,^…^, presents the [OUT ruLes IT] project

Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions - ITALIAN

Audio sources: VHS HiFi stereo soundtrack for the italian soundtrack, uncompressed PCM captured directly from Laserdisc for the english soundtrack.*

  • UNA NUOVA SPERANZA (A NEW HOPE) is actually using Hairy_Hen’s 70mm reconstruction soundtrack

Subtitles sources: handmade italian literal subtitles, Project Threepio for english subtitles.

Project prohibition: use DVD, BD, HDTV or other audio or video from any digital sources.

IV EPISODIO: UNA NUOVA SPERANZA

Source Material

Video: THX PAL laserdiscs

Audio: THX PAL laserdiscs

  • Star Wars - Guerre Stellari - VHS Italian (for the italian soundtrack)
  • Hairy_Hen 70mm recreation (for the english soundtrack)

Subtitles:

  • Handmade italian literal subtitles
  • Project 3PO english literal subtitles

Captures and setup info

Hardware:

  • Pioneer CLD-D925 PAL/NTSC laserdisc player; S-Video out (composite out tested but the video card own comb filter is not better than the laserdisc player)
  • PC Sony Vaio Core 2 Duo e6300 dual core 1.86GHz, 3GB RAM, 1TB external HD only for Star Wars; video card AverMedia A16C with Philips SAA713x chipset
  • Panasonic S-VHS recorder NV-FS88B
  • Sony MiniDisc recorder MDS-J520E

Software:

  • VirtualDub as capture software
  • VirtualDub and AviSynth for video manipulation
  • Foobar2000 and other for audio manipulation

Settings:

  • video captured at video capture card native resolution 720x576, YUV, HuffYUV compression
  • digital audio from Laserdisc via S/PDIF bit-to-bit perfect 16bit 44,1KHz stereo
  • analog audio from VHS converted with the MiniDisc A/D converter 20bit Sigma-Delta modulation and then via S/PDIF perfect 16bit 44,1KHz stereo to PC

**Project Status: DONE
**

Captures: all done

Video treatment: all laserdisc video captures were time and space aligned, then with AviSynth median and average scripts were overlayed to eliminate some noise and put out unwanted video parts (as burned subtitles); VHS italian video is captured with no median or average; little noise reduction and sharpen; NO COLOR CORRECTION at all! Upconverting from PAL 720x576 4:3 to 1280x720 16:9.

Audio treatment: all digital and analog audio are Dolby Surround encoded, then converted to Dolby Digital 2.0 AC3 files.

Subtitles: all done

Conversion from 25p to 23.976p: done

Final formats: AVCHD 720p/23.976fps with italian and english soundtracks, italian and english subtitles, both forced and full.

It is available on myspleen.

SPECIAL THANKS TO:

  • Hairy_Hen for his 70mm soundtrack
  • CapableMetal for his help with the soundtracks
  • CatBus for his 3PO project’s english subtitles
  • Leonardo, that pushed me to start this project
  • all the members who help me with my projects

NOTES

Leonardo contacted me, and asked if I could do an italian version of OUT; I was thinking about it long time ago, so I decided to do it, for him and for me, my family and my friends.

The video quality is the same of OUT 2.0 (that will be released soon), except the initial part, that is taken from VHS… I used the same denoise settings for both video parts, but maybe I must apply a more aggressive noise reduction for the VHS part!

I must admit I cheated a bit, because I used the 1997 S.E. italian crawl, but it was the only choice, as the OT italian crawl was totally different…

Could you forgive me?

The only other little thing that bothers me is the fact that the forced subtitles should be manually selected; I set hardcoded subtitles with avisynth, but for some strange reason, they were not there when previewed with virtual dub, and disappeared when I watched the final release… so, as more than two days was necessary for the conversion, I decided to leave them “as is”, sorry…

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Well, I've sampled though some scenes for now, and I have to say: "Impressive. Most impressive." I didn't know laserdisc could look this good!

A few things to note:

we discussed about the audio, sounds like a bad remix. This was the THX VHS, wasn't it? Apparently THX has become a synonym of poor standards. Sounds like they took a music and effects track and mixed it with the mono italian soundtrack. Badly, because the music and effects are almost never in sync with the rest.

As a matter of fact, I was listening with headphones to the briefing scene before the battle of Yavin, and I could hear the lower end of General Dodonna's english voice bleeding though! If you pay attention, you can hear Luke and Biggs too. I think the problem is easier to spot in this scene because there are no sound effects or music to drown out the voices. I have never heard anything quite like this.

Of course, this is not a jab at you, my dear Andrea, this is just what you had to work with.

About the subtitles, maybe I did something wrong, but the only one that seemed to work was the second one, the dubbing transcript.

It's the same thing I think: in this totally High Definition and Digital world of nowadays, there is a (little) place for analog things like laserdisc... obviously it must be "helped" a bit to shine, but results are really satisfactory, at least to me... and you, it seems! Thanks!

I know, Leonardo, don't worry! But I'd like to add a note: it's not only the italian soundtrack that is that bad... we are in good company, as the french, german and spanish laserdisc soundtracks have similar problems!

If only someone could (and would) fix all those soundtracks... at the end, I could think to release an OUT 3.0! (^^,)

Don't know... I've just played the file with Media Player Classic, and all the four subtitles (english and italian, forced and full) work well, along with the two soundtracks... what software are you using to play the file?

You can't fix that. You can't "un-mix" stuff from a soundtrack. Unfortunately all those tracks are stuck like that, I'm sad to say.

Windows Media Player and VLC. On the former I can turn them on, but I can't select the track, and the first one doesn't work. On the latter I can see all the sub tracks, but as I said only the second one works.

I'm not sure about that... the italian soundtrack is (should be) Dolby Surround encoded, thus have the left, right, central and surround channels encoded into a stereo track; decoding those channels, is it possible to take only the central one and including it in the corrispondig place of, e.g., the english AC3 5.1 soundtrack; the quality will not be the same, as the best Dolby Surround ProLogic decoder has around 40db of separation, but should be sufficient to result into a better surround italian soundtrack than the original; the same could be done for the other languages... mmmhhh, you inspired me a bit...

As I'm against Windows Media Player, I couldn't tell anything about it, but in VLC it works well.. just play the file; under "Audio/Traccia Audio" you should see "Disabilita|Traccia 1 [italian]|Traccia 2 [english]"; under "Video/Traccia Sottotitoli" you should see "Apri file|Disabilita|Traccia 1 [italian]|Traccia 2 [italian]|Traccia 3 [english]|Traccia 4 [english]" - the first is italian forced, the second italian full, third english forced, fourth english full...

If it doesn't work, download Media Player Classic - it's light, and works very well!

I don't know, man, if you take the center channel out of the english 5.1 you can still hear the voices in the remaining channels.

Our Italian Star Wars Despecialized is on hold until Harmy releases a newer version. I guess there is no Italian Star Wars currently available.
