What was Episode I hype like? — Page 2

Did anyone notice Lucy Liu and Shaq were in the React video? There is a howard stern react video recomended too. He was so sad that it sucked. He was under a gag order and he still reviewed it.

I remember that Howard Stern summed it up perfectly. It’d make a ton of money because people needed to see it for themselves, no matter how disappointing it was.

When I think of the hype, I actually think first of this review which was written just prior to theatrical release, but I didn’t discover until much later.

Summary:

Those of you waiting in line for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace are, in my opinion, setting yourselves up for a grave disappointment. Either that, or you’re about to brainwash yourselves into the short-term, delusional embrace of a sub-par cinematic product – which is even worse.

JEDIT: I forgot how entertaining the comments are.

You have no right to criticize the genius of George Lucus. What he does is some thing of great beauty. You are a sad, sad person and I take pity on you. You have no life seeing that you can write such filth.

Thanks bunghole.

You’re awful, angry and bitter. See you in line on the 19th! 😃

I was sorry to read your review. You have obviously lost all sense of the innocence and childhood within you. I feel sorry for people like you. Most of us are still in touch with our inner child. You are obviously not, and I pity you. I pity you. For that, and also because you’re probably one of the most hated reviewers in the world now. People like you should have their ‘opinions’ taken away before they can tell others of them. God I hate critics. All you do is try to spoil others’ fun. Well good luck to you – I’m just sorry for you that you’ll never know a level of being and enjoyment that most of us do.

May the Force be without you.

That sums up the people who saw it ten more times and came up with a pointless theory on why the movie is secretly good before realizing that it was actually just really boring.

Do you remember it?

One of the earliest I remember was Flash Gordon in 1980. I was 6.

Sort of. I remember loving it because I was a dumb 6 year old.

I didn’t realize the rabid attack fanboys were out there that early.

I was in middle school. I remember there being tons of hype for it and it was the most excited I had ever been for a movie. After seeing it with my friends we all convinced ourselves it was still a good movie even though it maybe wasn’t a great Star Wars movie and that the Star Wars name had our expectations way up and it would have been impossible for it to fully deliver on all of the hype. We all agreed it wasn’t quite what we pictured it would be like and that some elements of it like Jar-Jar, little kid Anakin, and maybe the battle droids were kind of lame. We also believed that since it was just the first one of the new trilogy that it was just setting the stage for the next two which would surely be great Star Wars movies.

There’s a great comment where someone says that Darth Sidious is obviously not the Emperor from Empire and Jedi and the author needs to get his facts right because Palpatine was the Emperor’s name, not Sidious.

I remember streaming the teaser trailer on my parent’s computer, taping one of the trailer premieres off of some entertainment news show and rewatching it over and over again, reading a primitive trailer breakdown that figured that Qui-Gon was going to die which I should not have highlighted to read, standing in line in the mall parking garage to end up getting tickets to a showing the day after, my stepdad and I listening to a review on the radio that started with Anakin saying “everything’s overheated”, easily collecting the fast food toys because my dad worked at Pizza Hut and my stepmom at Taco Bell, and having the timecodes memorized on my dad’s training VHS that explained what the hype was about by showing both trailers (which I still have and would be fun to have digitized).

I don’t remember actually seeing the movie, except for being excited to see a new Star Wars movie for the first time in my life and dreading the end knowing that Qui-Gon was going to die. I remember seeing it 4 more times (including once by myself when my grandparents wanted to go to the movies and NOT see that and winning a Jar Jar doll from a crane game) in some kind of misguided attempt to have a Star Wars movie at the top of the All Time Box Office list to beat Titanic.

“Her facts.”

Just saying.

It’s interesting how a lot of fans tended to blame themselves at first for the movie being unenjoyable.

Are any of the commercials on that tape? There do not seem to be any decent quality versions on youtube. Those ads with Col. Sanders, the Taco Bell dog, and a Pizza Hut delivery gal were a lot of fun.

I don’t think so. I don’t remember any of it being entertaining besides the trailers, but I only watched the rest of it once 18 years ago.

Man I rememeber watching the downloaded trailer on my bestfriend’s blue G3 Powermac who had highspeed cable internet (man that shit was like lightening after dealing with dial up previously).

We were so fucking hyped. We were like 15 and 16 and big StarWars fans so we couldn’t believe this was happening.

I managed to procure the single of Dual of the Fates and listened to it on repeat. I read all the magazines I could on the production. This film could do no wrong.

Now I was living in France at this time and it didn’t come out until October which was excruciating. When we began to hear reports Stateside that the film was not good, we totally blew them off. They did not “understand” Star Wars.

I finally saw it on a matinee showing on opening day and my initial reaction was one of excitement. “This movie is so awesome!”

I later went to rewatch it a couple weeks later, but I remember feeling bored and wishing I had gone to see something else.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

The Hype of Episode 1 was through the roof. I remember seeing articles on all the newspapers, magazine covers, detailed Skywalker family tree diagrams. Obviously the Toys and every type of merchandise imaginable. The Hasbro action figures, the device that plays an audio clip when you put the characters on it.
I went to the movie theater with my dad, and we enjoyed it. I liked it a lot more back in 1999, than I do now.

I remember the hype well, it was crazy for a while. I remember there being lots going on in the mainstream media and there wasn’t a week that went by in the few months leading up to release when there wasn’t a picture of Obi Wan, Darth Maul etc in newspapers, magazines etc.

It was a great time to be a SW fan actually. I know the prequels aren’t viewed in high regards these days but before its release it felt like the best thing ever.

The “dark times” (excluding novels, games etc) felt like forever so I think everyone was happy to jump on the hype train and enjoy the ride.
