Have the interpositives that were created to be telecined to master tape for the Laserdisc/VHS releases beeb destroyed? that’d probably be the highest quality source for official remastering, right?
I doubt that they’d destroy them unless they were seriously low on space. Assuming they were made on low fade stock, they would be a decent source. I read previously that they were on an excessively grainy stock, however, which is not indicative of the films themselves. If I’m not mistaken, Kodak’s mid-80’s motion picture film was known for being way too grainy, not only causing headaches for film makes like James Cameron, but also being what the Star Wars home video IPs were made with. Despite how grainy they are, they’d still be a good source if they were to do a quick and dirty home video transfer, since all they would have to do is some clean up and throw a soundtrack on it.
