I remember when I was a kid I thought the equatorial trench was the same trench, but as I aged I saw the clear difference in size between it and the trench with the exhaust port. Of course, as pointed out before, there are the longitudinal trenches shown in the schematic. But on top of that, I read the novel, which makes several several statements that make it clear there are multiple small trenches on the Death Star surface.
