Hey, anybody remember this vinyl album?

This album came out at the time of the film release. I bought it back in ’82 and it has been in my collection ever since. Inside the album, in addition to the record, is a booklet with color stills from the movie.

Among the photos are some stills that were taken from a print of the movie. I’ve made a scan of these photos and I’m presenting them here for examination of the print’s color timing

I loved that record and still have it. Those are frame blowups and I did refer to them, but once again, photos in publications are not very reliable. Most of the shots you posted have way too much red, does it actually look like that or is it the scan? Marion looks like she has a bad sunburn lol. I’ll check my own copy when I get home.

There’s been a little delay, due to the new 4K77 Star Wars project, but there should be a video sample up soon.

After a Star Wars 35mm print, and a holiday got in the way, we’re finally back in business. Updates to follow soon…

Will this be a BD25 or BD50?

The current plan is to do the initial release as a 30-40 GB mkv, so a bluray version will be BD50.

Guess you’re using H264 and not H265 which is the vastly better codec including halving the filesize. I’d rather wait for the BD anyway.

Commercially perhaps, but the free x265 codec is immature and inefficient.
Hi10P x264 is superior but has low hardware compatibility which rules that out as useful too.

H265 is better at reducing file size, but H264 is overall considered a better codec for maintaining image quality.

Juggling different projects sadly implies things are moving more slowly than I would like, but progress is being made. It is an endeavour that will take many months though, as each shot is regraded individually.

You know, I see the same issue with this one as Star Wars. The contrast is all wrong in the Blu-ray. The darks and lights need to be compressed and the midtones expanded. It creates oversaturated skintones and too bright shadows.

Any news ??? still waiting for your release

I’m sort of trying to figure out where to go with this, as I’ve noted that transformations from one color space to another can sometimes lead to undesired color casts.

Sadly, no. I lost a lot of material when one of my drives gave out, and I’m just not at all happy with the current reference. Before I assumed just reproducing the colors of a print would yield a desirable outcome, but now I no longer believe that to be the case. These old prints suffer from loads of color inconsistencies and balance problems, while the translation of the print colors from the big screen to the small screen of a scan is a less than perfect process itself, and so regrading the HDTV broadcast requires a lot more work than simply reproducing the print colors. Add to this the fact that I’m about to have my first child, and so I don’t expect much to happen on this front for a while at least.
