Minority Report [spoRv] (Released) — Page 2

Andrea, why not use the USA release Blu-ray for Minority Report? The entire film is on its own disc which is a BD50. I'd use that as a source to work from.

The european BD - the one I'm using - is a BD-50 as well... plus, IIRC, the US BD had a minor problem, something like thin line(s) near the borders, while the EU BD has not.

Yes but the entire film is on its own BD50 instead of sharing it with the extra features. Of course leaving in the grain structure while going more for the cinematic presentation look? English DTS-HD MA 5.1 track left in? How about an isolated score track? OR would that be something Team Blu would do instead?

This would make a great third disc for the USA Blu-ray disc release I own for this film.

You are right; the EU BD has lower bitrate in comparison to the US BD, but, again, IIRC, differences are so tiny that maybe could be spotted only using a video projector with a big screen, sitting very close... (^^,)

There are a lot of grain in the EU BD, too - I mean, the "good" grain. English DTS-HD MA will be left "as is". I have not the isolated score, but if someone could provide it, I'll be more than happy to add it, too.

About the extras: I should study and see if the EU BD and EU DVD have the same extras or not; maybe I could always do another BD filled with extras, if there will be enough interest in it...

No extras are needed with this, maybe some trailers, since I'll just use it as a third disc with my USA 2-Disc Blu-ray release I own. Great you're keeping the film grain Andrea, hate it when preservationists and fan editors remove it with DVNR and EE. Will you be ripping the English DTS-MA 5.1 bit-for-bit or what? Just throw in a ton of subtitles if need be.

Obviously the current Blu-ray is great except for the needed color correction which you're doing. Keeping it AVC will be perfect.

The only thing I will do with the video is color regrading: no DVNR, EE or something else. AVC will be used, DTS-HD MA will be copied "as is", and left untouched; I'll use the usual five languages for the soundtracks, with related subtitles; if JetrellFo will be able to find out the Cinema DTS track, I'll use it too.

You wrote about isolated score: is this available somewhere?

You'd cheat and use the OST CD for the isolated score though.

...but I have too many projects in progress, and I'm a bit lazy to put it in sync... (^^,)

Maybe one of our fellow members here could step in and do the job... anyone?

After a long time, I decided to work again on this project; now that the color matching is refined, result is even better; still, don’t know if it’s just good or great 😄

So, take three and half minutes of your time to watch the test clip, and let me know:

Thanks!

Added a direct comparison video between untouched and regraded BD: https://vimeo.com/200184533 - have fun, and post your feedbacks!

Looks great! Glad to see you’re working on this again. 😃

One thing did catch my eye, though. The black levels on the regrade didn’t seem to be quite as deep as those in the untouched video. Could that just be related to the compression necessary for streaming?

It could be it, or just the fact I tried to match not only colors, but also brightness and contrast (as much as possible); to check if it’s the former, just download the video, if it’s the same, then the black level is the one found in the DVD. I could always use the BD luma along the regraded chroma, but then colors will be affected, too… I’d like to stay true as much as possible to DVD.

Final lossless encoding is ended; later, I’ll check a lossy encoded test version to detect eventual problems.

It also appears that the DVD retains the film grain while the Blu-ray has used DNR, especially in that close-up of Colin Farell smiling.

It can seem so; but it’s just due to the fact DVD is upscaled (with its grain, of course); the comparison, at the contrary, is downscaled, so BD grain (that is fine) is not noticeable; but I can assure you it’s there… the BD image is very detailed and crisp, with the right amount of grain.

Forgot to post here, too, but I found that few problematic shots were not that close to the DVD; a second pass (regrade the regraded, with a different filter) solved the problem; even if the majority of the scenes were almost perfect, I decided to re-encode the whole film, instead of replacing just those shots; at the end, result is way better for those shots, and a bit closer for the others; I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to do better, unless one would regrade (or correct the automatic regrade) the whole movie scene by scene, shot by shot… and it will NOT happen! 😄

Here you are some examples from those shots: from top to bottom, DVD, new regrade, old regrade, BD

The grass… in this shot, the almost burnt-by-the-sun grass color is not rendered well; still, the new regrade is a bit closer; house, sky, sea, trees colors are good, though.

With this, the new grading is way better than the old one; face color is right now, and the wall is green and much closer to the DVD.

Even if it seems minor here, the difference is noticeable; faces are more blue and Anderton’s skirt is more teal (hence similar to DVD) than blue.

“Only” ten hours left for the latest regrade lossless encoding!

Sad they try and fake SR on bluray, they always fuck it up

Papai, thanks for the cell image; of course, few cell frames, with no info how they are taken, could not be used as reference; however, I made a brief comparison, and the film, with increased saturation, is much closer to regraded than untouched BD; as I think at least one version should be well made, color wise, and it * could * be the DVD, I’m taking the DVD color grading to be the * right * one for this movie, at least until a proper film scan will surface, that will confirm or deny this.

Even if memory could not be taken as proof, I’ll be happy to hear opinions from someone who actually watched the movie in the theater, to know which version is closer.

So, this’ll be on the Spleen?
Haven’t seen this in cinemas. Just the 2-Disc USA DVD and the USA 2-Disc Blu-ray release.
