Three Little Pigs 1933 Preservation (Released)

Here’s the story on what changes this film has gone through over the years.

‘’ One sequence in the cartoon which showed the Big Bad Wolf dressed as a Jewish peddler was excised from the film after its release when _] and was re-animated so the Wolf would be a Fuller Brush Man, albeit one with a Yiddish accent. A nose, glasses and beard disguise also remained. Airings on American television have edited this further by using the Fuller Brush Man footage and redubbing the Wolf’s voice so that he does not sound stereotypically Jewish. When the film was released on home video, the scene was further edited: the topical ‘Fuller Brush Man’ line “I’m the Fuller Brush Man…I’m giving a free sample!” was changed to the incongruous “I’m the Fuller Brush Man - I’m working my way through college” for this and all subsequent home video releases.’’

I have the Itunes USA release with the Jewish peddler animation and the redubbed dialogue. I simply need some to dub the original audio back into the film. Granted it might need to be cleaned up abit.

Where would i get the original audio which has never been released on home video?

This CD has the original 1933 soundtrack!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/With-Smile-And-Song-Cartoon/dp/B00004RCAQ

I can provide the film and the audio track, i just need someone who can dub to provide their skills to the project.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

I've looked into this several times in the past. It seems one should look for a copy of the cartoon without the revised audio. I'm thinking maybe a copy could have made it to a european country with the habit of subtitling english movies rather than dubbing them, say like the Nederlands. In that case the audio track would be intact, but you'd have to look through hundreds of 8mm collectors.

If I understand correctly, what you're proposing is for somebody here to dub the line back in, that is, to re-record it from scratch? That wouldn't be the original though. Also, even if you find someone that can approximate a decent Billy Bletcher impression while doing a stereotypical jewish accent... let's be honest some would find that.... eehhhhhhh.

No i actually have the original dialogue that i obtained from the CD i posted an Amazon link of. I simply need someone to dub it back into the  film.

If you are not in a huge hurry, I could assist you with this audio editing while I'm working on the Winnie the Pooh preservation. If you have good sources (even if they are just "so, so" I can use DC Diamond Cut Forensics8 Audio Laboratory to clean them up) and then re-sync it to the video.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought that disc was music-only.

Well, then, it's simple audio editing, it'll be a cinch!

Is there a lot of hiss/scratches? I'd love to give it a try, and to finally hear that line the way it was.

Good thing the original soundtrack is actually available, even if you have to hunt for it.

jade88: Very interesting that you have gotten hold of the original line from Three Little Pigs. The film with uncensored original video has been released on DVD in Europe, but unfortunately the audio is still the 1940's censored version ("I'm working my way through college").

If you haven't already received help, I'd be happy to sync in the missing line to the original video of the film. It wouldn't take more than a few minutes.

@ hofverberg - I offered help on this one too and jade88 sent me the source video and told me that still waiting on the audio. This was a week ago and I haven't heard anything back yet. And yes, you're right, syncing the audio on this will only take a few minutes (unless the audio has to be cleaned first, then it'll take 15 minutes) However, I'm wondering if you have that DVD source of the Three Little Pigs, as the video jade88 sent me is a 640x480 100MB m4v file with a video bitrate at only 1480kbps

If we can get a better video source and if jade88 manages to get me that audio, we could have a "proper" preservation of this awesome cartoon short.

Peace ;)

Yes, I do have the European DVD source of Three Little Pigs, which is in PAL (25 fps) with the original video uncensored but the audio from the 1940's re-release. The audio and video appear to have been somewhat cleaned and restored, so in that case it's only a matter of replacing that one line (less than 10 seconds) with the original one.

The DVD in question is the European release of the Walt Disney Treasures box set Silly Symphonies, where the US release had the censored video but the European releases have the original video intact. I'm still not sure whether this was deliberate or a mistake for the European versions, as the Leonard Maltin introduction still described the original video version (the same intro as the US one).

The DVD has an average bitrate of 4773 kbit/sec for this short, and it is in PAL (of course in MPEG-2). The video is flagged as interlaced, but is as far as I can make out in reality progressive. I'd be happy to send the DVD VOB file to you, and I do hope jade88 can provide the audio soon.

I have sent the audio to jerryshadoe.

Thanks for providing the UK DVD transfer of the film hofverberg!

You're welcome, but it was actually the Scandinavian DVD; not UK. However, I assume they are identical apart from subtitles, as the Scandinavian DVD wasn't dubbed.

well, I got the audio and, long story short, it was horrible quality but I was able to fix it (to the extent that it could be done, as I have been doing audio restoration for a long time, [and those of you that have any experience with audio know this too] your end result is only as good as the source, so if certain audio is literally missing you can't create something out of nothing, but certain tricks can be played). the audio was EXTREMELY muffled, completely lacked fidelity, and was noisy as hell. I was able to restore some of the fidelity, completely fixed (and brought out a clean, well as clean as possible, vocal), and cleaned some of the noise (I had to find a "happy" medium between how "clean" the vocals were and the level of noise, where I tried to match it to the level of noise that is present on the audio of the actual DVD release) then I mixed it into the DVD audio and the final result is really nice. the transition is very slightly noticeable (as the audio sources are different and there is only so much you can do) but not distracting and now the lips stay in sync with the audio. overall, I would give the audio an 8.5 in comparison to the DVD audio, which isn't all that great either. This still is NOT the long story, LOL ;)

Anyway, as typical with many Disney PAL releases, the conversion was done incorrectly and the video actually has an NTSC duration, and this made it easy to sync the audio because I didn't have to do any speed adjustments :)

I have sent a more detailed PM to jade88 and am now waiting on response of what to do with finalized file, as this was her idea and I don't want to post someone's project, even if I helped with it... so now we wait ;)

Thanks to answer

No. The myspleen mods probably took it down. They don’t allow just about anything Disney on there for fear of the mouse bringing the wrath of their lawyers down upon them.

Hey guys!

I got a ton going on in my life and just noticed all of this in the thread.

So…

@Class316 - Please read the PM I sent you😉

@monks19 - I believe you are a member over on fanres, please PM me there and I will help you a lot faster than I would here😉

@Darth Lucas - You are correct that this release is not available over on the spleen anymore, however it was NOT removed by ANY of the mods there. I removed it a few months back, because I felt that since it had been there for about 18 months and was “technically” violating the rules, that out of respect for the mods I should remove it myself. Although, it probably would have happened around now anyway, because the “whip” is being cracked over there again over the rules and things are being removed.

I am still looking for this. Anyone? Looking for the original that was generated via the European short and original audio. It’s not on myspleen (that I could find)
