Holy balls. That's all I can say.

Oh, and I want one too. Alas, I don't think I'd ever have that kind of money. I want to know what the total cost of setting this thing up was.

Holly shit dude...

One day I'll build one of those for me... But less, uh... flamboyant.

I agree. I know old-style theaters are supposed to be... showy... but that is a little too 'Liberace' for me.

This was posted on AVS Forum a year or so ago. He's a member there I think.

About half of respondents thought it was beautiful, while the other half thought it was gaudy. I was in the latter group (though I didn't express my sentiments publicly).

I've always had a more utilitarian design sense though. I prefer a home theater to be more about the film than the room. Dark walls and furniture, no framed posters on the walls (these reflect light, taking focus away from the film and washing out the image), etc. That sky blue ceiling he has is just about the worst thing you can do in a home theater from an image quality standpoint.

To each his own.

I envy his financial strength and his means to build such a viewing environment. I hope to achieve the same someday.

When taken in the context of the total cost of this home theater system, your signature is very a propos, greencapt...

I've got a bad feeling about this...

The projector, which is the 12S2, shows how long ago this was actually built. The 12S3 and 12S4 have since been released (with a $14,995 MSRP on the 12S4).

I bet these projectors are the best money can buy... Do they provide a better image than a hi-res TV set?

I've got a Marantz reciever and let me tell you it was well worth the money!!!

however it was nowhere near the price range of the projector...
thats just insanity!

i also dont like the room personally.
too much flare and as Jay said many of the surfaces would reflect the light...
i've had to take down many frames in my basement when i watch movies sometimes... its just far too distracting!

The best digital projectors on the market are 3-chip DLPs and LCOS models. They're in the $20K to $30K range. The 12S4 is a 1-chip DLP.

Without getting into too much detail, 3-chip DLPs have a DMD chip for each of the primary colors (red/green/blue). A 1-chip DLP has one DMD and a color wheel with colored segments. The wheel spins very fast in front of the chip and fools the eye into thinking it's seeing a full-color image, when in fact it's seeing a series of red/green/blue images at a very high frequency. 1-chip DLPs are cheaper to produce, but there are image quality compromises due to the single chip design.

The technology in these projectors is the same stuff used in DLP-based projection TVs. The image quality should theoretically be the same, but a lot of it comes down to image processing, which each manufacturer implements differently. Some are definitely better than others.

There's no technical reason for a projector to cost more than a projection TV. In fact, a projector should be cheaper because it requires fewer materials and costs much less to ship from the country of origin. It's the status of front projection that keeps the prices high.

I think one could assemble such thing without being so rich. The thing is, make sure you never get married and never get kids, so you won't be bothered in "spending money on people you love", that's commie crap. Then, with a shitload of money you'll save, you can buy your home theater thingy. First, make sure you remove all the "Liberace-esque" things, such as the cute curtains and the pillars and stuff. Second, only buy ONE chair, you won't be inviting anyone anyway, it's YOUR home theater. Better yet, don't buy a chair, use the toilet seat instead. That way, if nature calls, you can just do it while watching the movie, which is a good thing, you don't want to stop the movie and then go back. Third, make sure you get your components, such as audio speaker, DVDs, high-res projector and such from, let's say... "alternative" sources, like from people who dosen't speak the same language as you, who will sell things that fell up from the back of a truck or something. Then, you gotta build the whole thing, and for that you hire some illegal aliens and pay them with "Monopoly" money, what do they know anyway... And finally, go to the local walmart and buy all those DVDs from the 5 dollar bin, so you won't spend so much money on films... Of course, you collection will be filled with titles such as "Thumbelina", "Baby Genius 2", "Rocky IV", "Emerson Lake & Palmer LIVE", and such, but who cares! It's all about the home theater anyway...

That would explain why a DLP image (on a home projector, at least the ones I've seen) appears to go monochromatic (either red, green or blue) whenever I blink.

My parents' pizza place used to have a projection TV.

It sucked by todays stadards. Still, I always wished I could hook up my Gamecube to it and play SSBM on the pig screen.
