I bought a home cinema projector this weekend. It's HD 16:9 and of course, the zooming on a letterboxed DVD is done using digital scaling prior to the image being projected. Comparing this to the way my old TV does this (by scaling the image in the tube itself) everything looks much better. I'm assuming that all HDTV kit works the same way, and that's why folks in the US don't seem to mind the zoom mode on their 16:9 displays, simply put the method of scaling totally different and the picture quality is therefore "better".
Editdroid's version looks rather nice on a 2.6 metre screen
