watching the 1997 - 2004 various special editions of ROTJ.
But watching the 2011 special edition of ROTJ is like smashing my head against a wall for two hours. I guess the audio mix on the disc is nice though.

“I hate the ROTJ SE.”

“Han Solo shooting first or Jabba and Boba Fett existing at all in ANH SE doesn’t bother me.”

Ok.

The last time I watched the special editions was when I saw them in the theater in 1997 (and I even have the 2006 DVD set with the GOUT bonus discs, but I never bothered to watch the new special edition DVDs that they came with; although I have seen a few scenes online, “Hayden’s ghost”, etc.).

I’ve never felt any motivation to rewatch bastardized versions of Star Wars when I can just watch…Star Wars…the real thing…

I watch both. But I’ll have to admit, now that I’m older I get more nostalgic for the originals, and tend to put them on more. My kids are teens, and love the movies, and I like showing the originals so they can get a feel for what I saw as a kid. I guess to me it’s like me spinning up my vinyl copy of a Steely Dan record, or one of my other classic favorite bands, vs listening to them via Mp3 or CD 😃 I Love the silver screen edition, since its gritty and nostalgic, but Harmy is amazing as well. I’d love to be able to burn a nice fan edit with the nice menus. I saw one on here that looked incredible. If I’m able to get on myspleen someday, I’d definitely look at burning a nice copy of that along with printing a nice custom cover to leave out for me and the kiddos to watch. Best of both worlds.

I sometimes check one or two scenes to see what they looked like but even the basic colours are awful and over saturated. Morbid curiosity only.

The one thing that seems to fit more to me (I guess after years of only having the SE discs) is that like Han saying “it’s alright I can see a lot better”. Maybe this was in older versions from the VHS era? The other changes like Luke’s “you were lucky to get outta there” is just annoying.

Ok.

If you’re replying to me I literally never once said I was okay with either of those things, but yes, they bother me less than the changes to ROTJ.

You sometimes watch ANH SE but ROTJ SE is an abomination. Your opinion is once again duly noted.

I sometimes watch the SE’s too. Except for Jedi, which I consider to be entirely unwatchable (both in the sense of changes and the horrid 2004 master).

I frequently whip out my Star Wars and Empire LD and give them a watch, and will occasionally watch the Empire BD. The Empire BD is the only one of the 3 that is remotely watchable, due to it having the least grandiose changes and the least shitty master. I don’t watch the 2004 versions ever. There is absolutely no reason to.

Why?

For the heck of it. I watched Empire out of curiosity and found it surprisingly watchable. The Laserdiscs and look great (for Laserdisc) and sound absolutely incredible. I also find them interesting from both an historical and technological standpoint.

So you’re willing to resort to laserdisc and still watch the SE sometimes, even on laserdisc? That’s gotta be a jailable offence 😛

Don’t knock it till you try it!

I’ve seen the SE, I don’t see how watching it in lower quality would make me like it better. If you’re into laserdisc that’s fine, but seeing as there are plenty of high quality (for laserdisc anyway) OOT releases to choose from I can’t see watching a laserdisc and still going for the SE.

At least Irvin Kershner gave his blessing for the SE of Empire.

I also find the SE historically significant in its own way. A movie series of such popularity has never been so radically altered before or since. ANH SE long held the record (if it doesn’t still) for the highest-grossing January release in U.S. box office history.

I also have the Faces discs, and plan to pick up TPM. I want to own each version in the highest official quality, and the Laserdiscs of the 97 represent just that. They also sound really, really good.

I will admit that the 97 se does sound really good… But honestly the 93 (and by extension 95 as it’s the same) mix is even better. Don’t let the lack of discrete channels fool you, turn on your pro logic and you’ll have in my opinion the best sound star wars has ever had, including the blu rays.

I just have a soundbar, so I can’t really take advantage of either discrete channels or Pro Logic. The standard Dolby Surround track on the 97 sounds better than that on the 95 discs.
