I think it is as close as I hope to ever see so I’m going to base my next BR regrade on it.

No intentions to hijack this thread, but I matched a picture of Tarkin from the Tech samples posted earlier and applied the LUT to the Blu-ray. I’m not sure how accurate these colors are, being that the Blu-ray varies, but I was amazed at how natural they looked. I’m sure a few more passes could do the trick.

It looks so natural!!! It has the colours of a film from the 70s.

For example, here’s Tarkin in the conference room:

Edit: Just to make it clear, I’m not saying it should look exactly like this since I don’t think any of the scans have been color corrected at all. But it gives you good idea as the colors for SW are still great compared to TESB and ROTJ scans.

Well, this is my 2015ReGrade attempt (top HDTV, bottom HDTV regraded):

Holy hell, that’s an impressive regrade for being single-pass.

Thank you! My only concern with it is the highlights. They seem clipped, but I could very well be wrong. However, here’s the regrade in motion: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1-W6ByLSZVKRDBuX3pWZDhuR1U

Amazing work with the screenshots, and your video looks really good. It looks pretty natural, and well balanced.
I especially like when Chewie yells “Hey, where’s my medal?”.

I reduced the effect of the LUT in the project by 50 percent. While this variant does not have the same Technicolor look, the colors are retained and it falls more in line with the home video releases - and the white are no longer clipping! I also added additional green values in the highlights.

I realize this issue has largely been put to bed and I’m not trying to start any new arguments about it - I think we’ve all agreed that the shot is supposed to be at least a little green, but I was flicking through my UK souvenir program of Star Wars and spotted this, so I scanned it in:

Obviously not a reliable color reference for many reasons, but interesting because I’ve never seen the Leia and R2 shot look so green anywhere else.

Especially with the characters themselves appearing so neutral (vibrant, even) compared to the very green walls.

I brought it into photoshop, adjusted the green levels and the saturation, and I got something that is much closer to the Technicolor frames. You can tell it is off because Darth Vader looks green instead of gray/black.

I’ve done a shot by shot correction of the tantive’s scene of silver screen edition, sadly i’ve now only a 2 Gb version but i think to have done a good job as the colors seems quite consistent 😃

Took that LUT and applied to the ANH Blu-ray in Resolve, that is a most impressive improvement!

A helpful new starting point for the new project I’m working on…

I further tweaked the color settings with the aforementioned LUT, and am very happy with the results. I understand these aren’t true theatrical colors, but it certainly derives from it. To keep from hijacking this thread, I’ll create my own thread if there’s enough demand to see this applied to the other two films.

This just further cements the fact that LFL could have fixed every conceivable color issue for the Blu-ray, using the same master, on a budget of zero dollars and zero cents.

Exactly, even one simple pass could’ve brought the films back to a much better state. Simply inexcusable.

I really don’t mind the idea of a ‘modernized’ look for the OT. The grading above is a happy marriage of old and new for me.

Indeed! It looks good.
