This is kind of a random thought, but it’s political so I think it is best left in this thread. I’ve found a Youtube internet commentator that is about a million times worse than Alex Jones and he’s that Stefan Molyneux guy.

Care to elaborate?

There’s an element of silliness to Alex Jones that Molyneux doesn’t have, and it really just makes him disturbing. One problem I have with him is that his videos are so long that they’re completely unwatchable given his repetitive style of philosophizing, and there are also a lot of disturbing tirades of his online that he presumably didn’t want to have recorded where he rants and raves about how women are the cause of all ill in the world and they need to be held accountable for marrying or procreating with men that he considers to be “assholes”. He also has recommended that his followers (some of which have a cult-like devotion to him) end relationships with friends and family that are not also as libertarian as he is.

There’s an element of silliness to Alex Jones that Molyneux doesn’t have

Which makes Alex Jones more dangerous.

I just found that arguing politics on Twitter is even more frustrating than it is here!

I’m not so sure. Nobody really takes Alex seriously, almost everybody recognizes that he’s a nut and his ideas are crazy. Molyneux has a following.

I doubt it was ever intended to be used the way some people are using it now. If twitter ever suffers a major outage, certain folks are going to be curled up on the floor shaking when they can’t broadcast their brain farts every few minutes.

I was calling out my Congressman for being part of this “let’s make rules so we don’t have to follow the rules” confirmation hearings, this random follower says that maybe he’s representing the half of the country that voted for Trump. I pointed out that it was actually less than half, as another friend pointed out that it was less than a quarter of the population, and it just went on from there.

Alex Jones doesn’t have the same cult-like devotion that Molyneux’s followers have, and his ideas may be technically sillier, but they are not nearly as despicable as Stefan Molyneux.

But if I was surrounded by a country that distrusted me and looked at me sideways at the McDonald’s or tailed me while I was shopping at the mall. Or moved to the other side of the street when I passed them. Or called me racial slurs. Or if their news was constantly calling my people terrorists, or drains on society, or unMiddle-Eastern, I might start to wonder if maybe I wasn’t welcome. Maybe over time I’d start to resent and hate them. Maybe I’d meet other American refugees with similar experiences who believed more radical things than I did and I’d start listening to them.

You should have added “or if a candidate for leadership in said country talked about banning people like you from entering the country and then that candidate won the election”

I’ve stated this before and I will state it again. Here is how I would change the electoral College:

  1. switch from electoral votes to points
  2. divide the number of electoral votes in a state by the number of people that voted in the state. Call the number X.
  3. multiple the number of votes each candidate received in the state to get the number of electoral points awarded to each candidate.

When I see something like this, I can’t help but wonder if we should just go by popular vote.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/under-a-new-system-clinton-could-have-won-the-popular-vote-by-5-points-and-still-lost/

This would be a disaster. Republicans have already stolen the White House and Congress from the majority of Americans thanks to gerrymandering and uneven political weight given to less populace states in the Senate and electoral college. This would be the death knell to any sort of opposition.

This thread is for debating politics, not arguing it, so that could be the difference.

Join us February 17, 2017 for a national general strike!
No work. No Commerce. Only Human Solidarity.

On February 17, 2017 we will be staging a National General Strike. The idea is 24-hour occupation of public space in protest of the Trump administration’s refusal to Honor the Constitution of the United States of America.

How To Participate
We recognize that it is not feasible for all citizens to participate in the same ways. Because we understand this, we are developing several strategies to help people engage in the movement as they are able; all levels of participation are important.

This is a NON-Violent movement. We take as our prime directive to model the positivity and belief in democracy that we find utterly lacking in the current administration. We will serve as an example of what an organized, dedicated, focused Democracy looks like!

We encourage all who are able to demonstrate their resistance in any of the following ways.

Do not purchase anything. Do not work (if possible). Post your support on social media.
Join with other like-minded folks and occupy public space with positive messages of resistance and solidarity on our on our events page.
Participate in the National Day of Community Service to coincide with the General Strike on February 17. We hope this will allow folks who cannot ‘strike’ to take advantage of their employer’s commitment to Community Service and Community Service Leave request systems. We will announce more details and how to participate once we have confirmed commitment from institutions with whom we are currently negotiating.
Make your feelings known at any of a series of First Amendment Open-Mic gatherings. Again, more details and participating venues to follow.
If you are a teacher or student, please consider participating in the National Teach-In on Democracy set to take place February 17. Keep your students engaged.
This is not a National Day-Off; we’ve got work to do!! Get out and get busy!!

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/317379-gop-senator-to-vote-no-on-betsy-devos

GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski in back-to-back speeches on the Senate floor announced Wednesday that they would oppose Betsy DeVos’s nomination to be Education secretary.

They are the first two Republicans to break with Trump on any of his Cabinet picks, and the votes could make it difficult for DeVos to win confirmation.

If all of the Senate’s Democrats vote against DeVos, she would have 50 votes if the remaining Republicans backed her — with Vice President Mike Pence potentially breaking the tie. No Democrats have backed DeVos.
