Yeah the daleks are like really crappy wooden garbage cans with even less manoeuvrability than R2, altough in the new series they can leviate so stairs no longer pose a problem. I think the background is that something happened on their planet which destroyed their bodies so they have to exist inside these wheeled machines.

There's a whole load of links and pictures and stuff about the current series and the next (10th) Doctor

Levitate to avoid stairs? Haven't you seen AOTC? So can R2D2!
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Sadly I have seen AOTC, but even the cheapo BBC Doctor Who effects are better than that shit. Plus, whereas the Daleks developed the ability to fly over time R2 seems to have lost it...

actually I remember that they were able to leviate in the old series too. Although not until their last appearance in the series. I am glad to hear of their return to Dr. Who.

Yeah, the good thing is they haven't tried to revamp the dalek design for the 21st century or anything. They look exactly the same, really old school and retro, and scary because of it. They look really industrial.

said episode with the return of the Daleks aired here on Saturday evening......

what an excellent nostalgia trip that was!!!!

the voice of the Dalek sounded exactly as i remembered it! it might even have been the same person, i'm not sure!

if any of you get the chance to watch it at some point look out for the excellent cameo near the beginning of the episode!

pure BBC genius!

& no more knocking BBC SFX please!!! we Brits are renowned for our ingenuity with washing up bottles and sticky back plastic!!!

what you have said , is music to my ears. I can't wait for the new who to hit America.

Tell me, in the first episode of the new series, did they bring in the guy that played the 8th doctor in that fox movie so he could regenerate into the 9th doctor?

Unfortunately they didn't, which disapointed me, although the doctor did look in a mirror and comment on his new body. But I hear that when the actor changes in the next series there will be a regeneration scene.
