Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray? — Page 23

The album review for The Return of the Jedi soundtrack is actually a review for the special edition lol

Sony finally lost the license and Disney records put them out as soon as they could so they could get that money. Nothing remotely pertaining to the release of the OOT here.

I mean, literally nothing factually pertains to an oot release here in this thread. Nothing but trust and hope. Rebellions aren’t the only things built on hope

The only “facts” we really have are that a 4K restoration of a version of A New Hope exists, although even that is hearsay (albeit from a very reliable source), and that the Library of Congress made a scan of their copy of the theatrical cut of Star Wars at the request of Lucasfilm.

Is it not significant which version they chose to put out? As far as I can tell, there is no © Lucasfilm version of the SE soundtrack just released.

Lucas-owned Lucasfilm never bothered to release the original soundtracks after the SE. I’d say it’s a step in the right direction given that they’re putting both versions out there for people to purchase.

I don’t think so. The ones Disney just put out are all the original soundtracks for all 6, which were all just remastered for Sony’s ultimate digital collection in 2015.

I think they’re keeping it simple for now with just the OSTs. The Special Editions are a more extensive program (and were mastered in 97 and don’t necessarily sound that great) with 2 discs each and are related to the SEs in name only, besides ROTJ. My guess is they aren’t putting those back out because they’re cooking up their own remastered expanded releases for all the films.

Notice they didn’t put out the TPM Ultimate Edition either.

Only tangentially related, but was there ever an LP/CD release that had the film version of Lapti Nek? It’s very different from the soundtrack version, and I recently stumbled across a full-length version on YouYube.

Have the interpositives that were created to be telecined to master tape for the Laserdisc/VHS releases beeb destroyed? that’d probably be the highest quality source for official remastering, right?

I doubt that they’d destroy them unless they were seriously low on space. Assuming they were made on low fade stock, they would be a decent source. I read previously that they were on an excessively grainy stock, however, which is not indicative of the films themselves. If I’m not mistaken, Kodak’s mid-80’s motion picture film was known for being way too grainy, not only causing headaches for film makes like James Cameron, but also being what the Star Wars home video IPs were made with. Despite how grainy they are, they’d still be a good source if they were to do a quick and dirty home video transfer, since all they would have to do is some clean up and throw a soundtrack on it.

Nothing has been destroyed.

Not anymore. There is no digital download of the SE soundtrack anymore on iTunes or Amazon. Only the original soundtracks are available in mp3 now. Was thinking about buying the ROTJ album when I noticed this.

EDIT: the Ultimate edition compilation has also been pulled, but that’s more likely a copyright thing as that was distributed by Sony.

They were all put out by Sony. Sony had the rights to the music until Jan 1 of this year. So everything Sony did has either been pulled or is now out of print.

Honestly I think the best thing that we can hope that the pulling of the SE soundtracks means is that Disney has plans to make their own comprehensive complete scores for all the films. I really don’t think we can read anything at all into this about their plans for the OOT, most don’t really associate the soundtracks with any particular version of the film.

I would love a remastered reissue of the 1993 CDs. Of course, something even more comprehensive would be welcome.

The 93 CDs already sound pretty good, honestly. It’s really the SEs that need a remaster, especially ROTJ (which sounds like it was recorded underwater), or something else equally or more comprehensive (as far as I know, though, the SE programs were only missing a couple cues from ROTJ and were otherwise more or less complete).

What needs a real complete release the most are the PT scores which have yet to see anything near to a complete light of day (though there are some very solid fan edits out there). TFA too, actually, especially considering that there’s was apparently a LOT of music that didn’t make it into the film.

Never listened to them. Never really been into the soundtracks before. Just want the originals on CD rom. The '93s were before my time and are now pretty spendy.

I just like that they went with the original artwork for the OOT soundtracks.

For the vinyl they did. I think in order to find out when or if the OOT will be released, I’ll get a job at Lucasfilm and quit as soon as I find out.

From Zombie’s article on the subject over at Saving Star Wars:

“The 1985 interpositive was already starting to go pink in 1993 when that release was made, the final home video telecine. By 2020, it will be pink, but salvageable, but all release prints would basically be unwatchable as-is, even Return of the Jedi’s.”

I doubt Disney will let those prints rot till then. Even if they don’t release the original version of Star Wars for the 40th Anniversary, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they haven’t cleaned up anything. I shall remain hopeful as always.
Also, the man who restored Lawrence of Arabia has claimed that pristine prints exist, however, this is nothing more than
a claim. The only thing backing it up is the fact that he restores films, so maybe he has inside knowledge of such?

Robert A. Harris has said that Star Wars won’t be a problematic film to restore. If Robert A. Harris says something about the state of a film, then he’s right. Also, Disney doesn’t let there catalogue deteriorate. That’s why things like Song of the South and the racist part of Fantasia are pristinely restored even though they won’t ever get released again.
