What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like? — Page 19

I guess it’s a pointless enough change that it would fit perfectly in the SE. Though this line of thought opens up a can of worms. Might as well ask why Lucas didn’t do any number of other random changes though. Why didn’t he give Luke a sombrero? We could do this all day.

Random shower thought:

Why didn’t GL change Obi-Wan’s line…

“You can’t win, Darth…” to “You can’t win, Vader…” ?

Why would he?

When Lucas wrote that line, Darth was his name. It made sense to call him Darth. But somewhere along the line, Darth became a title. Vader was his identifier, Darth was just a prefix.

So? No one’s ever referred to someone by just a title before? You’re telling me we don’t hear people refer to others in SW as just “general” or “captain” or “count” or “master” or “princess”?

I don’t think referring to him by a title makes sense in this context, since it’s supposed to be a very personal moment for the two of them.

“Only a master of evil, Darth.” Seems a perfectly fitting place to use his title, personal moment or not.

Anyway, if Lucas was going to change it to make it more “personal,” why would he change it to Anakin?

I think if Ben put more emphasis on the Darth, said it in an vaguely spiteful tone, I’d be fine with it. Almost as if to point out that he’s just another Sith Lord, his own identity has been stripped away from him. He just says Darth very casually, IMO, as if Darth were a first name. I think either Vader or Anakin would’ve worked too.

He never changed that…

You’re crazy.

You were right about the 1993 mixes that you mentioned in another thread though. Damn, they do sound good. Much better than the blu rays.

I deserve this - but it’s mostly relative to the other changes in JEDI. I’d rather have Vader scream “Noooo!” throughout the entirety of the film than ever hear Jedi Rocks ever again…

It’s not annoying (to me at least), adds some more drama to the scene (albiet schlocky drama), and I was never a fan of Vader’s silent redemption. Please have mercy on me - I just want to watch movies maaaaan.

Now, Luke’s scream in EMPIRE, there is absolutely no defense for liking that change…

Objectively, yes - it’s not great. But subjectively, it’s all preference, no matter how flawed.

Then there’s no reason to say this:

Sure, there’s no valid defense, but if someone likes it - then let them like it. You would be right had I said “There is absolutely no reason for liking that change”.

I don’t like any of them, I am on the side of remastering the history no matter how ugly it gets. It all took time and effort. This other stuff… it’s all junk, purely junk. The hilarious part is there are still continuity errors and things like R2 shots being recycled they could have got away with fixing. Instead of logical things it’s just nonsensical madness. Some things seem to have a logic yet others don’t. Like minor things are screwed with but the sabres have never been repainted. Why change once Bespin window but not the next? And then there are pink blades that change colour shot to shot… good grief.

Heres a little list

The New Sandcrawler
That Aurebesh replaced English
R2’s color correction, Blue R2 not Black R2
Oolas Raincore Pit extension
Removal of the Cardboard Cutouts in ANH and replacing with actual people (BEST CHANGE)
Better Lightsaber Effects
Blast Doors
Biggs Darklighter

Now i love that we have the Despecialized Edition, But i wish we had a Harmys Special Edition with the Good things that were added/fixed.

You can make a fanedit yourself, which is what I’m doing. Not everyone will agree on which changes are good and which are bad though.

Speaking of which, I agree with most of your list, but why do you think the extended rancor scene is good? It’s repetitive, since you already get to see the same **** going on in the scene with Luke and the guard. The off-camera screams in the original were enough to cue in the audience that something bad happened to people who fall down there. It also built suspense towards what Luke was up against, when that big giant metal door slowly opens and reveals the Rancor. The SE change is a terrible editing mistake.
